I don't want to start an argument here but I haven't read Take Ivy or taken fashion advice from any japanese gentlemen recently. I don't shop at American Eagle or know what style they are currently carrying. I didn't just recently start dressing this way and I only referred to it as Ivy because that is the most universally known way to describe the style.
I do wear what I like. We had a sportcoat and tie dress code in high school and after you get used to dressing decently it is easy and a pleasure to continue. You can't wear a t-shirt or a leather jacket to a horse race or a country club or a restaurant. I also work in a professional setting where professional dress is appreciated.
Loafers are comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Button down collars don't flare out when you are wearing them without a tie. Flat front pants are comfortable and bunch less than pleats. Three button suits look like crap. It's all comfort based and common sense.
It's timeless and it's the only acceptable way to dress.
I don't know anyone who wears a moto jacket.

You don't seem to understand. It doesn't matter what YOU PERSONALLY have done, looked at or talked to. The buyer for Saks in NYC in 2004 decided something was trendy. This was informed by a number of factors, but Japanese influence and Hedi Slimane's era at Dior have been probably the biggest influences in the last 10 years. What happens then? It gets filtered through the media, it gets into magazines, and it slowly seeps into popular culture. Then lower-tier designers take these influences and make products eerily reminiscent (in 2008) of what Hedi did (in 2004). Go on revolveclothing at any given time and you will see essentially knock-offs of what was done on runways 4-5 years ago. This is just how it works. You do not see this effect happening and you believe you are making your own decisions. This is laughable. You are as much a slave of trends and marketing as hipster kids wearing keffiyehs (actually probably more so). There is a reason the Gap sells selvedge denim - it's because Japanese repro hit it big 5 years ago. There is a reason H&M sells slim-fit tuxedos - it's because Lucas Ossjendriver at Lanvin made them popular years ago. There is a reason that Club Monaco sells... well actually about 2/3 of what Club Monaco sells is derivative of minimalistic Thom Browne (aka Brooks Brothers Black Fleece).
Here are a few funny comments:

"Button down collars don't flare out when you are wearing them without a tie." Used to be people wanted this flare-out generally. Why do you think this is good? I personally wear nothing but buttondown collars but it's pretty funny that you think this isn't trendy. You can thank pretty much thank styleforum circa 2007 and its ilk for the fact you can get them anywhere and everywhere today.

This is the result of a change in perspective by a number of european tailors about 10 years ago, and the fact that slim and minimalist is the order of the day (for which you can thank Hedi at Dior and Raf's early tenure at Jil Sander). Pleats still look better on larger people.

Saying any particular style is the "only appropriate way to dress" is unbelievably stupid and reveals your ignorance and myopia. You probably have not read anything about any of this and are pretty much talking out your ass. No style is "timeless". "Timeless" is a marketing buzzword that has effectively sold americana workwear to the masses for the past little while. The modern iteration of these clothes is simply a modernized romanticization of a sepia-toned former era that can be sold to people... with a slimmer cut; thanks again, Hedi. Same way "authenticity" has been used to sell people made-in-usa boots and cone mills selvedge denim, same way "construction and materials" has been elevated to a fetish ("yeah bud this cotton is milled by hand in Zimbabwe"). You may not even be aware of any of these movements (in fact judging from the superficiality of what you've posted I would bet you're not) but they basically determine what you think looks good.

We can hang out 1/3 of the time! I understand your trickle down explanation and applaud your knowledge of the fashion industry. We should start a thread to discuss this. Timeless is a limited concept to me since I haven't interacted with anyone older than my great-grandparents so clothing from before their time is limited in it's influence. I don't believe I need a basis for my opinions because they are opinions.

Dude, I'm normally on your side, and think you're a classy motherfucker, but I don't know how you can deny that dressing "ivy" looks damn good. I understand that people have different opinions, and I understand what you're saying about it just being a trend I guess, but why does that make it a bad thing? Are you really being that much of a clothing hipster to believe it's bad to wear that stuff because it's semi-popular? I really think that the country club style will be around for a long, long time. Probably after most of the stuff you wear isn't in style anymore. No offense to you, of course.

What I am denying is that it is the best way to dress or that it is not a fad. Yeah, go try telling that to Quoddy mocassins who suddenly a couple of years ago went from a quiet company that got a few orders trickling in every week to all of a sudden WAY too many and couldn't come close to filling demand. Tell that to epaulet and context clothing and a dozen other brands and stores that are capitalizing on the ivy bug. To deny that it's trendy is just nonsense.
What I am denying is that it is the best way to dress or that it is not a fad. Yeah, go try telling that to Quoddy mocassins who suddenly a couple of years ago went from a quiet company that got a few orders trickling in every week to all of a sudden WAY too many and couldn't come close to filling demand. I feel obligated to post another recent purchase now but I am running low on things to share.
Don't judge but I signed up for a 6 week pottery wheel class. 6 - 2.5 hour lessons plus 6 - 2 hour open studio sessions plus clay, glazing, and firing all for $150. It was an awesome deal and I am going to make 20,000 coffee mugs and cereal bowls.
I feel obligated to post another recent purchase now but I am running low on things to share.

Oh, I'm not denying that it's trendy. Everyone and their grandmother wears Sperrys and blazers to high school now (which I think is stupid, for what it's worth), but I don't think it's a new trend. You clearly know way more about fashion than I do, so I'm probably wrong, but it just seems like it's been around forever. Maybe it's because I spend my summers at country/yacht clubs, and that's how everyone has always dressed, at least as long as I have been going there. And for the record, I never said it was the best, or only way to dress. I just happen to dress like that and think it looks good on me lol. I'm not sure what I'm arguing here, so I'm just gonna leave this thread until I buy something new.

The loafers I posted on the last page are actually AE. Alden is more pretentious and I feel more successful wearing them but the AE's were on sale. *shame*

I've never in-lined before so I got these on amazon for £17 incl postage, so even if they're shit they're so cheap it doesn't matter.
