Hey newschoolers,

My 6th grade math teacher's son Michael R. Gebhardt died in an avalanche in Colorado in 2005 and a memorial fund was started in his name. The program BASE, is in the running for $50,000 from PepsiCo to provide avalanche/backcountry safety education, and is currently in 149th place, so please, we need your votes...

BASE - Backcountry Avalanche Safety Education is a project that

targets those who enjoy the outdoors and would provide education and

training for them before venturing into the backcountry. Its aim is to

reach as many people as possible in simple, effective ways. Many who

pursue this are young and do not always have the finances for equipment

or training. This project will provide free avalanche/backcountry

equipment and safety education clinics, as well as free CPR/first aid

classes. In addition, educational material would be distributed

in targeted areas through bookmarks, coasters and placemats at local

eateries and placards on the local area bus routes. Equipment purchased

would be distributed to participants, ski areas and Search and

Rescue for educational and training purposes.

Pepsi needs to have a competition to donate money to avalanche safety education?? what a douche-fuck company. why don't they just pony up and support something that's incredibly important

It's called the pepsi refresh project, several people(hundreds) submitted ideas for anything to promote any sort of education, and its up to a vote, yeah theres other ideas for social reform and support for schools, but I think this one could potentially save lives, so bring your negativity elsewhere, thanks

I don't think it's right to make a game of "which people lives should we save today", if they're willing to donate money why don't they just see that this is an important cause and just do it. there's no negativity here, just a hope that a company like Pepsi can for once see past the competitions and prizes and just donate to a good cause.

As much as you make a valid point, just try to look at the bright side. Yes it definitely is a 'corporate social responsibility' marketing campaign, but they are still are giving tons of money to valid causes. And by having a contest, it truly does allow 'the people' to choose what they consider the most important. I know it takes a little away from the philanthropy of the act, but its better they have a campaign like this and help real causes than just funneling it all into traditional advertising channels.

I don't want to move this thread in the wrong direction, I'm still voting for it and really hope it wins, but this is my problem with it. It doesn't take a genius to figure out donating 50K to avalanche training is better than donating it to saving cats. Although funnily enough the "save cats from euthanasia" is higher then the "aid children and youth battling childhood cancer". But this IS just a traditional advertising campaign. If Pepsi actually cared about any of these causes they can tell own there own which ones are the most important and just donate to them. They don't need a vote. I bet they make 10x the money doing this than they are giving out. Plus 50K for Pepsi is pennies and it's slightly insulting actually. It's like a millionaire donating 50 cents to cancer research when his middle-class neighbour is donating 150 bucks. You'd feel cheated and insulted by them.

buuut, I really do hope it wins, am voting, and hope everyone else also votes for it.

and here: for everyone too lazy to sign up to vote, you can just vote from your phone.
