Price of Progression?

Detective brought up a good point in the Superpark 1 thread. At first I disagreed but now I see his viewpoint. Does anyone else thing that the athletes are pushing it too much to take it to the next level? Progression is good but where does it become ridiculous? There are kids out there trying things way beyond their realm of skill. At COC in summer of '00 there was a hit called 'Coach Killer' everyone was wrecking themselves on it and finally some kid who took it above his level and over-rotated a back and had to be air lifted out. Last I heard at the end of the session was that they had to fly him into Seattle because he was swelled up like a balloon and had was in total paralisis. So my question is where does it stop? Someone is going to become a vegetable whether it be on a rail or off a 100 foot table. Progression is all part of the sport but maybe...just maybe too many people are trying to defy human capabilities. It could be similar to what happened in the late 70's early 80's when everyone started to step beyond their limits and wrecking themselves. Leading to lawsuits and closure of terrain...terrain that should not have been closed but too many people didn't know where to draw the line. Anyone?

personally i think that if they are going to huck themselvs i would like to see it. as long as they make the decioson and other people aare not forcing them to do it its ther own shit.

i wouldnt blame it on progression, to me its irresponsibility. I feel like im a good skier, and would hit most tabels. but there are defenitly some things out of my skill level. i think people need to realize that progressoin has to happen slowly, you cant rush it.

i agree with gordo. its just bad judgement. almost always whenever i hit a jump for the first time i don't do anything. i get the feel for it first. its your own fault if you see a jump and say hey im gonna do a backflip off it even though i've never seen it or hit it before. they aren't thinking about progressing the sport.

meh..

why don't they put a knife on a spork? doesn't that make sense to you?

People are mixing up fear and self-concervation. The ARE thigs that really shouldn't be done...

Anything can be achieved with the proper buildup. This is why the freestyle movement in the '70s created the need for waterramping.

I think what is happening is that skiing had too much money. We've come as much in five years as snowboarders did in 10. Kids want to get on top of it all so badly that they will kill themselves.

I personally think that we can push things to a bigger level, but it's going to take us treating this all as a serious SPORT.

'cause yeah, doesn't matter if it's their own damn fault or not, if people start dying we can say bye-bye to this newschool shit. Don't think that it's for SURE here to stay.

Why can't we all just get along?

Jumps are getting really big, to the point that if u case someof them say good bye to your knees, or neck, or life.

I think that it has been pushing a little hard lately, but with all sports there are inherent risks. Luckily skiing has not been nailed with injuries too badly, but it seems it is getting caught up pretty quickly. I don't see it at all as being irresponsible, I mean if Tanner goes from doing switch 450s onto rails to a C rail, he isn't being irresponsible, shit just happens sometimes. But in the case of McMurray, I think more precautions could have been taken to avoid it. With these occasional wind gusts and short landing, the jump should have been left alone or something, but it wasn't the riders fault at all. But hey, shit happens maybe its just bad luck.

I would have to say progression contributes to the problem, but not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is people go bigger than they know how. To make skiing safe everyone should know thier limit and not try new stuff without knowing how to do it and with practice, for instance tramp practice. Ofcourse it is progression that contributes to people exceedong their skiing level. No matter how cautious a person is, thier will always be accidents, maybe it is stupidity or maybe its a freak accident but thier will always be accidents. I can see what your saying but we cannot blame progression on injuries because their are too many factors that lead to these accidents!

The 'Coach killer' jump wasnt very big, the problem with that jump was that the landing was steep and short. To fast or too slow and you ate it, the terrain has to keep progressing with the athletes for it to be safe.

- The kid who got airlifted away, broke into the camps terrain, he was not a camper. When you get to a certain level you need to make sure you know the jump, or else youre gonna get hurt, just like he did.

Kodak Courage is deadly.

skiing is progressing too fast for it's own good (i have a big explaination written out but than my computer decided to freeze and i'm too lazy to write it again)
