Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, top models these are just some living examples of the 7 deadly sins. Another example is Todd Bretuzzi; his on-ice moment of angry still reverberates.
The 7 deadly sins are not as bad as they once were, as some of them are considered out dated. Pop culture is normalizing the 7 deadly sins. Yes the sins are becoming more and more acceptable.
Consider Pride, the mother of all sins. Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, Look at Envy, is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. Why we do it all the time? because other people are so much luckier, smarter, more attractive, and better than you. Just think about Gluttony, it is an unreasonable desire to consume more than that which one requires. Is it not true of North America? Lust is an unnecessary craving for the pleasures of the body. Lust can be found in cruelty and revenge. Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. Reflect on this quote by Frank Buchman “There is enough in the world for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed�, Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. The reasons why the 7 deadly sins are not as appalling anymore because society is not as religious as it was many decades ago. A capitalistic society encourages some of these behaviors like greed, pride and envy. The population today is captivated and attracted to ideals like lust, gluttony greed and sloth.
The origin of the 7 deadly sins is almost as old as Christianly itself. They are described in various ways through the bible. If you were to break a sin you would be sent to hell, and in all of these7 sins there were terrible things you had to do in hell. For example, Sloth you would be thrown into snake pits. For greed, boiled alive in oil, for pride you would be dismembered alive, for envy you would be put in freezing water. For lust you would be smorthed in fired, and last but not least for gluttony you would be forced to eat toads, rats and snakes. With all this to fear no wonder the 7 sins were obeyed. They were obeyed because people feared damnation and believed that they had a fatal effect on your spiritual health. Today in Modern society our values have changed. They have changed because society has changed their religious perspective over many decades. Some of the most difficult issues our society is facing are because we have broken the 7 sins. They are terrorism, violence, and obesity. Statistics say that more than half the world is over weigh. With greed we are slowly destroying the earth’s environment. Envy promotes work harder and keep up with the Jones’s. Corporations reward managers on the importance of the bottom line which promotes the survival of the fittest and not how your treat your fellow human being.
We as a society have allowed pop culture to normalize the 7 deadly sins. And in doing so we no longer know any limits and that is dangerous in itself because it means we don’t develop discipline. Limits teachers that we should start again. With no discipline society keeps pushing the limits.
