Pow Ski Question.

Hello Ns,

After a huge research, I am in between Armada JJ and Bent Chetlers and i really need your help here.

As you see i am looking for a playfull powder ski, I am 25, 5'9, 190lbs and i mostly want them for Tight Trees and some pow butters! About my ability i am Type 3. Never had a pow ski before (budget reasons) and i ride Armada Halos 176 for pretty much everything.

I can get my hands on the (12/13) 183 Chetlers with ffg16 for $700 and the (11/12) 185 JJ's with STH14 driver for $650.

(European Prices)

What do you Think? If you have any other recommendations please post!

Thanks!

Well,

Armada JJ's are nice, they are good all over the mountain. They are soft, but I didn't find them fun to ski, compare the EP pro and hellbent and some other ski. I love my pair, but you won't want to just ski trees, you might be skiing crud or big open face too, and the JJ's don't really excel in those condition IMO.

Atomic Bentchetler, If I'm not mistaken their are wider (123mm), stiffer ( not sure ) and more playful. I skied them when I was in Utah, but I wasn't the same skier that I am today. If you are looking some nimbus film you'll see Chris ripping on them. From butters to cliff.

IMO between those two, I will go with the Atomic, but that's me.

Here's some more option:

Line Mr Pollard Opus

Salomon Rocker 2

Nordica patron

K2 pettitor

Rossignol S6

Moment Bibby 186

Where are you skiing? What are the conditions like; perfect soft, light pow or heavy crud? Are you skiing any terrain other than tight trees?

I just bought the 2012 Bent Chetler. Picked it over the 2012 K2 Obsethed, JJ, Salomon Rocker 2, and everything else. From what I've read they're really playful, can charge hard, and float like a dream.

I am from Greece, I'd say Light pow. About the terrain.. is a long story! Our ski resorts are not anywhere near compared to yours! We have small mountains, no parks (well, a rail and a kicker is not called a park) so i want something more challenging! I did some sidecountry and trees with my Halo's and i wanted something more! I don't have problem with heavy crud, i am used to it! I just want to get the best of pow days and have some fun!

Thanks for all responces +K!

I haven't ridden the JJs before but I have used the Bent Chetlers so here's my thoughts.

The two times I rode the Chetlers was on endless powder days (Two years ago), they were a friends who had recently gotten new Hellbents and had no need for them.

The first 5 runs on both days were amazing! First off they floated great, although previously the biggest ski I had been on was a Line Bacon so this was on a whole new level of width and it performed just as I had thought. I could slash with ease and make long carves when I wanted to, it also allowed me too go to the ridge of some chutes and get a big mountain spine feel in there. The cliffs were wonderful and the Chets held up solidly on them, and allowed me to land switch. The crud was definitely not the skis strongest point but it did hold up.

Later we hit up two features, slackcountry, and trees. My friend had Dukes(I think?) on his Chets so we took a quick hike to hit up some more fresh pow. Needless to say they wrecked the pow but the only thing is they are a bit heavy for touring. At the end we went into the trees, and the Chets are amazing! They had no problem maneuvering when things got tight and they didn't sink into any holes around the trees.

To finish I have to say that the Chetlers could rip anywhere with pow and I would guess only have problems with flapping and stability on groomers and at extremely high speeds. The only ski I can put it up against is the Line Mr. Pollards Opus (Demoed last winter) but if I had to choose a ski that I would use more in powder I would pick the Chets. However if you are looking for a ski that will be used in more variable conditions, and sometimes used touring I would look no further then the Opus.

Hope this helps!

Spark Notes: Chetlers are a great ski, that handles great, but is a bit heavy. Opus would be better for touring and mixed snow.

both are good. bents make a bigger turn and is a little heavier. u would be happy on both, but if skiing tight trees is your thing, i would take the quickest turning ski i could get.
