Private or Public School?

Backstory: My Dad And Mom have asked me to make a decision regarding which high school I'll be going to. My older brother went to a catholic school, but my sister went to public. I'm having a tough decision choosing and want some help. I'll tell you what I think and then let you guys tell me what you think would be best or share your feelings about either schooling.

--Private: So basically I've already though a bit about this, I know that private school will get me a better education, I'll have more choices for what classes I'm taking, and it'll probably open some new doors in my life. It seems like a no-brainer, but I've also thought of my friends and my living/commuting situation. Going to private school would mean driving 30min. + every morning and every afternoon to get to school. Alternatively I could go to a boarding school in CT which would be around an hour away from my house. Then I'm worried about when I would see my hometown friends, if we would still be friends at all, and what skiing would be like. I don't think I'd like showing up to my mountain after not seeing all my friends for a year and pretending everything is normal. There's only one other mountain in CT which isn't shitty, and if I went to boarding school I wouldn't even be able to ski regularly.

--Public: My dad hates me for thinking about going to public school, he wants me to be my older brother. Hardworking, smart, and somebody who finds interest in my dad's job. The thing is, my brother lost all his friends in HS and it didn't seem like he ever made new friends, he was pretty lonely in HS. If I went to public school in my town I wouldn't lose any friends, and skiing would be a breeze, I feel like my HS years would be more normal. But the education I got wouldn't be as good, less choices and less preparation for college which is obviously the final destination.

I guess that's it, I just need some advice or to hear your experiences.

your parents can't force you to go to what school, remember that. At the interview for the private school just tell them "look, my dad's forcing me here, please don't accept me."

That being said, private schools are a great investment, I go to one coming from a public school, best thing I ever did. But mine is only like 20 mins from my house and I still see all my old friends on friday nights/skiing and yeah. Make the decision, it's yours and yours only

Public. Glad i decided to go to public school when i had the choice, as one of my friends who went to that private school hated it.

i go to private school and its alright but mine is tiny, 100 kids in the highschool, so i would much rather go to public school.

but really man its your decision, i would stay with my friends. where i live it doesnt make much difference to colleges if you go to public or private school but i dont know how it is up there. plus private school could be a lot more strict.

if i were you i would stay with my friends and go to public school.

I go to a private school, so many opportunities. I'd say go to a private school. You'll get great education and it will open many doors. Am I happy that I wake up at 6:30 to take the bus to school every morning, and get home at quarter to 7? No. I absolutely hate it. But the enrichment and wide variety of courses, the campus, and the co-curricular make it all worth it for me. Does it mean I am a snobby rich kid who lives in a suburban area? No... only half true. My parents worked hard for their positions and I am grateful that they chose to put me in Private school.

You've got other 4000 posts and you're not even in high school yet? Impressive.

I'd say go to public school. Maybe it's because my public school is massive, but I had a huge number of classes to choose from and I had no trouble getting into the classes I wanted. As long as you take challenging classes at your public school (Honors and AP) you will be just as prepared for college as any private school kid.

I got to private school too. We have like 100 people in each grade so its pretty small. Definitly more opportunities than public school

Trust me man private prep schools are the way to go, especially if you can be a day student. I fucking hated my public school because the kids all sucked and the teachers didn't care. As far as an education and quality of high school life go, go to prep school for sure, unless you are absolutely in love with the public school you could be going to.

But I guess it depends on how good your public school is. Mine has 98% graduation rate while the local private schools have 99% graduation rates. The difference is insignificant. However, other nearby public high schools have graduation rates in the 30s and 40s, and I'm sure I would have gone to private school if I lived in their district.

I feel like if you wanna do less work for the same GPA go to public. If you wanna be truly prepared for college but possible have a lower GPA go to private. You really are 13. I always just thought it was a joke. either way i recommend you drink 2 40s every day or get into smoking crack.

What you get out of your education is entirely up to you, the institution where you study at is really irrelevant. If you want to learn shit in high school and take the maximum AP classes all 4 years you will get just as good as a education as if you did the same in a private school. The only difference is that you save your parents prob around 60k. That being said I am sure a priviate school will be a better learning environment than a public school, but if you are up to it you can make either work.

My brother went to Xavier, I couldn't do it though, lack of girls would run me into the ground.

There's other private schools though, my dad mentioned Hopkins, Choke, and some school in New Haven.

I don't really see how a private school could give you much of a better education. I would think that the main reason people would go is to be with a higher class of people.

i go to Iona prep down in new york but making the decision you have to was pretty tuff for me, i say go private because at first it seems like the worst thing to have to go through make new friends and all that stuff. But it all falls together and you won't regret it and I still hang out with all my old friends from puplic school you just have to stay in touch with facebook and texting

try public school freshman year, if you can't take it then go to private school. don't listen to people who say you're a bitch if you go to private school. in some cases, yes it's true, but not all of the time. private schools give a far better education, and much more scholarship and merit opportunities which are much better in the long run. but in digression, "growing up a sheltered prick" is based more upon what happens prior to high school. there's nothing wrong with being a good kid.

If your dad is so against public school you canc learly afford that no problem. Go to fucking private school 30 minute commute isnt bad at all i did it all last year. Its actually pretty relaxing. Youll get a way better education and into a better colllege, mak enew freinds, and itll open way more doors in your life. Unless your going to that good of a public school private is the way to go

I went to a private school and it really isn't bad. I would go to private. You have a lot of opportunity and a chance to meet all new people you wouldn't have met otherwise. You would also still be living in your hometown and be able to ski and hang out with your old friends.

go to public school. trust me, it will be a breeze and if you study hard you will get into a good university.

the friend issue is bullshit imo. i go to a boarding school, and you meet so many new kids that it's not an issue whatsoever. i've made some good friends here, and still keep in touch with my old friends. if you will def get a better education at the private school you're looking at, then its a no brainer. what boarding school are you looking at?

I'd honestly say public, but where I live the public schools are tenfold better than any of the private schools in the area. I can't imagine going to a fucking small school and paying out the ass for it, but that's a very common phenomenon in the northeast and even in LA (due to shitty public schools) and the Bay Area. If you have solid public schools, go to those because they will have far more opportunities than a private school- better sports, wider variety of classes, more people to meet, more co-cirricular, and nicer facilities (typically).

since you have the opportunity, i would go private. growing up, i never really had a choice, started private and stayed that way. just dont let the trivial little rules get in your way. best just to accept that there will be bull shit rules then to spend four trying to fight the system.

quite the opposite....yea you can study your ass off and get into a goo dschool outa public school but private school is way easier to get into a better college. You have way more opportunities at private school then public school. If sports isn't your focus by now, they chances are you probably aren't playing in college anyways

AHAHAHAHA CHARLIE AND TIM FOUGHT... that was classic. shit between mab nd mcboyyzz got REAL.. lolz

And you sound like the noise which was made when I adjudicated to remove a Whale's balanus from the underbelly of my sneaker.

well yeah. i was just tryna keep charlie pissed so the fight would continue. pissed i left tough

you wont be able to impress the private school girls with your nice car and clothes. But you will be able to impress all the public school girls with your money...

But really, as long as you graduate high school its all gravy. just go and play a sport at a good CC for 2 years, ball out academically, save a ton of money, then transfer to a super good university.

If i could do it over again, i would have taken it sooo much less seriously, and really worked the system. and this is coming from a kid who realized that he could play hookie starting in 3rd grade.

Go to the school with the best athletic program. good athletic programs make everything better.

I would go public, you keep your friends, skiing easier, and it not like you not going to be able to get into a decant college

I go to a private catholic school and I love it. The people seem so much more chill than the people I know from public schools. There is WAY less drama at my school than some of the shit that goes on at my towns public schools.

private schools definitely do not always offer a better education. Youre paying for your grades so they dont really ever fail you. If you wanna sleep and joke through classes and still get As then private school is awesome. Theyre not so easy on you in public school. I know a lot of private school kids that are having a horrible time in college cuz they learned jack sh*t in their private high school

public school. private schools seem really uptight. public schools are more down to earth. they're easier too. and either way, if you plan on going to college, you'll get in regardless of the high school. when it comes down to it, it's based on ACT/SAT scores, grades/GPA and extra curricular activities.

if you're debating a private school because of skiing, you're retarded. I would give it a year and if you really hate it go back to public school.

Like I said, it depends on the area he is in. Where I'm at, public schools are better than privates in all areas. By more opportunities, what do you mean? We offer far more AP classes than any privates in a 100 mile radius, have top-of-the-line facilities, have excellent counseling that will track you for college, and have more co-cirricular programs than any other private.

This actually sounds like such a good idea, my public school is pretty decent, but they bring in kids from Hartford and my town has two middle schools so it's grossly over populated, there's something like 2600 kids. The sports teams at the public are mediocre. My sister went to public like I said and she's doing fine in college, my brother went to private and he did alright but like i said he had no life.

private school kids have pompous shit up their ass all the time, if you are smart and get into AP classes you will get a better education at a public school for free
