Popularity in high school vs. skiing ability.

I don't why why the fuck I was thinking about this but it just popped into my head.

I honestly believe if I was less popular (not saying i was that popular) in high school, I would be a better skier.

Anyone follow this? questions? comments

wow. i already know this thread is going to suck.

Maybe if you were super unpopular, you would have no friends and just practice skiing all the time. And start your own company and make your own pro model, but never put anyone else on the team.

Double post but, if you screw up and nobody knows you, nobody cares. If you're popular on the other hand, you'll get raped by publicity (in this case other high school kids).

i can say that skiing has probably brought down my popularity in high school. I went to a new school junior year (last year) and can remember 10+ times where i turned down someone inviting me to a party because i had to get up at 6 the next morning to get to the mountain.

I would pick skiing over partying any day, but that has probably somewhat affected my popularity.

I dont care at all though, because i guarantee i will never see 95% of the kids in my highschool ever again after this year and i can ski the rest of my life.

high school popularity? wtf?

yeah if you hang out with a bunch of "popular" faggots all the time instead of smoking blunts in the woods and riding around on skateboards then you're going to not going to be very good at skiing...no offense

coming from a predominate snowboarding area i can say that people in my school know me because i ski... idk if that makes me popular, but i like being different than everyone else

I was definitely not the most popular in highschool and I would say I'm pretty good at skiing. If I was less or more popular I would probably the the same goodness though (unless I started partying like friday and saturday every week.

not really sure how you measure popularity..? but yea im a pretty good skier and i have lots of friends. people know me as a crazy good skier in my hood. (not saying its true)

I can honestly say that it has downed my popularity because everyone is always having parties in the winter but i gotta ski/

My skiing abilty was actually progressing the most when I was in H-school and I was defensive captin of the football team, played AA hockey and partied most weekends.

something that pisses me off in my school is theres this group of like 15 kids that think they are so popular and they are the most annoying kids ever and everybody knows it but the part that pisses me off is they literally go up to the ski hill with the whole group of 15 kids every weekend and i have to be with them on the greyhound for like an hour every weekend. oh and i forgot to mention they suck ass at skiing, biggest gapers ever. im not saying that its bad to go up to the mountain and have a good time witha bunch of your friends, especially if you all kill it. but these kids are so annoying and you would wanna punch them in the face if you saw them. i personally have quite a few friends in junior high and i dont think anyone has anything against me but theres only like 3 or 4 people that i enjoy going skiing with and i find it so much more chill to just go up with like a chairlift full of guys. back to the popularity part, i dont think it really matters how popular/unpopular you are, if you dont have the right attitude or dont love skiing then you wont be a great skier either way. yea you could practice more if you were a loner maybe but you dont have to be a loner to go up to the mountain alot and when you ski with other people they can have good influences on your skiing and i always learn from stuff that my buddies are doing. but yea i dunno..

^haha, yup. and why those kids were so "popular" was because they all went out every friday and saturday night and got super shitfaced. and one day, they cam to the hill i ski at. i laughed and i was the one who was "shit hot" for once. and they were, well, way out of there element and i was in mine. its nice to see what people are actually like out of their comfort zone.

Agreed it's so weird but funny to see the "jocks" strugling to go down a simple hill and they like are amazed when you do it with such ease...and like you said for one day they know the like I guess real you and get to see you when you are doing what you love

my high school experience=drunk. but really if it wasn't for skiin i don't think i would have made it through hi-school, it always gave me something to look forward to.

Her: Hey we should hang out this weekend, maybe see a movie. Me: Oh yeah I'd like to, but there's a nor'easter coming through this weekend... Her: Uh-huh. You're going skiing again, right. Well if its that important to you... Hmm, that's awkward. You get the picture.

In my opinion, the two had absolutely no correlation when I was in high school. Everyone knew I was infatuated with skiing, I would still go out every time there was a party and I would just suck it up and wake up at 6 to go to the hill. Nobody cared if I sat in for a night, they would just get on my back about how fun it was.

who cares?

highschool is weak, just have a good time and enjoy yourself. if you like who you are, then you are set

well im sure i would have more friends if i snowboarded, but all the friends i hang with are some of the best i could ever have

im pretty sure in the only freestyle skier at my school..... we have a bunch of gapers and some racers . so yeah at my school it doesnt have any correlation

thats the best first post ive ever read. most of them are like " skiing is cool " of some gay shit like that.

well done.

No way. The reason most kids in high school are popular is because they have high confidence levels/the idea that they can do whatever they want. It's the same attitude that makes people good at skiing.

Also, popular kids generally have a lot of friends so have a bigger pool to recruit a legit crew to ride with from.

I know that personally at my school, all the good skiers/boarders were all pretty "popular" and honestly the ski area was just another place to kick it.

I loved when at my old Jr. high the most popular kids who all played football and baseball would tell me skiing was for pussies. Then I would see them up there, total gapers who buy the nicest Oakley goggles to have the name and were wearing bape sweatshirts. I see them in the lift line and they're like "look it's that fag that has no life." They ride up on the chair with me and they're just like all right "mr. pro, let's see you hit something." So I point out like a 20 foot stepdown and it was one of my first runs and I was like I'll five that jump. "Bullshit! I doubt you could actually do that, you're just gonna ski down and ditch us." Not even a big jump and I five it and they were like "how the hell did you do that!" "I thought skiing was for pussies, so I bet you could hit the 40 footer up top there" I said. They were like "We can't even fucking clear the beginner jumps!" "Don't talk shit on me or skiing then." That was that and they shut their shit talking mouths the rest of the year. It wasn't even a large jump of anything, or a crazy trick and they flipped out about it. It's always fun to ride up the triple chair and have the popular kid in the middle and one of my buds on the left and we just talk about a bunch of stuff they have no clue about and they feel so out of place. I'm kinda like I know everyone at the school but I'm not one to hang with popular people.

i thought this was gonna be about how people think popular kids are inherently skilled at things lol. i see it all the time, people think in a fight, that the kid whos more popular is gonna beat the shit out of the kid whos less popular, which really isnt always how it goes. and people think that someone who isnt popular cant possibly be good at something, like skiing, or skateboarding, or whatever but thats usually untrue too. most of the people who are popular are crap at sports outside football, hockey, basketball.

ya dude i get this too, i come from an area where not many people ski or ride so im good for the area cause no one else is there, but then everyone knows that i am good so then when I do see people on the slopes there just like o your good do somthing good and it gets annoying, but i ski for me cause its my passion, not for what other people think

Jocks are like that with basically all things that aren't a team sport. This includes; any extreme sport, an artistic hobby such as painting or drawing, any hobby that requires skill like woodworking, videography and photography, that's what i think from my experiences. But then when they try and do any of those things it's seemingly impossible to them, but it doesn't matter, because most of them will quit doing it and call it stupid and proclaim that the only reason that you can do it is because yu practice all day. I also have come to find that people who participatein and are good at extreme sports, can also be good in what i will call normal sports. But this doesn't seem to work the other way around, most jocks can't do any extreme sports. And i'm thinking it takes more coordination to do a cork 720 then it does to do most things in "normal sports".

ehh... the popular kids at my hs that snowboarded really really sucked, and they were the only other ones in my school that went to the hill regularly, so im not so sure...

i guess i'm fairly popular. I stopped hanging out with stupid people and douchebags though, so that takes out like 80% of my school.

but i do tend to slay at backcountry, and i'm alright at park, so that could just be your shitty school
