My dad and I want one to take to the local track once in awhile. The real nostalgia ones don't have any body work forward of the engine.

haha yeah, and DSG is actually an excellent system.
there's just lots of bitching in the enthusiast circle about this, and about how the mkiv and euro mkv R have mt's, and how they are "real" cars. it's entertaining.
just playing it up.

It's faster then a manual gear box -
If the DSG gearbox is good enough for the Bugatti Veyron, it's good enough for me.
It's the only semi automatic, that when put into manual, is faster shifting then a standard manual. Trust me, i wouldn't have this if it was slower then a normal manual gearbox - the DSG system is mind blowing - so smooth and quick. Think you have 2 clutches, 1 for 1, 3, 5 and 1 for 2,4,6.... so the gear you're going to is already engaged.... its an epic piece of engineering.
It's 4 seconds faster round the top gear track than the old R32... that's how good this car is.... it's very very quick and 4 wheel drive is where it's at, no torque steer, under steer... it's so balanced. If you ever have the chance, drive one...

I wasn't hating man. Don't take it so badly. I also understand perfectly how the system works.
But yeah, I drove both gens of R when I was in the market for a new car. I still prefer the mkiv though. Just personal preference.they're both great.

my bad - it was actually 3 seconds faster then the old Mkiv r32....
Im always intrigued why people like the mkiv better, because the mkv is the better car imo... they ironed out so many problems from the mkiv... i always think it's because the mkiv GTi was such a pice of shit, then the R32 came out and it was epic in comparison, whereas the Mkv GTi is a great car....
Have you seen clips of these with superchargers fitted on you tube? holy shit man!! although, i dont think i'd do that as i wouldn't want to fuck up the gear box / drive train... but people have taken them to 600 bhp +.....

yeah, there's a bunch of insane FI r's out there (HPA TT's seem to be especially popular).
I'll agree with you about the superiority of the mkv layout (the only "good" mkiv's were the 20th and 337 gti's, and of course, the .:R). Maybe I prefer it because it was so seemlingly crazy for the era that it was produced in.
I do think there is something a little bit more unique about the mkiv though. It was more visceral (if you can call the luxury gt visceral). maybe I'm just a sucker for the koenig seats (imo leagues beyond the embarrassing "little" bolsters on the mkv. maybe it's because, though they are both heavy pigs of cars, the iv felt less restricted in that sense? who knows?
I think that it also just comes down to styling. I love the boxy muscular look of the iv, while the v I view as more of a chromed out gti (again, still a good looking car). The performance gap between the mkv gti and R is just too little. With a simple chip, the gti could run circles around the R (while costing and weighing much much less).
It'll be interesting to see what the upcoming R will be like.
ps, do you plan on modding your R?

I don't know yet.... Not looked into it too much. Problem the gti will always have is that it's front wheel drive. 200 hp is about as much useful power you can put through front wheels, the awd system on the r32 is amazing and can take a lot more power. I had a mkv gti and was always tripping traction control... That just doesn't happen with an r33. Despite what people say, it's much much faster then a gti. Plus if you supercharge it, well then you have a awd rocket.

I prefer the more refined styling. I like the mkiv's, and had a mkiv gti as one of my first cars many moons ago- but owning and living with this 08 R32 is a dream, no better car for comfort, practicality and fun. Plus yes, it has a very very addictive soundtrack:)

If I may comment on the DSG/Manual conversation going on:
While technology has advanced to the point where an automated transmission is faster than a human, it still allows less freedom; you're surrendering more control to the car's ECU, control that you would normally have with an MT. No doubt, DSG is a great system (where just a few years ago it was sluggish and annoying), but having DSG also means that, for instance, the car will shift for you at a certain rev threshold, and that you can only shift sequentially; you can't shift down from 4th to 2nd without going through 3rd gear.
On a more intuitive level, it becomes more like driving an automatic; I've driven auto, DSG, and manual, and manual is the only one where I felt like I was really piloting the car and where I felt totally responsible for how the car responded. A manual transmission puts everything the car has to offer at your finger tips, to use as you please. DSG is like traction control: sure, it's a great, helpful system, but you won't be able to fishtail if you want to. You know what I mean?

I agree in that i miss not being able to hold the car on the clutch, and use clutch control etc... block shifting is another issue, but i find it very very quick downshifting if i double or triple tap the paddle... it doesn't even engage the gear, the car knows you are tapping through the gear, so it's not as slow as you'd think.
It's worth it though to get on the power quicker then in a manual. I like it, but it is a shame the manual didn't come to the us... i admit. But i cannot help but be impressed with the technology and how well it does work.

you think it'll ruin the car? i'll post pics at the end of the summer so you can re-assess then

yeah its faster than a normal gearbox, but when do those 4 seconds around the top gear track ever matter at all on the street? unless your timing yourself between stop lights it really means nothing. even when your driving fast. its just less time between each gear, when your actually accelerating its the same. so if you get through that corner on a mountain pass .2 seconds quicker because you can shift quicker who cares?i agree that its actually a really good system, and it actually gives the driver a good amount of control over other systems like the tiptronic, where you try to shift down, and 2 seconds later the downshift happens. the DSG actually does what you tell it to do when you want and i really like that. but still it takes away so much of the experience you get from a manual, heel toe-ing down 3 gears before going into a corner is so much more fun and involving than tapping a paddle 3 times. plus i always felt like there was a little lag in the system, just a tiny bit. but enough to get annoying, you dont get the instant response that you get with a manual just after downshifting and getting back to power.its what i hate about the GTR too, its a street car basically built for fast nurburgring times, and i think they really sacrificed alot to get their times, and it takes away from the car. everything is computer controlled, you make a mistake and get the tail out, the car fixes it for you, you basically point the wheel and the car goes there, it takes no skill to drive it. shit id take a cayman over a GTR because i could care less about how fast a cars nurburgring times are when its my street car, and id rather have control over my car, and great feel, cause thats what makes a car fun. its what alot of the magazines and car reviewers are saying after everyone got over the gtr's speed. now it seems like everyones sick of the car driving for them.
as for the new r32 vs the old, i still liked the old better than the new, and ive driven both multiple times. the old had great feel and felt like a little go-kart. the new one just felt heavy and numb. though it could get around corners quickly, it just didnt have the raw sports car feel of the old one. but then again, if im buying a AWD car im most likely not looking for a raw sports car. though the new one does sound amazing!

yes it will, bmw spent millions making the car look like that, but you think you know better than one of the largest and respected car company's in the world because you can afford a tin of paint.

find some m3 rims if you want nicer ones, and spend your money making it faster.

smoking tail lights = shittiest mod ever

get some m3 rims while you're at it, stockers look like shit.

These are really good points, and I agree with you on all of them. If I had wanted a lairy sports car with AWD I'd of got an STi. My friend has an 09 WRx sti and it's nice, but it feels far to tinny to me, lacks that qaulity GT feel, and that's what I love about the 08 R32. It's an everyday car, that I can still hammer and that really does stick to the road. I do miss a manual gearbox and my next car will be a manual for sure, because like you say, there is a slight lack of involvement. But I really have been impressed with the DSG. If you're just cruising to work, stick it in auto and it is super fuel efficient, then tap a paddle and it comes to life. Fun car, very responsive and a nice place to be. I found the mark iv less poised and balanced on the track, although they're both heavy, very heavy VR6's up front, I think the 08 is heavier though....

instead of spending your money on ghey cosmetic mods, why don't you put it towards something that will make it perform better?
(and if you don't care about performance....try to be a little bit more critical about the aesthetic you're trying to achieve before you go and "murder out" your whip)

this baby's got 120k on her, so i'm not looking into too many engine mods. possibly an air intake and maybe maybe maybe exhaust.

Haha completely agree. I hate all these kids who are tinting the fuck out of their windows and smoke tail lights? Are you like 14? Why do people tint their front windows anyway? It doesn't make you look like a badass.
