Professional soccer players should be ashamed of themselves

To each his own.

And the only reason there aren't youtube clips of soccer hits is because it isn't the NATURE of the sport. You aren't supposed to knock a guy out, you are supposed to get around him.

i guess they might get paid more in tournaments, but u.s teams already get paid a shit load more anyway and they dont have to win to receive millions of dollars. here is a list of the largest sports contracts. its pretty interesting. there are a lot of baseball player, basketball players, football players, auto racers, and one nhl player (ovechkin) who have contracts for over 100 mil, but no soccer players.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_sports_contracts

o yes, even though i do not plan on starting a family any time soon. i would feel a failure of a father if my kids played soccer....

people that take dives just like floppers in basketball like Anderson Varejao and other garbage make games like soccer and basketball get super SUPER bad reputations... there are tons of players that dont flop, that are badasses and incredible players. but to be honest, and this is coming from a guy that never really played soccer but i do enjoy watching it from time to time when i can, soccer is called a physical sport by those that play it but goddamn... some BASEBALL games is more physical than some soccer matches (they are called matches right?). and then you got idiot coaches falling on their ass when a player barely touches them its so fucking gay. yes, football has some bullshit linemen that try to get holding calls, basketball has its floppers, im sure Rugby and the AFL (no, not arena football morons) also have their dive/flopper/douchebag players in it but hockey, they just let those fuckers go at it with the one exception of hooking and really cross checking (i dont really understand cross checking... but w/e).... its fucking stupid that players do shit like this to get a foul call or some garbage.

it also clearly represents a minority. Think about how many games are played weekly. Hell, any given weekend between august and may, there are at least 8-10 games played within the top flight of english football alone. 10 more in italy, france, spain, germany, poland, belgium etc etc etc. Only top leagues too. Now multiply that by hundreds of lower leagues, often with more games going on in each league.

what you end up with is more games of soccer being played in 1 weekend in europe alone than almost any other sport in it's entire season.

Look up videos of real play. You want an entertaining watch, search for videos of arsenal's "invincibles" and you will see some of the best team play ever.

So yes, there are some divers, but they don't last long. And in a sport of this magnitude, you'll see it a lot more because there are so many more players.

And say what you want about soccer being gay, but i personally laughed my ass off when i'd be getting my goalkeeping equipment together and some american football players would laugh and call me gay, then throw on some tight pants, get sweaty, and pile on top of each other.

Also a stupid argument. People don't like things because they're easy, they like them because they are fun. That's like saying everyone likes fucking fat girls because it's easy (not necessarily true), which is not true. Soccer is the worlds greatest game probably because it really is the worlds greatest game, end of.
And fuj, those ''Invincibles'' were straight nasty. As someone who considers the league title the greatest honor in a club football season I dream of one day seeing Chelsea repeat that feat. I was always very proud of our home record, one reason why our game against you're lot two years ago where Essien scored that laser is probably one of my favorites ever.

agreed on the first part. it's not like poor areas go out to play soccer simply because they have to. They clearly enjoy it. Sure the simplicity of it adds to it's popularity, but thats one of the beautiful parts of the game. You get something to use as a goal, and some sort of ball, and you're playing the exact same game that the pros are. There are no changes whatsoever.

And agreed again...i was rewatching highlights from the invincibles season and goddamn. Everything just came together flawlessly for that season.Of course It had to be a bullshit penalty against the fucking mancs to end it. Well, hopefully Arsene can bring us back to that. Well, maybe not back to it, but at least winning the league.......or anything at all

again, when the fuck did i say soccer was an easy sport? you guys really need to learn to read. im saying that its popular because you can play the sport without lots of money. its hard to find a rim or football anywhere. this accessibility is what leads to soccer being the worlds most popular sport. and because it was so accessible, the sport now builds on that and people find interests in it. if you only have one option as a child of course youre gonna enjoy it. all im saying is that if every european or brazilian kid was given the proper equipment to play football or basketball or soccer in an isolated environment without outside influences, soccer would be much less popular

Shut the fuck up and stop trying to play semantics with me. It is beyond clear that the word easy in this case was used synonymously with accessible, cheap, or whatever else you're basing you're ''argument'' on. You're an idiot.

well the first guy that argued tried arguing that soccer takes skill to play, so im just making myself clear

and are you saying that if every kid in the world had the option to do whatever sport they wanted soccer would still be this popular?

ok, ill say what he is trying to say since the two of you fucking hate each other so much that you arent listening to each other.

he is saying, soccer... much like basketball in the states in areas like new york, cleveland, and LA, is incredibly cheap and easy to get the supplies to play. and really, for either one all you need is a ball, some shoes to walk in to get to where you play, some people and you can just go at it. cause in the states at least basketball hoops are pretty easy to find and use.

dude. i think all he is saying is the amount of money you have has a great deal to do with what you might or might not participate in. and it goes without saying kicking around a soccer ball on a dirt feild is a bit cheaper than say something like hockey, skiing, even baseball.

so youre saying if every child in the world had the option to play whateeeeeeever sport they wanted soccer would still be as popular as it is?

I concede that it's popularity would take a slight hit, sure. Regardless, what you're suggesting isn't representative of reality so it doesn't matter either way.
''all i said was that the only reason why its the worlds biggest sport is that poor people can play it''
This is what I really had a problem with and that I can safely say is wrong.

i agree soccer is popular and even if everyone was uber rich and there were no poor people in the world it would still be close to the top of the foodchain, but im sorry... its the most popular in europe... and south america, africa, and the middle east... its lost a lot, A LOT, of push in asia cause of baseball, and never really got a start here in the states at least.... it mainly comes from the fact, as jim rome once said that yes we understand its popular but the general public when they see really even one of those "dives" as you soccer players call it it makes them all look like fucking pussies.

ok to play soccer you need what? a ball.

its pretty basic. same with basket ball, (here in the states you can find a basket ball hoop in countless places). making BOTH sports very accessible.

people might not have a bunch of disposable income to spend on hobbies or athletics. therefore making both of these pretty damn popular. is it the only reason they are popular. no, but ide say it has to play a factor in the popularity.

Being the worlds most popular sport doesnt mean its good...

Personally i find following soccer to be incredibly boring... in every major league there are the top 4 or 5 teams that remain at the top every single year. theres virtually no chance any team other than Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool will win the Premiership ever. Its ridiculous. I just dont see the point in watching a sport where your team has practically no chance ever of winning a title...

Plus the fact that teams can simply buy players whenever they want is ridiculous. Its like not having a salary cap, except theres no free agency or trades, you just throw money at whatever player you want and hes going to be on your team.

Sure some people like soccer, i just find it incredibly fucking boring knowing that its really a 3 team race every year. Whats the point in being fan of any other team???

(this is coming from someone whos lived in England for most of their life too).

Soccer is gaining popularity in Asia as well. I'd be cautious saying it's loosing grounds to baseball if I were you; I don't see much truth in that. Show me some numbers. Besides, what you wrote about soccer earlier clearly shows me that you know nothing about the game.

dude, im half japanese... my uncle, my grandmother, my 5 cousins, my other uncle, my aunt ALL LIVE IN JAPAN YOU DOUCHE!!!! there is more excitment in Japan, China, and fucking Korea for the game of Baseball.... ever seen a baseball game in asia? think of how crazy an Arsenal Chelsea game is... multiply that by like 5 and you have a Japanese baseball game... you sir, are fucking stupid once it comes to asia.

let me ask you this. would taking the family on the summer road trip in the car for 8 hours be so popular if hopping on an airplane were more readily accessible?

IMO it sounds like someone is a little butt hurt by their sport getting trash talked...

that was ridiculous same with bball sometimes but you see that in almost every soccer game its sooo gay and stupid.

I honestly think that this is why a lot of Americans dont like soccer. You mostly see it in the european leagues. Hahaha watch on freekicks, all the Americans cover their balls, and the euros and frenchies cover their faces. lol. look up italian soccer practice. theirs flop practice. lol

I don't see why you'd be so quick to call me a douche or stupid aboutAsia when I never really stated anything about it. Perhaps you're just stupidat life? I really don't care about your family heritage, quite fucking boring.Chelsea and Arsenal matches are generally pretty tame and aren't all thatcrazy, so really what you're saying means absolutely nothing of substance.Perhaps if you had said a Fener/Galatasaray match I would have been a littlecurious. So really you still haven't proven anything to me. Lastly, if in theodd chance that you are right, think of this: perhaps it is because Asiaalready tried the whole soccer thing and they were complete shit at it.Wouldn't you be embarrassed that as the new booming superpowers of the worldyou can barely keep up in a sport with the poor countries of Africa?

Let me ax you this...can you please fuck off from this thread? Please? Hoping on a plane is extremely accessible.

no, asia is still trying the soccer thing... the biggest problem with soccer is the space issue, you need a big fucking open space to play it and in the states no baseball team or football team will split their field with people anymore.....

and you know why africa is good at running sports? its cause they have to run to catch their foods....

go ahead, rape my karma... i dont really care anymore.

is it now...... what would be more costly?.... paying for your family of 4 or 5 to fly a short distance (1-2 hours) or making the car ride in the family minivan?

as for the best sport, in my honest opinion I think lacrosse is the best. Right now its new compared to the other major ones, but its growing like crazy and is going to be huge in the future. It combines the best aspects of soccer hockey and basketball.

soccer:

- the large field

- amount of players

- amount of running and endurance

hockey:

- the physical play

- scoring (with small nets and goalies)

- Line changes (substitutes) so that every player is 100%

basketball:

- several of the defensive/offensive schemes/plays

- 60 second shot clock and 2 point line in the MLL (professional league)

And of course the teamwork and passing of all 3 (as well as many other aspects). It's a relatively young sport and the rules are still changing (2 point and shot clock are newer rules) and making the game even better. I've played almost every sport on some kind of team (including football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball and soccer) so I have a pretty decent background.

my 2 cents on the argument

dude... if you are of native english tongue your spelling and grammar issues arent helping your cause at all.....

Haha ok. I think in the next few generations you'll see soccer catch on hard especially here at home in NA. It's the most played sport in Canada if I'm not mistaken (yes even ahead of hockey).
Here 's the thing, in such technical sports such as hockey and soccer it is not enough to go practice twice a week on Saturday mornings with some rando jackass as the coach. Skill, creativity and awareness come from every day play; on the pond, local outdoor rink, sheep field, street, city court, local park, etc. That's why we Canadians are so good at hockey, we just play all the time and everywhere. I don't mean to brag but I'm pretty nasty at it and I've never strapped a single pad on or even stepped into an organized session in my life. Same goes with Brazillians, Dutch, Africans, etc; for soccer. It comes down to organization vs. culture where the latter usually prevails; coaching can only get you so far. This is why Americans dominate sports like basketball and why the British are becoming increasingly horrible at their own sport of soccer. Ok, done rant.

eh, basketball... honestly, the fucking Spaniards and Germans are taking it over.... like outside of Jason Kidd i see no white guy from the states playing it............ NASH IS CANADIAN!!! and i say white guy cause for some reason, and this is coming from an african friend of mine, that the new age thing in the african american community is to say you are from africa but not african american....

Haha I apologize, I did what I was just hating on Ju for doing. Obviously taking the flight would cost more though it would be easier. Anyways, I don't think it's a relevant example because this debate about soccer is more so about fun where as your example is about ease of life, obviously everyone with half a brain would take the plane.

no, his example was about COST....

and taking the plane is getting so fucking hard with all the security it almost isnt worth it to fly to another state with it to be honest. i had my college keys almost confiscated cause my dorm key LOOKED like it had an edge on it.

Don't hate on my spelling of ONE word after all that you just put out.
And stop trying to pretend that any sport will even remotely come close to be as global as soccer is. I'm going to stop replying to you though if this is all you're going to give me from here on out. If I did that I would have to address every other fallacy about soccer in this thread (there are just too many).

two actually....

"Hoping on a plane is extremely accessible."

how does one HOPE on a plane? i mean i can understand hoping for a good landing or flight.....

ok, im done busting your balls for that one but i wasnt saying basketball is global. ultimately the only sport that is definite AMERICAN that americans still have is football..... basketball has a bunch of foreigners playing in the NBA now, MLB has been taken over by the Japanese, Koreans, and Dominican and Puerto Ricans.....

I worded that wrong. What I'm saying is that this guy was comparing apples and oranges. Obviously if people can afford it they will take the plane. However, what Ju was saying was that if people could afford other sports they would play them more. Which I already admitted would be true (though not nearly to the extent you guys are claiming) but he went so far to say soccer would no longer be the most popular sport in the world (if I'm not mistaken), which is fucking wack. So the comparison of sports to plane travel is really garbage and doesn't really make sense.

Uggg, stop with the spell checking. I'm sure if I put you through Word or something I would see a wall of red.
And once again, none of those sports compare to soccer. Not that it really matters.

would they now? im not so sure...

lets say you planned to take along some golf clubs. (thats a hassel to fly with) hell even flying can be a big hassel if you dont know how to get through security. let alone get 3 kids through security. then once you get to your desination you more than likely have to rent a car or maybe even a bigger vehicle.

one of my favorite things about driving is you get to see so much along the way. but it also takes longer. is one better than the other? depends on what you want to get out of it. and dont you know one costs a hell of a lot more. ide say plenty of times flying is just out of the question due to money.

ive only grammar Nazi'd you twice..... and i use firefox so i see the wall of red... or lack thereof....

and i wasnt trying to compare soccer on a global scale, actually, i dont really know what i was trying to prove..........

So that's what you have to resort to? HAHA! But yeah, I am done here and as far as I'm concerned it was actually over a while ago.

no. the reason we are done here is you admitted that the cost of an activity has an impact on the number of participants.

so it stands to reason that if Soccer had a higher cost there would probably be less people participating in it...

less, yes. But again....look at the number of people who play it. It is immense. Losing some to other sports still wouldn't even bring them close to soccer. But again, this doesn't really matter because it's not a realistic situation. And in any case, soccer is big because of what it is. The sport never adapted to the people who play it, it's them who adapted and changed things so they'd be able to play.

and the interest would never die. Just look at the world cup. Especially the final. I just read that in 1998 when France beat Brazil, more people watched that 1 match than the total number of viewers of an entire NBA season. That info might be a little dated now, but the fact remains that the world cup is the single largest sporting event in the world. Most countries don't care at all about the olympics, but even making it to the world cup finals is epic.

But, you ask most americans, and they wouldn't even know. Why? Because the USA team is going nowhere in that sport, and if they aren't the best, no one cares.
