Problems with ski techs messing your gear up

being a tech at a shop.. if you told us to mount bindings centered on your skis and they end up not being centered .... we talk with you about your options. generally we give them new skis.

Really? Or is that only if you bought the bindings/skis at your shop?

I know a few shop employees and no shop I know of would comp you skis unless the ski actually got fucked up- dimpled base, screwed up the 3rd mount etc.

The Basin in Killy has some great techs and its only $40 to mount.
 
I want to start mounting my own skis. I'm completely terrified every time I bring new skis in to be mounted. I always take a sharpie and mark exactly where to mount

These stories just make my phobia worse. Like, I have a brand new pair of skis that are sittin in the garage that i'm dreading bringing in to get mounted.

I mean, what's the best way to learn to mount? Print out a paper jig and practice on old/trashed skis?

we leave it up to the customer. if they want new skis because we drilled holes into them in a place they didnt want, thats our bad. Now to answer your question about whether or not we only do it for skis and bindings bought at our shop... thats kinda hard to answer. i would say 90% of the skis we mount are from our shop and we have had very few techs screw up on a mount( and very few still work here.. most got the axe for being idiots). so we arent too worried about it.

but for me, pressing hard on the tips and tails for butters are one of my favorite things. having a set of holes that your bindings arent mounted in can create hinge points. I am very familiar with the "3 mount" rule, but water can get into those holes if the tech is sloppy and rot your core. it also depends on where the mounts are. if you get mounted at recommended and then move to center, you will have a set of holes right behind your heal most of the time. that will snap your ski if you tail press or tail butter. specially if you weigh anything more than child weight
 
A ski tech through my friends old skis in the garbage when raking off the binding for his new ones. I don't fuck with ski techs. I mounted me own skis Yeah sketchy as fuck

yeah luckily I got full tilts so I just bought new heels and toes for like 30$
 
Not that bad but my f'ing dad took my skis to sports authority to get them mounted. Long story short the mounted them wrong then charged me to re-mount in the right spot. And put a 3rd set of holes in the skis so they're done.

With my skis, they fucked them up the first time. The second time they mounted them where they were recommended as opposed to center. I didn't want to wait any longer and took em. Anyways now I'm getting an all mountain ski and keeping those skis(park skis). If I get them remounted at center would that be bad? My skis are pretty stiff and I rarely do any kind of presses/butters just cause I suck and it's impossible. Would it be an issue or nahh?

its kinda up in the air at this point. u take an awkward landing and press hard on the tails of your skis it can potentially snap them. for me it just took an awkward landing switch and it snapped right behind my bindings where my old mounts were.

some things to potentially help you

1. make sure your techs plug the holes and use glue with plugs.

2. dont be 185lbs like me

3. dont land switch off a 70ft down rail to flat backseat.

youll probably be good tho
