Presidential Address on the War

When Bush is saying how much the US and world has led Iraq into freedom, peace, and prosperity, allI want to know is why Iraq? Why didn't the US go to help hundreds of thousands of people being massacred in Rwanda several years ago? Why doesn't the US and the world send aid to the Burmese, who are being slaughtered and tortured in the hundreds each day.

I really, really like the idea of applying a justification to a war ex post facto. It just gives me a tingle when I think of how short the average yankee's attention span must be that it could POSSIBLY work... and yet, it does, and very well.

i believe its like this. liberals are anti-war, since bush is obviously republican and waged war on iraq, the democrats are a bit upset about this. so they decide the use the media as a nice output to hinder bushs plan. so they put everything bad about iraq in the news and in magazines. i hav'nt seen an article about the hospitals and schools that the gov't funded and built or that the citizens were actually glad they were able to vote for once. they would extend their fingers that they used for the vote (its a stamp like thing ink would be on their finger) as soldiers passed by. never seen a positive article anywhere, besides in conservative press and talk radio. i guess thats what happens when you didnt want to see your opponent win.

you've never seen an article that supports the war except in conservative media? That leaves liberal media, which doesn't support the war. You are very observant (sarcasm). Either that or I am missing something. You also missed the point. I am not against the US helping Iraq build hospitals and schools, but why Iraq, why not the other countries that are even more in need, but would require a lot less money. You'd think those countries would be better for the US to "help". US wanted oil and a military base in the heart of the middle east that they could use as a front for further attacks into the "part of the world, that if controlled, will bring the controlling state/person, great amounts of power and wealth".

Really? Because for days after that whole cheesy bit of publicity whereby congress dipped their fingers in ink to "show solidarity" with Iraqis (what a joke, maybe try living in a pile of rubble for a while and then claim to be showing solidarity you rich white dorks), it was all over cable news networks. I think your problem, basically, is that bad news sells better. The political agenda doesn't matter, what matters is that there are explosions and death, and for some reason that appeals to people.

 
A lot of you people don’t realize that it’s all about best interest. That the whole reason why the Democrats and Republicans are so polarized on this issue is because differences in interest. The Republicans believe that we can gain something by being in Iraq. The Democrats believe that little can be gained by being in Iraq.

Why do you think the French and German governments where so opposed to the US being there in the first place? Because they had economic interest there.

Why do you think we went into Iraq in the first place? There is a list of reasons. An outcome in the US’s favor would greatly benefit them. In all honesty, the only reason I think this country even gives the region a second thought is because it its strategic value.

One example, Money.

This kind of operation (Iraq) is an expensive undertaking, and politicians are not likely to throw around money unless they can get some in return. Politicians are not ones to throw money away. That excludes no one.

The thing is the dominant liberals in this county want the US to be isolationist. That’s why all of this “cut and run� nonsense has been thrown around by elites like Dean and Kennedy. This is because they believe it will cut the counties losses in $$$ by staying out of other peoples business.

The conservative general philosophy on this issue is nothing ventured nothing gained. People like Bush believe that we can get some $$$ back for getting into Iraq, and as a great bonus, liberated a people from a bad government and spread democracy for future economic trade.

There are certainly more factors, but this is one of the dominants. That’s as simple as I can put a very complex situation.

that is exactly how it works. It is frustrating though that the government throws up a smokescreen and confuses and lies to the public in order to achieve their goals. An honest government would be nice.

You know, there is some good info in here, but I still think the best phrase about war has been from System of A Down, of all places. There is a great divide on though in the US over Iraq, some people believe its justified other do not. However, The line SOAD has, "why don't presidents fight the war?". Back in early times, the title Commander in Cheif was not only a "hands-off" position. If Bush believe's so strongly in this war, why isn't he more involved personally.

The propaganda that has been thrown by both sides is so blinding that I no longer really pay any attention to reports on the news, its all crap anyways. What I want to see/hear is action, not politicains bickering, not political propaganda, not religious rhetoric, etc. I want to see people who "believe" in this action being involved and not just sending more troops and dog-earing more and more money. Hell, we STILL have no exit strategy.

If this sounds like a Democrat ramble, well, I basically am a democrat, however, I will be the first to admit, had McCain run for president (Republican) I would have voted for him. I just think it'll be interesting if at the end of Bush's term, we are still in Iraq I would be willing to bet McCain will get teh nod from the Republican party to run for President.

A good moderate republican is basically the same as a good moderate democrat. They have somewhat different beliefs, but they accept everything. McCain for example. The problem is the more extreme liberl and conservative candidates. The more moderates would make everybody happier.

I used to think the same about McCain myself. But the more I hear from him now, the more I see him drifting to the far left on some issues. Guantanamo for one example. I’m hoping both parties can muster someone less bi-polar for 2008.

there would be protestors because the government would be doing what the majority does not want. What is a democracy? Is it a government that lies to its people so that it can go against the majority in order to make more personal wealth for it's members? I find it pretty ironic that in the same breath, a republican can state that it is good we are bringing democracy to the middle east and also state that it is good for the government to lie to its people so that it can go against the majority.

Remember to keep in mind that money isn’t the only reason for obtaining oil. It’s the lifeblood of the world’s economy. It keeps factories producing, car running, hoses heated, and streets lit to name a few.

Also keep in mind that the majority (I’m going on a limb and assuming you mean general public) doesn’t always know what is best. I know that sounds bad, but lets take an example in WWI. The peak of nationalism inspired many Germans to fight for what was a malicious government cause. Citizens didn’t think what they where doing was bad, and they certainly weren’t bad people. They were misguided because of not possessing proper knowledge of the situation at hand. I know that it’s a rough example with numerous different elements, but the details are beside my point. Prohibition could be another rough example.

The majority can be right, but they can also be wrong. It is a leaders duty to do what is best for the group, America in this case. There is a faith that must be placed in the government, naturally only to a certain extent. If the people feel they are being mislead, they have the ability to make change, and that is what democracy is founded on. If you feel wronged, you have the ability to do something about it.

it is a tyrants duty to do what is in the best interest of the people. It is a democracies duty to do what the majority want. I'm not sure if you know how a democracy works, but it is when a government in voted into power that the majority believe will represent their interests best. When a government lies to its people about what it is doing and why, it is undercutting the basic foundations of democracy, no matter how good the intentions.

I amdit tyranny is in my opinion, the best form of government. But it requires the perfect leader. Do to human nature, I do not believe it is possible to find a leader who would be capable of managing a tyrannical state. If you believe that the present governement is capable of making choices based upon their own opinions and wants, instead of looking at what the people of the country want, then you are greatly naive. This govenrment of the US looks for itself. The president, his cabinet, the congress, the vast majority put themselves before their country and their people.
