Pres. Bush donates $10k relief aid

OK

so...

could we take a second and recognize the fact that, according to Slate Magazine, John Kerry is sitting on as much as $626 million (a conservative assessment) while President Bush has a net worth of about $26 million. These are Federal Election Commission numbers I believe, so there's really no contesting them.

My point here is that not much has been said about Kerry giving money while the president, with no heiress wife, is being bitched out for giving up $10,000.

There is absolutely no way you can try to say that Kerry has less money than Bush, so please, save your time.

I agree, Kerry should be giving up cash in the Schumacher range.

publicenemy - no matter how you cut the cake, it still is not.. and I repeat, is not our responsibility. Sure, it might be heartless for us to stand idly and do nothing, but regardless... it is still not our responsibility.

And if our choice was to do so, then that is our choice to make.

I find it ironic at times how some of the same people who ridicule the United States government and military for being the 'world police' - getting involved in everyone's affairs; at the same time, try to bash and rip the US apart for ''not doing enough'' or ''not giving enough''. Do you not see how utterly hypocritical this is?

''Sure, it might be heartless for us to stand idly and do nothing, but regardless... it is still not our responsibility. ''

J, speaking of hypocrisy, you might be bordering on quite the contradiction here. Isn't it our responsibility as human beings to help one another in times of crisis? I realize that sounds, perhaps, a bit touchy-feely, but to say we're not at ALL obligated to help those people hurt elsewhere int he world simply because they're not our friends or family goes beyond heartless; it's downright inhuman. Anyone worth the air they breathe feels sympathy and a desire to help those people, and if your desire to keep a few hundred bucks you could otherwise spare outweighs that disposition to help your fellow human beings, well, you're not much of a person in my books. So as far as that part of your argument goes, I'm going to have to disagree... we all have a responsibility as human beings to do what we can in situations like these. You don't have to bankrupt yourself, but if you're too stingy to give anything, well, I'm forced to raise an eyebrow in your direction.

So GD, how much cash did you get for Xmas? Heh.

anyone who is argueing that he only makes 400 grand a year do you REALLY think that is his only source of revenue. Bush is the most powerful man on earth, and with power as we all know comes money. Bush has assets coming out of his ass, and 10 000 to him is less than a penny donation from me. He can go fuck himself, fucking greedy bastard.

This is a bit Hypocritical yourself. The united states is often Ridiculed for even tryin to help, or taking the intiative to involve themslves, in any foreighn relations, But then they are ridiculked for not giving enough, help and/or support, as I've said time and time again, in this thread.

three60mute is right, stop trying to bash someone you won't ever meet...

yes i think some of realise how much money 10 000 dollars is in comparison to the average wealth in the world, but i do think that he could donate even more without losing any sleep over it, much less accomodations in his luxury (by world standards, we all here are freakin' rich)...

1. Become a Christian.

3. Only watch Fox News.

4. Live in large hole, cut off from the entire world outside of America.

5. Make sure to label anyone and everyone who sees something wrong in America as a 'stupid hippie liberal' or a 'terrorist'. Better yet, call them all terrorists.

6. Support Bush in every decision he makes. Who cares if his programs designed to help the country not only suck, but fail, he's the President, and as Americans, we HAVE to support him. (see 'no child left behind' for failed, and 'clean air' act for sucky, not to mention his 'abstanence only' sex education programs, and ability to ignore the most basic scientific principles when making decisions, cause hell, the bible HAS to be right).

1. 80% of America considers themselves 'Christian.' While nearly 90% celebrate the birth of Christ. Catholics are evenly split between Dem/Repub. So that eliminates your first idea.

2. Just a stoooopid and immature comment.

3. I watch FOX News, CNN, NBC, ABC. Maybe you should try watching FOX. I also read Move-On, and the DU on a daily basis. I also read some Chomsky, Dowd, Krugman, the NY Times, BBC site, UK Guardian site, and al- Jazeera site every now and then. I have also read Moore and watched his movies. Maybe its you that needs to open their eyes a little more.

4. You live in America too moron. What makes you think you are more 'exposed' to worldly events. Oh, I forgot...you liberals are sooooo open-minded and know about everything that goes one. ::eye-roll::

5. I think there is a lot wrong with America and so do my fellow conservatives. I label terrorists terrorist and hippies as hippies. I have seen you label conservatives before. Don't be hypocritical. I do believe that a lot of the world is bitter towards us though. It is easy to hate a youthful country that has spent its entire life prospering and out pacing the rest of the world in most things.

6. Don't categorize. Just because someone is conservative doesn't mean they support Bush 100% of the way. It just goes to show your lack of knowledge of the conservative world. I would like proof that Bush is the reason for more pollution (blame America of course, many experts have stated no-one is doing the right thing and the kyoto treaty was crap). Teen pregnancy rates have decreased significantly since Bush has been in office. What scientific principles has Bush ignored? I am guessing the you will mention stem-cell research, but the truth is Bush actually has helped stem-cell research more than Clinton ever did. Bush did not cut funding, or make it illegal (like many like to claim) he just opted to not increase the amount of annual funding. Stem-cell research occurs on a dail basis in America...just another lousy lib talking point. What is the big deal if the man has a little faith? John Kerry claimed to be a hard-core Catholic. So was JFK. Give me one example of how Bush has shoved religion down your throat.

How to be a liberal:

Be extremely arrogant and call everyone that is conservative a blind bible-thumping uneducated redneck, but continuously fail to create a valid point and then cry for 6 months after losing the election. It also helps if you continuously deny that the majority of our nation at this moment is Republican.

And to the moron that was bitching about the inaugurationcosts I would like point out that Clinton's '96 inauguration cost 41.6 million.

It should also be noted that the overwhelming majority of funds for every inauguration comes from private donations...not government funding.

$10,000 is a lot of money. Relative to the net worth of Bush, it may lose some of its relative value, but its still a good amount of money. Schumacher makes $250 a YEAR. His donation of $10 million is fantastic, but for those of you arguing in relative terms, do the math. Lets forget about President Bush and John Kerry, where is the UN as a national entity?

dont worry about what i can or cant do, worry about what you cant do to me

Good question Quickflash. I have yet to hear anyone bitch and moan about the UN. An organization that the US supplies with 23% of its annual budget, an amount no one else can compete with.

bush is clearly just trying to force christianity on america, again. Charity is a major part of christianity and by doing this bush is telling me I should convert to christianity.

wait, wait, back up: how does bush force christianity on america? if it means suppressing your freedom of expression and freedom of thought and persecuting you into becoming christian, and penalising you if you don't, then yea, there's a valid argument.

but if it means trying to get some morals that have been supressed for the worst back into society and that happen christian morals (like abstenance before marriage: an abstenance campain has ben going on in angola for example and has greatly reduced STIs and the proliferation of theses infections wouldn't be such a problem in the states too)...

as far as i know, you still aren't forced into becoming a christian, and until then the supposed christiany stuffed down your throat doesn't have to be swallowed.

Shhhhh almostaskier don't tell them that teaching abstinence is actually effective. Their blinding ignorance tells them otherwise despite the fact that the statistics speak for themselves.

Another interesting fact about the youth/sex debate is that there was a study conducted amongst young teens who watched 'sex filled' TV programs and movies against those who didn't. Those who do watch the movies and tv programming were found to be ten times more likely to have sex. And we aren't talking 18 here...we're talking around 12-14.

i didnt read the entire thread, but im just wondering if any of you who are saying oh look at all the people dieing and suffering, look at fucking africa, in the past 2 years almost 2 million people have died in sudan, and with the rate of aids as high as it is and on the rise i think that africa is a more important place for aid than SE asia, this just shows how caught up in the media frenzy everyone is, people are only aware of the next big thing, but not the real problem that the media never bothers to tell us about, africa, if half of you were aware of the horrible suffering that that entire continent is going through then you would be twice as ready to donate to africa, you want to hear about orphans or disease? how about 40% of the adult population having aids in some countries, and hospitals full of dying parents that left their children, if you really knew what the fuck was going on and your idiotic opinions werent fueled by media driven frenzy, you would realize that yes SE asia needs, some help, but africa is the real problem on this earth, and it is a problem that cannot be fixed in the short run

^the reason we are focusing on SE asia as of late is because of the tsunami and the response to it... all we talk about in our at school MUN is darfur, sudan, sudan and aids in africa... i for one think that we are all aware that africa is the main continent in need, but this is just in response to the tsunami...

noone is disputing it because most of the morons on this site have no idea that the problem actually exists, so they are busy worrying about individual people's donations to asia, when if they really cared so much about the suffering of the people of the world in the first place, they would have been complaining about africa before the tsunami even occured, im just proving that people dont know shit, they just continually hype the current media headliner

--------------------

HIGH NORTH SESSION 4

The Hot Sauce Champion of the World

The problem with people taking action agianst the pandemic in Africa is that, while it's clear how we should deal with SE Asia (give people food, shelter, rebuild homes, etc.), It's nearly impossible to figure out what we should do about it... there have been ceaseless efforts to stem the tide of AIDS in Africa, to no avail whatsoever. In the words of Peter Piot, Director of UNAIDS, the pandemic is “The single greatest threat to continual global development, an assertion which is given greater weight when one considers that in many countries, a large percentage of the people (doctors and nurses) treating the disease in third world nations have contracted it themselves, and so medical staff for treatment is constantly at risk and constantly shrinking. One might expect the trend in developing countries towards the virus’ impact being limited to a very small minority of the population, along with advances in medical science, to have slowed the progress of the pandemic at least to some extent, but this is not the case; while 17 million people have died of AIDS since 1980, 5 million contracted the disease in 2001 alone, a rate of 11 infections per minute. While it is likely that a global effort is the best (and possibly the only) way to stop the spread of the virus, that global effort has, thus far, fallen far short of achieving its desired ends. So this is why we're focussing on Asia... it's a problem that can be immediately addressed. You're right, Africa is by far the greater problem, but it's also one with greater obstacles to deal with if we want to make any headway in ameliorating the situation.

What this has turned into is another Bush-Bash-a-thon, and unjustly so. People have nearly forgotten the grief and have searched high and low to find ways to blame Bush and America. Quite frankly, it's disgusting.

On an extremely liberal website that I read many people have stated that Bush should scale down the inauguration and donate all the money to the tsunami victims. There are a few problems with this though. The majority of the inauguration funds are received through private donations. Also there is always a great cause worth donating to and yet there were no out-cries when Clinton's '96 inauguration cost 41.6 million. And I guarantee you these buffoons would not be whining about the inauguration cost if Kerry was in office, in fact it would probably go unnoticed.

These same goons at that site went as far as to claim that Bush was somehow responsible for the tsunami because of his 'poor environmental record.' Somehow they have managed to convince themselves that global warming (which is only Bush's fault and no one else's ::eye roll::) some how pissed off the world which triggered the earthquake which launched the tsunami. I shit you not when I say this either. Even a 'renouned' (haha) environmental scientist stands behind this theory.

So remember that the thousands and thousands who have lost loved ones and who are starving to death right now could care less who donates and how much they donate, as long as they are willing to help fight the devastation by offering financial assistance.

Of all of you that have criticized Bush how many of you have donated any money? How many of your parents have donated money?

No I didn't say teaching abstinence would create less sex on tv. All I was doing was pointing out that an 'over-sexed' culture leads to sexual exposed youth, which can lead to traumatizing events, extremely young pregnancy, and early cases of STD's.

I'm as opposed to the general downward spiral society is facing as the next guy, and Paris-Hilton-Britney-Spears crap is a big part of that, but lying to young people about the facts involved is no way to combat this trend. It's downright dangerous, and about as propagandistic as you can get. Ultimately, I'd prefer younger people weren't putting themselves at risk of unwanted pregnancies and contraction of disease, but indoctrinating them in an effort to dissuade them from doing so removes their right to dictate the paths of their own lives. Only when presented with all the facts, unadulterated (pun very much intended) and unspun, can people make those decisions for themselves. Don't they have that right, however we might disagree with their decisions? As for an oversexed culture, I should point out, for the sake of interest, that a very physically open european culture cannot be described as 'oversexed' in the same way as North America's. How can that sort of image be promoted as an alternative for people who don't find abstinence suitable to their style of life? It's worth thinking about.
