Possibility of site wide darkmode? (app + desktop?)

I want to start off and say that I'm not a developer so I have very limited knowledge in how difficult this would be to implement

dark modes have been gaining a lot of momentum recently and I think it could have a ton of benefit if there was an option to browse NS late night without a blinding mostly white interface. I recently installed Mojave on my Mac and dark mode system wide in macOS is a very welcomed option. Wish they would add it system wide on iOS too

Both the desktop website and the mobile app could benefit from this, and the app especially for people browsing it on phones with OLED screens. Depending on how dense the content is, having white text on a pure black #000000 background can use ~50-60% less battery power vs black text on white.

I understand branding is big and NS's brand has been black/orange/mainly white for the decade I've been a member, so I wouldn't suggest making dark mode the default, but having an option would be much appreciated. Thoughts?

sitting on NS past when I should be and the white light is blinding compared to literally every other window/app that are all now natively dark on my Mac. Tried a few Safari extensions that promise to convert white-based webpages to a faux dark mode with unfortunately shit results on NS :(

Would love to hear any sort of insight from NS on why a dark theme is/isn't possible to bake into the site natively? Don't mean to sound like a nag, I understand resources are limited and you guys got other shit that takes priority, but any sort of comment on this would be appreciated!

From what I understand, its not difficult but quite time consuming to create a dark mode for the site and tbh we've got a bunch of other important tech issues/plans that we are going to work on first, but this is something we're going to look into in the summer.

hey thanks for the reply, glad to know its in your radar. Does this answer apply for both the desktop site and app?

Yes, our app is basically the mobile site wrapped in an app, so changes we make to desktop go to mobile as well.

Not sure what you're going for with that but heres what my browser looks like with the extension.

My mind is blown, I've never heard of this before, I just installed the extension haha

Haha word. Works pretty well you just have to manually toggle new websites (alt+shift+a if you don’t wanna use the mouse)

Yeah my fans fire up when i reload some sites, being able to toggle is nice, it works decent for NS.

thanks, I’m a full safari guy for keychain/battery reasons but I’ll install chrome to check it out, could be quite useful on other sites too

eheath would it be possible to reverse engineer this in a way to speed up NS native dark mode?

1 year later bump to check in about the possibility of this feature, the NS app is starting to really stick out like a sore thumb now that every other app I use regularly has converted to system light/dark auto switching w/ iOS 13, plus MacOS has had it since 2018 Mojave. I think Android has similar system wide dark mode also so it would benefit a very significant amount of users

Another vote for a dark mode option.

I use it when im on Fb and on Yt.

on my phone I have an app called Night mode. On the computer I have Flux which dims the screen at sunset automatically.
