Pow v Park

Hey guys,

(So i've been a huge newschooler fan just never had an account till now)

Anyway I'm off to Japan for 2 weeks and I've got a 2014 pair of Faction Somas. I love them to bits but... its time to expand my quiver.

Problem... Im beginning to get into the park but I'm off to Japan. I don't know if i should get a pair of pow skis (which will barely be used outside of Japan) or park skis for spring skiing etc. Any opinions on which the somas would combine best with - they held up well in my Whistler season but i borrowed a mates Pow skis for CAT skiing and if it was sticky i got left behind! I also, maybe its me, can't nose butter them for sh*t but tail butters are ridiculously easy to go large on? Could this be due to them being mounted back from centre?

Anyway I'm at such a dead end on which way to expand to... Give us your opinion on how you've gone about it building a quiver!

PS im 6'5 and 100kg so I'm worried id snap armadas :/

skis I like:

The friend - J skis

Magnum Opus - Line (Maybe too fat - i like to be in it)!

Wall - Volkl

Whipit - J skis

Al dente - Armada

youre going to japan to ski japowpow, get at least something 115mm underfoot. Id rather enjoy the fuck out of some of the best snow on earth, then be left behind on some 100mm of less skinny skis

Skiing park on pow skis is a hell of a lot more fun than being stuck on park skis unable to move on mellow japanese slopes waist deep in snow.

True!

so any advice on which pow skis? The friend seems to of cleaned up all the awards this year... Cant find any graphics i like but i guess thats not the most important thing anyway

I feel like the blend are similar to somas.

Somas are all mountain so i kinda want a flat out park or pow ski not another all mountain ski. Although i can't handle skis that can't carve a little!

I fucking love my '13 Opus'. The most fun ski I have ever been on. The pop hard and are jibby as hell. Bentchetlers are pretty rad too.

Also if you head over to 2ndtracks.com they have a pair of 187 carbon pow's from last year for a pretty good price. Never skied them though so I can't say what they are like, just heard good things.

My suggestion would be to get pow skis, as well. I ride my Bent Chetlers as daily driver during the bulk of the season. They are way fun everywhere; pow, groomers, crud, jumps, you name it!

If you are tentative about dropping the cash on pow skis, or don't know if you will enjoy them when you are back, you could just rent/demo some while you are over there in Japan. Then you could get a feel for what you like before diving in. Always a valid option.

I vote blizzards, 4frnts, lines, or armada+ atomic for pow skis. There are plenty of good pow skis from just about every brand, but I see the most consistent success, quality, and performance from these brands. I live on the east coast and definitely havent skied a lot of the pow skis that these companies offer but knowing the specs and tech in the skis is very useful to tell what you are getting into

Bentchetler's bro.. I have those an Soma's in my quiver and ever since I got them I haven't used my Soma's at all except for rails

Pow skis

Jeffery's or Billy Goat

Billy's you'll have some camber to work with.

Jeffery's are flat rocker.

Can do park on pow skis but not pow on park skis. I'd go full out on the pow and not half ass it with half camber / rocker or whatever.

Go full rocker beasts. Benchetlers, Hojis, etc

Bentchetler's. They have awesome graphics, and you can get a pair of last year's with even cooler graphics for cheaper right now. and like said above, you can shred them all season. Such a fun ski

Get a super playful pow ski. You'll be able to use them in japan and foul use them at home too cause they're so playful.

Maybe a Line pow ski, on3p jeff 114, Kitten Factory Layzrblades, 4Frnt Yle, Bent Chets, Revision Subtraction, J SKi friend, and countless others..

Yeah get a playful pow ski, or one that is sort of in between stiffness and being flexible and also in width I have a friend who last year skiied on some skis that were wide enough to ski in the pow but sti giving him the ability to have fun in the park and he's pretty good too, by the spring he was throwing cork 10s on them so I would go for a ski that is I between I could even try and find out what skis he had.

Armada skis are some of the most durable and high quality in the game. Where in Japan are you going? If you're gonna be in Niseko you can rent from Rythm Snowsports and they let you swap any kind of skis depending on what you wanna do e.g. you can ask for pow skis then swap them for park skis later, then all mountain skis, etc.

if you're only going to be using the pow skis on a single trip to japan, I'd maybe see what you could do for rentals on the trip. maybe get something decent you could use there, and get a pair of park skis for the rest of the season. just my thoughts

With your size I wouldn't get the line opuses, you'd overpower them. Bentchetlers or pettitors would be a good bet, slightly stiffer but for you would fall in the 'playful' ski category
