Powder's response to the Alta is for Racists video

stupid video is stupid.

that being said, the absence of snowboarding at alta is the dumbest thing since pet rocks. "OMG snowboarders cant navigate traverses!!!" i deal with this every pow day up at brighton, which has some fairly intense traverses (claytons, high t on milly, japanland traverse) and just as much slack country thats hikable as alta. on a normal pow day at brighton, you will find an equal amount of snowboarders struggling as skiers to make it to their favorite stashes. and what do you do when one of those slow ass knuckle draggers is walking a traverse in front of you? go around them! an incredible concept for some people to grasp.

considering that this is the only real argument against it (besides the stuck up traditionalist that run the mountain), i wont even waist my time on the other arguments against snowboarding at alta.

Asking wich sport is better is gay. They are different and both is awesome, cant believe alta did this lol...

only pussies go to resorts to shred, real skiers and snowboarders become one, in the real back country.

everyone else is just posing, and Alta along with the rest of Utah can do each other Mormon style.

"Let’s look at this analytically: We have one group of affluent, predominantly middle-aged white males crying about discrimination at the hands of another group of affluent, predominantly middle-aged white males. Why? Because the one group of affluent whites won’t let the other group of affluent whites use their favorite over-priced toys at their private business, preferring that they instead use a different, but similar version of over-priced toy. It’s really hard to be sympathetic to their “plight” when there is real, honest-to-God ethnic cleansing going on in Darfur."

Sums it up pretty nicely. If they don't want snowboarders at their mountain, it's their choice. It's far from any sort of human rights issue.

Levitation project has been dumb since day one.

I've never skied Alta (nor anywhere in Utah), but I respect their decision to stay skier only all this time.

I, like most people who aren't in highschool with teenage angst, see no difference in the mentalities and overall fun-ness of the two sports. With that being said though, when you get into terrain that has a small shelf life in terms of how many people can ski it before it's fucked till the next snowfall - snowboards drop the shelf life of said line drastically.

It goes the same with a smaller percentage of skiers... but there is a way smaller percentage of skiers that sideslip chutes that are just over a ski length wide than snowboarders.

who let those damn boarders out of the park anyways? (the last comment was not to be taken seriously)

Most of my snowboarding friends actually like the idea of Alta being a skier only mountain. That being said, most of my snowboard friends rock split boards and are slowly working on their skiing skills so they can just ski already. The way I've always looked at it is like this: A snowboard is a really fun toy, where as a pair of skis is a really great tool.

this argument does not hold very strong.

the amount of skiers that ski at alta (or any mountain for that matter) that are below sub-par at skiing, greatly out numbers the skiers that are competent in their abilities. that being said, the snowboarders that ultimately would be trying to get down on the gnarlier terrain at alta, would be sending it, just like the competent skiers that find themselves in the same place. Claiming that snowboarders sluff away more snow then skiers is a fairly asinine thing to accuse, especially with all the Scott Schmidt turning yuppies up at alta that put down 79 carves where any ill skier (or snowboarder) would be taking 4 or 5 turns at best.

ahahahah personally i thought that was a funny video. why is powder getting their panties in a bundle over this? it was levitation's choice to make the video and they knew the consequences so get over it.

yeah, i figured that would be the kind of response I would receive, and I understand. As I said, I've never skied anywhere in Utah... I'd imagine it gets very... interesting... seeing how close it is to the city.

My only beef is in tight chutes, where, as I said, snowboarders just can't make tight turns like skiers can... but in a way, that's neither here nor there. it's simply an opinion of a skier who, ultimately, his opinion doesn't matter. that - and i'm not about to get into an argument over the internet about something that has no real right or wrong, but simply opinion.

They should let snowboarders in for a week or something to "test the waters", you know... just see how it goes. Didn't Taos do this before officially opening up for snowboarders?

interesting to say the least.

and i wasnt trying to argue, just playing devils advocate in this situation. I know they have their reason, i just think that they are mostly bullshit reasons.

hahahaha funny story actually. It was my first time at alta probably 3-4 years ago when i was in 7th grade. I'm pretty sure it was right after lunch when we some snowboarder booking it down one of the trails on alta underneath the main chairlift, and whole pack of skiers (around 30 give or take) just bombing down after him and they looked pissed. It was very funny.

It really is in extremely bad taste. As someone mentioned earlier, it makes light of some fairly serious and traumatic issues such as genocide and racial violence and oppression. It's slightly scary that some people think it's funny to draw comparisons between something so serious and something silly. Even though i agree with the basic idea of LP's argument, the means of expressing that argument is completely out of control and in extremely bad taste.

That is pretty much my opinion on the matter, too.

Much love for snowboarders in general, but all too often, many find themselves way beyond their skill level, and consequently they ride their heel edge everywhere, fucking everything up in its path. A lot of skiers get in over their heads, too, but certainly not as much.

I find it pretty sick that Alta is still holding on to its non-snowboarder policy. Like I said, much love for snowboarders, but I enjoy Alta's tenacity and guts.

I agree. Its rediculous they are making it seem like its a discrimination thing. Its not. If alta wants to keep their tradition, let them keep it.

what is this? A thread with an argument that doesn't end with two sides calling each other 12 and threatening each others mothers? Unprecedented.

we will keep it. :)

But i find it hard because my best friend is a snowboarder and we go up everyweekend.

Is there signs up all around alta listing discriminatory or hateful messages against snowboarders? Last time I checked, there wasn't.

well of course it's discrimination, but it's not anything having to do with some sort of human rights issue. It's not race or gender, it's a recreation (in some rare cases, a profession, at best)

It's essentially the same thing as a vendor displaying a sign "no shoes, no shirt, no service". It's their right, as a business, to decide how the services the provide are utilized within the scope of the law.

they did no such thing, the greedy heirs of the resort simply went against their father's dying wishes to increase profits and opened it up

You're right about the greedy heirs....the Blake's are shitheads, but they DID open up to boarders for a week or so the season before it became official. A Transworld film crew was there, for sure.

1. get split board2. put split board into touring mode and get on lift (hopefully they don't notice split board)3. get to top of lift, ski away from view of employees.4.put split board into snowboard mode.5. snowboard at alta. 6. before getting to the bottom return to split board mode and ride lift.7. repeat steps 2-6.

whoa what the fuck do you have against pet rocks? ignatius the igneous rock thinks you're being a real dick right now.

Unfortunately, that won't work...

But, on the other hand... I saw a dude clicked into a monoboard loading a lift at Alta last week. Go figure.

i would say its more like a restaurant having a tie and jacket dress code. the establishment wants to attract a certain type of customer, by holding its customers to a certain standard...and guess what? they arent hurting for customers.

hey snowboarding, if you dont like it, go open up a snowboarding only mountain. you CHOSE to snowboard, live with the consequences; anytime you wanna start skiing, you are more than welcome at alta.

I don't know about you, but there is a higher shredder to gaper ratio at alta than at anywhere else I've ever been.

You know why I don't want snowboarding to be allowed at alta? I like having somewhere to ski regular terrain(not park) that doesn't track out like absolute shit(brighton). That said, I'm buying alta and brighton passes next year.

I'm always for limiting numbers at sick places as long as Im allowed in so I can get more pow for myself!

Don' be in physics, or biomed, or comp neuroscience, or deal w/ a patent office and find out theres no more fucking fruit loops when you come home.

But nothing at Alta should be mentioned in the same breath as the 3rd reich... except make this rockin Catherines area that put a coreshot in my uninsured 1 day demo Troublemakers.... I'm ok calling that Himler

Kevin Dineen is Derek Taylor for those NSers in the dark. Sorry DT. This is Newschoolers.com. Pseudonyms are silly here. :-)
