Proposition 19 - Legalize Weed

Personally, I think the single greatest effect will be the savings and improved service of law enforcement as they can concentrate their efforts of serious crimes, and not petty matters of weed possession. There are billions of dollars spent annually enforcing archaic drug laws and incarcerating otherwise law abiding citizens.
And as far as the tariff concept is concerned, most economists would argue against tariffs as they distort competition and generally lead to economic rents. There is potential to enhance overall government revenues, but it has to be balanced against the allocative efficiency gains from proper competition. It would also depend on the elasticity of demand.
And from a libertarian perspective, prohibition amounts to an assault on our collective freedoms based on unsupported allegations of social harm from right wing evangelist organizations and lobbyists for self-interested industries. The prohibition of marijuana was largely effectuated by the tobacco, alcohol, and cotton industry whom all saw it as an alternative to their products (hemp is much stronger than cotton).
Most people don't know that hemp oil is an amazing industrial product and produces strong light weight materials. If we open the production, we can obtain economic gains in a nascent industry by commercializing the processing of cannabis derivatives for industrial uses including pharmaceuticals, textiles, and plastics among others.
Prohibition is largely and idealogical debate that with prohibitionists closing their eyes to the enormous world of benefits that can be obtained with a more liberalized and pragmatic approach.

I say go for it, there is no better time than now so why not vote yes. I believe it will work out.

I don't care what the age requirement is ha 21 works for me.

i agree entirely with you, tariffs do distort competition but from the persepctive of policymakers who are primarily against the legalization, they will try to issue some sort of tariff to feel like they're doing something to restrict it. My opinion is I rather have a little more expensive legal weed that will help stimulate the economy than cheaper weed thats illegal and I get super busted for. If prop 19 doesnt pass, the legalization of marijuana is still a pretty talked about topic and just like prohibition of alcohol, marijuana will be legalized sooner or later. The amount of money the government does spend on crime is huge, and if marijuana was legalized than we could cut a ton of costs related to arrests, and other penalties. The money needs to come from somewhere

You could still grow your own and i would rather pay a little extra then worry about getting "possesion of dangerous drugs" arrested and large fines

The fact that Federal Law > State law pwns all of you. So in theory, we're going back to the 1800's belief of Nullification if this prop. passes. It'd still be pretty awesome-o though.

for the indavidual the feds are not a problem, if the local cops are not busting people, what are the chances a fed is going to randomly run in to you. im not sure about the rest of the world but has anyone on ns been arrested/ hasled by feds

I'm usualy the last person youd expect to defend anything tax related but paying a bit more for your weed is a lot fucking better than getting caught and getting a criminal record.
plus marijuana legalization needs a first step, thats why this is bigger than just California. as bad as the restrictions/tax's may seem this could be a big first step for the cause.
