Prepping the knees for the season

What do you guys do to get your knees in shape for the season???

I'm down with going to the gym or just stretching or doing whatever, im just not trying to mess up my knees this year

How far do you live from school? If it's only like 5 miles then bike to or from school every day. I biked occasionally last year and it helped. This year I've stepped it up to 25 miles a week give or take a few and I've already noticed a huge difference in my stamina and leg muscle. I also live in a place where you can't go 100 feet without there being a hill. Most of them are steep too.

running and biking are both exelent cross training for skiing and also strech out your legs and knees alot, make it a daily ruitine

no offense but 25 miles a week is weak shit( then again i dont know how old you are) but you could start off at like 10-15 miles every other day and than increase slowly to 20-25 or so miles a day and then maybe start biking everyday or 5 days a week(gotta rest) if ur serious about preppin your legs for skiing.

Run, a lot. Try to always end off good workouts with some good conditioning too. Do hills, those really help. Run up, but when you go back down, do it backwards. I know, it sounds kind of crazy, but its ridiculously good for the back of your quads and the back of your knees.

damn you're saying backpedal down hills? shit can get dangerous

yeah swimmings def good im gonna try to do that this year

Both works, forward or backward down hills. Forward helps you gain speed, because it teaches you to either open you stride to run faster, or to get used to running faster and keeping in control. Backwards is mainly muscular.

do mean just like riding anywhere or does it have to be like a challenge like biking down a mountain

im gonna try to start working out my legs a bit before winter. i go to the gym 6 days a week and im hoping to workout my legs at least twice or three times a week, and go on the bike sometimes too as a warmup and stretch

If you have sore knees, bike and swimming would be better than running because they are fairly low impact

i gotta disagree. Soccer has hurt my knees, made many flexion muscles in my hip very weak, and it made my flexibility next to nothing as it made all my leg muscles like my hamstrings tight and shit. Fuck soccer for skiing, ride a bike, roller blade.

just work out too. But i forgot to mention, something i forgot to do but always, always stretch before and after.

something is wrong with my knee. It just started acting up yesterday and i found a spot where if you press in it hurts. its on the front of my knee and it only hurts sometimes....wierd .

well going down a mountain isnt really gonna work your muscles, but climbing hills on your bike will definetly help with your skiing muscles

my knee was pretty jacked up from soccer and skiing and when i was running at the beginning of summer right inside my knee cap would burn and then hurt so bad i couldn't keep running, but i gave it some time and now i only run about a half hour and then supplement the rest of my running with exercise bike or rowing machine

if youre feeling a few sharp pains when you walk, like i have been lately (i got my acl reconstruction about 3-4 months ago) i saw my doctor last week and found out i had tendonitous(i dont know how to spell it), and i have to start stretching my hamstrings

i had that too..except it ended up being the scar tissue breaking up

that was the most painful thing ive ever experienced in my life haha. soo random..soo painful

well yea its definitely not a tear. you would be feeling at least a little bit of pain and you wouldnt be able to put much weight on your injured knee if you did have a torn ligament and it would feel a lot weaker too like it would give out any second. youd know for sure that something is wrong with your knee if you tore anyhting

jump off of/do flips off of roofs and high stuff. its fun and your knees get used to big impacts. even tho its very bad for them...

half-squats for quads. High rep/med weight leg press. Hamstring curls.. Don't forget about your calfs.. and lots of flexibility training.

And also very important.. High Din doesn't = big nuts. Go with recommended.. unless you're coming out. Then go up 1/2 dins until you're secure.

running is actually horrible for muscles and bones because it is such high impact.

strengthen your quands and hammy's, by doing squats and stuff. the main reason people get knee problems is from weak leg muscles.

just what i was going to say. but add hip flexors, glutes, and adductors. Expecially the former and the latter. When doing leg raises, focus on using your lower abdomens, too. strengthen your core as much as your upper legs. those elastic-y bands, indo boards, and bosu balls are my favorite training things. try them out.

and mogul kid, seriously, the bosu ball is the shit. it builds balance, muscle, and technique.

Anyone know any hamstring workouts? My quads are like wayy overpowering my hammies and i'm gettin' knee problems/

OK thats good. thanks for the encouragement! Ill just lay off it. It kinda comes off and on(the pain) so Ill bet its jut tendinitis. Thanks man

hit your squats--4 sets of 15 at low weight(back, quads and ass) and leg curls 4 sets of 15(hamstrings) leg extensions 4 sets of 10 (quads) and do calf raises 3 sets of 25

all of these leg workouts will keep the muscles around your knee much more stable, creating a stronger knee keeping you less prone to injury. plus powder will get easier and you will get more out of your pop too.

yeah leg curls and extensions seem to be good for the knees

and i agree, running kills my knees cause its such high impact

Yeah for a lot of people their Quads are way stronger than their Hammys and that imbalance puts a lot of pressure on the knee. Also it takes half as long for the ACL to tear than it does for the message to go from your knee to your brain and back telling your hamstrings to pull and protect. So I spend a lot of time working on reflexes like jumping off boxes and practicing absorbing and one-legged hops help too. But guys have better reflexes and that’s why strong “inshape” girls still hurt their knees more than guys. Pity
