Yours was not truly sarcasm, but an unfortunately dry attempt at humor. They are not one and the same... but no, I did not read it as a joke. My bad.

It actually has french roots. Not too many people know this. Its pronounces like Gay- Pear (Like a homosexual fruit.... oh the irony)

Yes, the first one was not, but the second one was.
To the thread, I cant see how you can call them gap-ers it reminds me of some one who jump a gap or such. Gaypers defiantly can not do much besides get in your way.

Some kid I ski with thought that gapers (definitely pronounced GAY-PER) stood for Gay Person. Like not actually homo, just like wow that kid is gay. a gaper. hahahaha

it comes from the word gape. since they stand around and gawk/gape rather than getting after the shred. so yeah. gay-per.

anyone who said gap-per is mentally challenged...

No no no. There is a difference. The gaps we pose do NOT show skin. Gayperz (that is how I pronounce) support a gap that shows skin. There is a big difference.

Haha makes sense. When I first read it I thought it was gay-per, but a couple years ago 2 people corrected me and said it was gapper. But they were obviously wrong

This has all already been said, but Gay-puhr. If it was gap-puhr it would be be spelled gapper.
