Practice for backflips

I can do backflips cleanly off the diving board, but my dad (no freeskiing experience) told me I should be doing gainers if I'm going to be doing this on skis. Newschoolers, is he correct?

The feeling of a gainer is a lot closer to a backie on skis, but gainers on diving boards are generally pretty sketch imo. Not necessary. Just expect to be blind longer than you are used to if you do it...

Do it.

I think it's different like you're Always moving forward on skis so it will just come naturally, just try some into some soft snow or onto an Airbag and you should be good to go

gainers have the feeling of being in air, but regular backflips have more of the set. You gotta pop a little harder on snow

When you go to throw it on skis, DO NOT THROW IT LIKE A GAINER. Throw it like a normal backflip, or you'll end up like my friend

So I guess I should just practice a regular backflip

For whatever reason I find doing gainers off of the diving board is less sketch than doing normal backflips. And I think that it'd be good to do, but it wouldn't be necessary.

Not really. You just have to know what you're doing. If it's a stiff shitty board you want to jump forward a lot. If it's a legit board you're still jumping almost straight up.

Idk, I used to do them off the side of the pool, that was sketch. Almost hit my shins once and was like fuck that. But a boad? Nah you're good.

Also play ssx tricky and get it dialed before the snow

That was also too small of a jump... a good 10-15ft kicker is the best not a 6ft shooter.... Its possible to do it on that jump but he would have landed it if it was bigger!

Throw it like a backie on tramp... chest out and back so you have alot of time to spot!

If you have access to a trampoline you should practice by putting your skis on and throwing it in the tramp, for me the biggest difference between back flips on tramps and diving boards was the weight and having me feet seem like they were 164cm. if you do do this on a trampoline protect your edges with some sort of tape that wont leave a sticky surface on your base, I've always used painters tape. I felt like other than an airbag that prepared me for the snow the best. I would advise you also toss a helmet on because if you do under rotate there's a good chance your skis will get you in the back of the head which isn't a big deal if you've got one. Hope this help, best of luck.

Make sure you throw it hard enough as well. Be patient on the lip. I've seen a lot of people almost hit their head or be too impatient and over rotate

you throw it like a layed out gainer everyone here is thinking the type of gainer where your momentum of your legs coming up is causing you to flip, but a gainer thrown properly is the same as a backie on skis, you push out with your hips practice gainers, and lay them out

heres a video of me throwing a backie. How's it looking?https://www.newschoolers.com/watch/780320.0/backie#QifzW1vMJLVS4K78.97

and I apologize for the embed fail

It doesn't matter what you practice. Backflip on skis in one moment, you just need to huck it. But learn gainers so you can get more ladies.

Has nothing to do with throwing it like a gainer and everything to do with not looking back imo. If he had cranked his head back he would have kept rotating.

He kind of just jumped up into being upside down versus throwing it to bring it around.

I have never done a gainer off a diving board and I just learned backflips of a diving board this year and I tried my first backflip on skis last year and had no problem. I think if you can do it on a tramp that's all you need

I just learned how to do backflips on skis this past season so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. I've been able to do backflips on tramps and off of diving boards as well as gainers. Doing one on skis feels similar to doing one on a tramp.
