Pro movies vs. Amateur edits

is it just me, or does anyone else enjoy watching amateur edits better than the video blog stuff from the various events (JOSS, Orage Masters etc). It just seems more real and fun to watch.

i think the reason is we've seen JOVB stuff and poor boyz edits and stuff 1000 times and they dont really have much creativity. amateurs are kinda relying on editing to stand out from the hundreds of other amateur videos, so its kind of like a nice, refreshing thing to see a really well edited video with sick skiing. plus pros have to take their sessions fairly seriously becuase their paycheck depends on GTSing, while ams are just out having fun with friends.

i like amatuer movies better, they just have a better vibe. They are just really fun to watch, while the pro movies are more serious, its hard to explain, but seeing ams and people you know and ski with slay the shit out of the places you ski, just makes it that much better

am movies are easier to relate to. it's the same features we see everyday, they film at hills, hit the same jumps we would, do the same tricks

i think its also harder to relate to pros because the filming that goes on to make their movies is so "finished," whereas ams dont have these hard core cameras. it just gives it a more familiar feel.

word. the Spotlight Project was just as enjoyable to watch as the PBP or L1P movies for me (and 20 times cheaper).

yea am vids all the way. its dope seeing crews of kids from ns make such sick edits and you can totally relate to them. Not traveling to europe to ski the sickest pow lines or going out west all the time to slay parks. Individuals in their areas slaying what they have to slay in each and every way. better vibe. more exciting.

I love seeing edits at full speed rather super slow mo like PBP and MSP. It just gets boring as balls seeing the same stuff.

i like the am vids better because a lot of times you know people in them..atleast from the recent ones i have anyways..

am's keep it real...dont get me wrong..pros do too but its cool to see ams progressing from season to season and video to video..and you know ams are skiing for the fun factor (ie> not getting paid and hooked up by everything a lot of the times)

As a rider that isn't currently shooting with a big production company it is really cool to see that the skiers of ns enjoy watching "am" edits! For those of us trying to break the scene, it is key to have promos/edits/slideshows etc to showcase our talent. As long as you keep watching and rating our vids, we'll keep spending time to put out entertaining segments on the internet. Personally, I love watching what others have put together without the budget to travel to other resorts, go heli skiing, or even sled skiing.

While I'm here I may as well plug my first edit with my bro Blair Richmond. We are based out of Whistler, BC and we have a lot more footage to show the world. Check out "Dark Horse" in the top rated section of videos on this site (or search Austin Ross on youtube.com).

Keep an eye out for our next project soon! Thanks.

I think relating to the footage is probably the biggest thing.. even when comparing pro movies to other pro movies. I don't find AK lines to be that fun to watch cause I don't even know what it would be like.. but spring park skiing reminds me of how much fun I have in the spring.

holy shit man that was so sick

is there a quicktime version somewhere because youtube doesn't really do it justice.

the past few top rated edits that have come out (closing day park city coming to mind strongest) just show how awesome spring skiing is and how much energy people bring to it. in one day a crew of guys managed to throw down some of the sickest skiing i've seen on this site.

It's cool to see really good riders hitting everyday features. Most skiers don't have access to the 120 foot jumps and four story quarter pipes in the pro movies, but they do have access to tons the of park features we see in am edits. I think that subconsciously we think, "Gus Kenworthy can kangaroo flip that little jump, so if I work my ass off next season I probably can too."

I'd say amateur edits for sure. They are much more entertaining and fun. I do enjoy watching Level 1, poorboyz, rage, etc. movies but parts of those are boring. For example the backcountry parts I do not enjoy as much because i cannot relate to them. Don't get me wrong, i totally respect it, but it just isn't as entertaining as street rails or park shots. I love the 4bi9 edits and NIG, ski block etc. so much becuase they are much more fun to watch.

My favorite movies of all time are the robot food ones (Afterbang, Lame, Afterlame) and the neoprotos (especially some kinda life). Those are all snowboarding videos, but if you like snowboard videos, check those ones out for sure.

Slow motion heli shots edited to annoying techno music get boring pretty fast, but so do shaky followcams of kids 450ing out of park boxes to Dipset....

I like watching snowboard movies though. And I'm stoked on what Tanner's doing.

i hate the slowmo shit.. like a kid in a candy store, i just wanna see the bangers and sick tricks right away instead of having to wait 5 minutes to see 5 tricks

I like the afterbang or ride away from the skier in the edit, good job ARoss

Am edits for sure and I like something that flows well that I can relate to. Seeing someone just shred a sick park line gets me so pumped, and when it's not done in slow mo!

music is what really effects how you are going to display your footage, and as an oppisite, the footage you have i think needs to somewhat match up with your music choice. slow-mo isnt that bad when you dont see it often, its often a great way to display perfection at a specific talent. i will be dropping an edit soon so keep em peeled!

What do you think about my edit(haven't really got a whole lot of criticism yet...)? Tried to make a more movie style edit and maybe got a little carried away on the slow-mo stuff...

Something I've noticed on the AM edits is the lack of color correction. It can really change the style of the clip from very cheap looking minidv crap to pretty nice film-like stuff.. Also camera movements are important. A shaky picture looks stupid to me. A good fluid head tri-pod is the trick i guess and you can get them for a little money these days....

i like amateur edits way more. i think that is because i know alot of the guys. i really dont enjoy watching big name riders just kill it. i like to watch 4bi9's edits the most

I enjoy watching edits like this, but i like pro edits like joss edits, and simon dumont keystone type of edits better, because even though we watch them a lot they don't get old if you really like them.

one thing that i like in the am edits is the awesome tech rails in the parks. it would be awesome if in pro movies there were more shots of pros doin steezy awesome tricks on just normal park rails like the ams do

shit dude, that edit was sickkkkk. i was waiting for some banger jumps at the end, and that double you were throwin was awesome. keep up the work man.

My favorite is intermediete stuff...I really enjoy 4bi9 stuff which isn't super comercialized but its not ameture either

While I enjoy amateur stuff, I definitely prefer pro movies. Heli shots and techno music never seem to get old....

Of course, in order for either to be good, it must have creative riding/angles.

A creative amateur video tops a typical pro movie in my book. Basically whichever is more creative and has better filming. I can't stand bland filming.
