I just gave my Forester struts to my buddy with a 98 leggy GT wagon. It should be about 2.5 inches. We'll see.

unfortunately there isnt much info on the car, the pictures were taken at a Sno* Drift rally in Michigan but from what i've read the car seems to be well done...

I just bought a 2004 AWD ford explorer today. 4.6 V8 and I am putting some new Hercules snow tires on it. Buying snow tires for a truck is kinda tough. I usually buy tires at goodyear but they have not made actual snow tires for trucks for a few years. Most companies make all terrain tires for suvs and trucks that they recommend if someone asks for snow tires. The problem is the all terrain tires are made with really hard rubber and suck a fat one on ice. If you have a car, don't put on a lot of miles in the winter, and switch out your tires in the summer you gotta get the blizzak snow tires. They are really soft which make them money on packed snow and ice, however a softer tire wears out faster. I got two good season out of my last pair and did a good amount of driving on them. I left them on my car this summer because they were worn out and they worked just fine.
 
this is just plain wrong...

i understand you can get through the winter without snow tires, but come on really...i know my summer tires are literally horrible in the winter. and i've passed up stuck suby's, trucks, suv's etc. that had all-season/summer tires still on in my fwd car with snow tires on it. they make a huge difference and i wouldn't drive my car in the snow/cold weather without them.

$500 for sick ass winter tires or you can pay that as your deductible when you wreck in the snow eventually is the way i see it. plus a set of dedicated winter tires will last 3 years no problem. your tires you use in the summer will get less wear as well...it's almost a no brainer to buy winter tires. you end up spending around the same amount of money in the long run replacing tires more often etc.

to do this weekend or next:

new coolant

new oil

new wiper fluid and blades

winter tires/stock wheels go on

also i've got new springs/shocks that'll be coming in december and i'm pissed i won't be able to put them on this bitch till after winter...once they come in i'll prob do it anyways lol

and it's never a bad idea to check all fluid levels, tire wear, brakes, alignment before the start of winter. although most of that shit should be checked more often than most people do haha.
 
ok, what kind of snow tires have you used? and how much tread?

because there is no way any somewhat decent drive on non piece of shit snow tires would not be able to tell a big difference.

yes you dont need them. you can get along fine without them. ive driven 2+ hours on snow to the mountains on racing tires with almost no tread.

but to say snow tires dont do much is just straight up stupid.

yes the driver is most of the problem. but there are situations you cannot control, being able to stop in about half the distance with snow tires compared to all seasons makes a big fucking difference in terms of safety. yeah i made it to the mountain on my race tires, but if i ever needed to stop, it took me a fucking mile. and there are so many situations you are just not in control of.

yes it can be a safety misconseption, but there is no question that it makes driving on snow safer.

this is somewhat true, but a more capable car only makes the driver more capable. any drivers ability is increased when you give the car much better traction in all areas.

im guessing you either drove on shit snow tires, or are just a shit driver who doesnt know a thing about controlling a car, so you couldnt get to the point where you would tell a difference. maybe you're that guy who drives 30 mph on the highway as soon as there is a sign of moisture.

i actually think subarus are shit for the most part, im just applauding this guy for actually doing something cool with his. and its not easy to afford 400$ in tires once every 3+ years with out mommies and daddies help. cost was never your point anyway,(ends up costing the same anyway because your tires last twice as long when you use them half as much. you were trying to say snow tires dont make a difference. which is completely retarded.

IMO by far the cheapest best thing you can do is invest in some high end wiper blades. got some sick single blade Bosch ones for about 30 for the pair. 100% worth it. they slay the slush, snow, water and other crap.
