Kerry is considerably taller then Bush therefore he has his mic extended more then Bush. It all depends what channel your watching, but NBC is zoomed in on Kerry more then Bush right now.

'im going to win this election' bush told that kerry fucker

kerry justr said i defended this country in vietnam and i will now. ouch. he said it was a mistake to go to nam. that was no good for hiom

yea i hate how kerry plays the nam card making him self look like a hero. when after the war he goes back did that that shit with protesting the troops in the field and throwing this medals away and all the other shit he did

`

Bush had a slow start there, but recovered once he started doing what Kerry was from the beginning: TAKING NOTES. It helps organization. I thought Bush's answers improved hugely after he started doing that. Nonetheless, he was a bit too repetitive; he kept saying the same things, without any alteration, even after Kerry had rebuked them fairly well. On the other hand, some of what Kerry said was simply declared wrong by Bush, which leaves us wonder who's right. I don't know, personally. Secondly, on the debate about how North Korea was to be dealt with, Bush was quite firm in his assertion that Kerry's plan was simply the wrong way to go. That was the Bush we expect; direct and assertive. For the most part, unfortunately for Bush supporters, he seemed to be a tad on the defensive, and I think the reason for that was that Kerry did a far better job than expected of communicating.

I like how Kerry (on questioning Bush's character) talked about convictions are great as long as they are the correct ones. I thought that was pretty good. all in all I saw a lot of the same statements spewing out of their mouthes.

We pay our debt sometimes.

This was just mentioned on CNN, and I thought i'd add it: Bush did a good job of seeing extremely well informed. He seemed to have a depth of information on everything from Sudan to China to Russia (as did Kerry, BUT), this was something a lot of people weren't expecting; Bush has a bit of a reputation for being out of the loop.

Kerry, similarly unexpectedly, was at least as direct as Bush. He was strong in his support of preemptive strikes (which i'm not so sure about, personally), as well as how the Iraq conflict should have been handled, among other things. So I guess both parties took steps to sweep aside some of the negative qualities associated with their characters.

they were both looking good untill the end where bush started to fall, i thought his closing was lacking momentum and that he was falling while carry delived.

Don't take it for granted

Seems more like a joint news conference than a debate to me. Either they have what they are going to say lined up and don't deviate from that or they are not very adaptive debaters. Seemed like there were lots of times where a simple answer could have stopped the others arguments but they failed to see them.

That being said, Kerry communicated much more efficiently, he said much more during his time because he doesen't stop every sentence. I don't expect this will change the poles much though...

Kerry was in viet war for only 4months when he came back he went to pairs to talk w/ the vietcong (hmmm who we were fightin) and told them how bad america is. Now there is a book i cant remmber the author but he was in the same platoon (i think thats what you call it) in vietnam war well there were about 200+ people in it w/ kerry and 90% of them say he is full of shyt

what i got was that bush gave the same arguments he's been giving the last year and kerry presented a lot more information about himself and did a damn good job of it. what kerry didn't do however, was argue for himself very well when he was accused of flip flopping, which is what the bush camp has been plugging into everyone's minds and continued to do so tonight. he also contradicted himself a few times (as did bush, but that's expected). overall i'd say kerry did a really good job, but not good enough to really sway the polls in his favor too much.

bush mumbled and stammered, and the only thing i think that saved him on the iraq point is that kerry never really enumerated on what his 4 point plan was. the whole nuclear proliferation point, kerry seemed more versed than the president, which would be expected considering that bush was never really in public office durring the cold war. the last point about putin and russia will be completley lost on the american public, the majority of whom has no idea of what is going on in the kremlin (an increasing centralization of power). overall, i have to say that from what i saw tonight, if i was an undecided voter, i would probably be voting kerry. however, im not an undecided voter.

Just ignore Estaked, that was totally off topic and diversionary. This thread is about the debates. Just because you think your candidate lost doesn't mean it's a good idea to change the subject. You look defensive. Take your bullshit elsewhere, these threads get ruined when they stray from the topic.

ABC and CBS polls indicate that Kerry won, but then again, all the reps watch Fox anyways, right? I don't think it was the slam dunk it's being made out to be in the post coverage, though. GW wasn't completely destroyed, though he lost on a fair number of points.

take on bi lateral negotiations independant of china, japan, and korea. bush maintains that we have to include those other countries in the process.

um, i dont think so. he (kerry) talked about how since the elimination of bi lateral talks the n. koreans have created nukes, and bush basically said that it would have happened anyways, and that we cant exclude the neighboring nations in asia, as its more in their intrest than ours.

im sure the clips are probably up on cspan.org

Mattman he clearly stated his position. He also did a good job of responded to Bush statments about him sending a bad message to the troops when he said that not supporting the war does not mean he doens't support the warrior, yet push continued to push the subject.

Hi, My name is Matt and I'm a postaholic

I was talking about mattman's comment that Kerry 'flipflopped' within the debate on his position on Iraq. As for the Bilateral talks, it's worth pointing out that Russia, Japan, South Korea and China (all the parties in Bush's form of talks) have made direct requests to the U.S. to engage in Bilateral talks, which is what Kerry is proposing and Bush is rejecting. So take that for what it's worth. These other countries seem to agree with kerry that it's a good idea.

wow, what a debate. I actually enjoyed. I am a strong Kerry supporter and not a fan of Bush's 'consistency', but it was still an enjoyable debate. Bush is already getting ripped up and criticized for continuing to not bring up valid topics. Throughout the whole debate he just slung catchphrases and slogans, a big NO NO in debates. Kerry swung with issues, Bush struck out with his same old slogans, same old consistency while not backing them up. Ouch for Bush

kerry was saying some contradictory stuff like when he talked about how he would give help to the soldiers in iraq, and then when he said he would be steadfast and resolved to finish the war the right way in iraq, last time i checked the situation for the soldiers wouldnt change at all if we wanted to finish the war the right way, and then when he basically avioded bush bashing him for not voting for the 87 billion dollar bill to give the troops increased supplies, so i really didnt understand that aspect of his debate and the one other thing that i noticed about kerry was the somewhat random shit he would come up with like it was only us, Britain, and Australia in the beggining of the war on iraq, also a few other specifics i cant remember but his debating consisted mostly of saying bush was wrong, and saying that he could make everything right without many examples, like when he dodged the question of when and how to get our troops out of iraq, and when bush laid out his plan

--------------------

HIGH NORTH SESSION 4

^He was a bit vague on when to get the troops out, wasn't he? Something like 'We can start bringing troops out in 6 months, if we adhere to my plan, and if that plan is successful.' That's a lot of if's... but he did lay out his plan, at least. And it's hard to go through complicated things like that in 2 minutes. That was obvious in Bush's responses, too; I think he would have preferred to go on a bit longer in a few cases. He seemed to cut himself off.

As for the 87 billion, that's been discussed. It's an accusation taken out of context. Bottom line there: Kerry supported a similar bill, wherein the funding for the same general measures came from places he apparently didn't care so much about (tax hikes? not sure), but rejected another plan wherein the funding source was unacceptable (veteran's funds, health care for vets). So that one's pretty much a moot point. He just hasn't cleared that up too well since it was first brought up, so people have now got it into they're heads that it's 100% true.

but i still dont see why he avoided the question and didnt respond and say what you just said

--------------------

HIGH NORTH SESSION 4

Two reasons. Firstly, he knows they're going to point out what I just said on the post-debate coverage, so why waste 2 minutes on it. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, when in a debate, the LAST thing you want to do is give up the offensive. If he'd responded like that, it would have put him on the defensive and turned the entire tide of the debate in Bush's favour, which I suppose is what Bush was trying to do by bringing that up (he knows it's been refuted, so I can't see why else he'd do it). It was a very crafty tactic on Bush's part, and well done Kerry to avoid that trap. Captaining the Yale debate team apparently gives you a head start on these things. If he'd said what I just did at that point, it might have lost him the whole night.

pretty much all i have to say has been pointed out somewhere in this thread, however i was annoyed with the format. somewhere in these three debates id like to see candidates actually talk to EACH OTHER. maybe even pose the other a question rather than leave the direction of the discussion up to some guy behind the big desk

H3O made this comment earlier and there seemed to be a lot of support behind it. Bush may be more clear on what he wants to do than Kerry, but I surely wouldn't vote on that alone. You might want to look at just what it is that he plans to do, because conviction doesn't mean shit if you're convinced to do something stupid. I would base my vote more on a candidate's ability to effectively respond to crises, threats, and political impasses.
