Powerful stuff

Co-worker just came back from italy and gave us a taste of some italian liquor he was given in a restaurant as a "cold remedy".

The stuff was 180 proof (90% alcohol) and tasted like sambuca, but it STUNG. He sent 3 people to the bathroom because they had to puke.

Has anyone even seen 90% drinks in North America?? I've had some good 'shine before, but I don't think it was that high.

with the bad spelling it's called ' La Goche Imperiale '(Goccia imperiale). In English it means "The Imperial Drop".

You mean Champagne? It might also be worthy to mention that 70% proof Champagne doesn’t exist.

^He's right, there's a huge process in making champange(sp), and the concern is about the bubbles in it, it can't have a high alchol content.

it could have been absynthe, I've hear of a few bootleg absynthe recipies using everclear.

Also, 70% Champagne does not exist, as previously mentioned, however, I have seen some Cognac's that were pretty high proof (for Cognac) - Cognac is made from the same grapes as Champagne.

I doubt it was grappa though too, Grappa is a 2nd (or 3rd - don't remember) pressing of the grapes, and tastes nothing like licorish - its rather repulsive if you ask me.

Ouzo, is also not that high in proof. Yes its anise flavored, which tastes similar to licorish (I have no idea how to spell that). Ouzo, is corporately produced and no way they'll bring the proof up there. However, Anisette is sometimes bootleged, which could be rather highly proofed.

My best guess would be a bootleg Anisette or a bootleg Absynthe.

Absynthe itself was not illegal in the states. The problem was the wormwood. In the states you can buy absynthe at a lot of liquor stores, but there is no wormwood used in the production. There are still some production companies outside of the US that use wormwood in the processing, but not many.
