^Damn true, nobody has much to do during deployments so they watch lots of movies. In the last 2 years I've become so sickened with hollywood, I can't watch that garbage anymore. About a month ago I was at work and got bored so I started writing letters to random hollywood celebrities about the sad state of things with how much contol hollywood has over our modern, empty culture. We're just a bunch of consumers and our 'culture' is basically driven by material goods, and the corporations that produce the stuff. I can't believe anyone is actually defending our pop culture with hamburgers and movies. If you actually thing this filler gives your life meaning you can believe that. But culture isn't movies, hamburgers, and cars, it's tradtions, family, and comminality. It's funny, but many people believe that those who have pride in they're regional/ethnic culture are ignorant, and somewhat racist, therefore dicounting the need for differences in peoples 'culture'. Case in point, mainland Japan... Where so many traditions, and beliefs where held in the highest regard only to be cast off in the name of modernization. Now Japan still celebrates many of it's traditional holidays, but they don't have the meaning they once had; kind of like Christmas to us westerners. I can't say that about my time spent on Okinawa. Although it's a part of Japan it has it's own culture which is very strong and active here, and it's great to witness their traditions being practiced like they are after living in a country which really has none with any meaning. I don't know, pop-culture is just an empty pool in which to throw the latest trend or newest movie and assimilate into some kind of borg like collective and call it ours...

no one has to participate in any of it. you dont have to turn on the tv. you dont have to buy the newest nickleback/creed/(insert crappy rock band here) album. the remnants of the pre technological revolution culture(art/music/literature) is still readily available, granted you cant push a button and have a book read to you (unless you get a book on tape/cd) you cant just push a button and become a musician. anything that is worth doing is going to take some effort. as skiers we all should be able to grasp that concept. just try picking up a sibeilius recording instead of that killer puddle of mudd cd you want so badly. you might just start to like it.

yeah. there were going to be emmissions controls put on manufacturing plants in industrialized nations, while giving developing nations a free pass to pollute. that would make production a ton more expensive in the US, canada europe etc, while making it even more dirt cheap for nations like india and china. which are the nations who pollute the most.

I thing we both agree that pop culture is hugely valuable to an economy. What we disagree on is the value of a vigorous economy. What I was attempting to illustrate was if it's so bad, then why is it so easy to indulge in. I'm not a capitalist, but I don't think you need to be to believe in growing economies, because even the ideals of communism and Marxism rely on a healthy economy. I suppose it is unfair of me to argue this with you seeing as how you did end your post by admitting that it was just a idea.

My traditions include going to movies on friday nights, and getting blazed on saturdays. what's wrong with that? i'm completely content eating hamburgers and watching funny movies. what more can you expect without becoming one of those consumers you are talking so much about. Sinister, it's not so much the pop culture, or what I like to call consumerism that's making rich countries richer and poor countries poorer, it's just pure greed. Allow me to attempt to explain:

Let's say that the way the world is running right now is at 100% global economy. Let's say that developed countries account for 80% of the global economy while the developing ones account for 20%. If the developed countried were to give up say production and exports they would lose half of their economy so they now account for 40% (half of 80%). But since we're giving it up for the less developed countries to start thriving, their economy doubles, so they are now running at 40% (20% * 2). That's good right? No, because the global economy is now running at just 80% (40% from developed countries plus 40% from developing countries). The world as a whole is worse off.

Now, what I feel should be done is to continue to allow the developed countries to endulge in producing and exporting, however, we need to realise that by not allowing developing countries to quickly catch up our economy is profiting 20%. That 20% should be used to help developing countries and not kept for greed.

But developing nations,as you said,should receive 20% ,but they are not.They are left by themselves.Someones are stronger than others and help balance the economy of those developing nations to an acceptable level of prosperity,but it is well beyond what should be expected for such a wealthy earth.

i dont think MOST team sports are that bad. pro basketball football and baseball i will say are awfull. nobody needs 4 mil a year just for playing sports. but what abou the MLL (major league lacrosse) they only get like 50k a year! which is enough for them to live nicly and then work durring the off season but it is in no way WAY TOO MUCH like other sports. pluss i play sports for the rush that you get and the exicetement and intencity i would never play for the money.

in my mind, anyone that says team sports are bad is just pissed off cuz they probably got cut or they are too pussy to try out for any sports. sports, especially high school, generate money that goes to the fucking people who run it. people just dont volunteer their god damn saturdays and every fucking day of the week to coach fucking baseball out of the goodness of their heart! they get paid for that shit! and when the team goes to state and wins, it's a huge FUCK YOU to everybody that said they couldnt do it!
