Lots of hidden costs in a Dslr setup haha, but now I'm done with buying anything for quite a while. I could have easily spent 1000 more if I didn't find deals also
 
this is just going to make people who cannot afford a crazy good camera feel bad....that being said im not a filmer so maybe i don't know and people are more cool about it that i thought....
 
The thing is I know I and a lot of other people in m&a have worked their asses off for a nice camera setup, and I'm curious to see how much the entire setups actually cost with all the hidden costs. This will also help illustrate the true cost of a Dslr setup

I rent other lenses as I need them. And actually work somewhere that lets me use most of the gear I use.

Thing you have to remember with dslr's is that your spending alot initially but you can always move the glass to another camera. My lenses will always stay in my kit if they're a 2.8. Still feel like I got a heck of a deal for what it was when I got it. Then again I've spent $6000 plus on other cameras before and felt like I had less then I did with my 7D. Just me though.

I know this thread will help people see how many costs are actually incurred when putting together a set up for videography.

I will say though that equipment doesn't mean anything to a certain extent. You should be a film with great audio and shitty video quality and I will love it. You show me a great film with shitty audio quality and great video, I'll hate it.

A few things I've learned in the business as I'm starting out is that purchase your equipment to cater to your market. I was looking at the FS100 or AF100. Would need to put about 6-7g into what I would want. My market however? doesn't need that! For me, the GH1 and GH2 with a few add ons will make me much more money in the long run. When it's time to upgrade I will. But for what I film and who I film for, it's nonsense to drop money I don't have (needing a loan) in order to have quality that isn't vastly that much better for my clients/viewers.

it wont. I know the people of M&A and i've never had a situation where that happened. People support each other's decisions, and understand the work involved. if anything, im embarrassed of how much my set up cost. might sound stupid, but its true
 
Totally agree. I try and be as humble about my camera gear when people ask me about it. I make fun of my friends for buying sever pieces of outerwear and jiberish, but who am I to talk when I blow 4 figures on camera gear?
 
That's why I only buy what I need. I don't waste my money on big matte boxes, shoulder rigs, etc. because I don't need them. Not only is minimalism generally more functional, but as a rule I don't buy camera gear unless it increases profit. I could technically afford an fs100 setup but instead I'm putting that money towards the second half of a tripod and a sound system because that will land me more work, whereas the difference between a 7D and an fs100 (however significant it may be) won't.
 
Well I mean I can see why you need gear, but for the people on ns that don't freelance enough to make a living, buying camera gear is a want. It sucks, because sometimes you don't have the money set aside for the latest and greatest, but it makes getting a new piece of gear that more rewarding; becomes more like getting a new toy than a new piece of equipment.

Having a good camera setup is nice. I'm proud for what I've paid for and I'm grateful for what my parents help me out with financially, but damn, filming/photography is a damn expensive hobby

Agreed entirely. I've recently been wrestling with my desire to pick up an fs100, which I could swing financially after I get a couple checks in, but I've decided to put that money into more lasting items of my kit. I'm currently working with an HVX and T2i and between the two that's enough to handle just about any situation. I've decided that instead of dropping 7k+ on a fs100, I'll continue to add to my lighting and audio kits and make a long term investment on a tripod that will last; no more of these manfrotto shenanigans. My clients are more than happy with the image quality I can get from my current cameras, so why drop unnecessary money at this point?

And to answer the original question; I'm not going to go into detail, but when I packed my bags for a shoot the other day I totalled the contents of my main bag to be right around 10k, not including the light or audio kits we brought along as well... that was a reality check. Granted around 2k of that was in borrowed glass, I'm in it to win it at this point I guess.
 
Yes. It's a very large reality check when You have an absurd amount invested in different Pelican Cases just to protect it's contents. On top of that, have them double locked with different keyed masterlocks, and then u-lock and chain it to something whenever I go out on a shoot.
 
Hmm, I have a slowly growing Camera list.

1. Refurb Canon t2i with 18-55 roughly 600$

2. Memory cards and extra battery around 50$

3. Walmart Camera bag and tripod (upgrading soon) 70$

4. Standard GoPro and 720 GoPro idk say 300+$

Soon to have new tripod, and FL mount for my sisters old lenses.

Total roughly: around 1,100 but it is an on going investment.
