Poor Boyz Cinematographer Selling Equipment

I am a former PBP cinematographer. I shot for Session 1242, Ready, Fire, Aim, Happy Dayz, Propaganda and The Game.

I am selling all of my 16mm camera equipment right now. This stuff is perfect if you plan on shooting in the action sports world.

I have two different camera set-ups: An Arriflex and Bolex. From wide-angle to zoom, each set-up has all the lenses you'd need to kill it out there, filming professionally or for yourself.

Each set-up includes a camera bag, too. Other equipment I have for sale is a tripod and light meter.

Everything is in great shape and hasn't been touched since my last shoot at Mt. Hood in May of '03.

If you're interested in the gear and want the details, email me:

cody@subluxclothing.com or call (303) 523-8307.

What the fuck Raisig?

The chances of somebody on this site actually being able to afford that equipment, let alone knowing how to utilize it properly are next to none.

Honestly, how many kids on NS have the computer setup necessary to be able to do anything with 16mm film other than cutting and pasting it the old fashioned way? Let alone owning the necessary capture equipment?

I would assume a man like you would have the contacts to sell that equipment without resorting to the vague hope that somebody out there has thousands of dollars just kicking around to buy your dope setup and the equipment needed to go with it.

Why are you not selling this somewhere much more appropriate where you'll at least get something resembling its current value for it?

^you're probably right no one here has a fucking digitizing lab asshat.

My weiner is probably harder than yours.

Theresa shitload of ppl who visit this site requalrly so maybe he jsut wanted to see first if he could help someone startin out with their equipment before dishin it off to others.

maybe to give the chance to someone who knows is shit and have no contact to be able to get some 16mm cams

You don't capture 16mm directly from the camera to your computer. No film companies in skiing do it on their own. You have to send it to a lab and they put it on MiniDV or Digi Beta or another format, than you capture it to your computer.

Anyone can do that. Its just a lot more exspensive for the average joe and really doesnt make sense.

If i had the money id be interested. my dad is a filmmaker so i have acess to film processing, converting and hes also sponcerd by Kodac so i could get free film.

I'm selling the equipment because my cine days are behind me.

i'm full-tilt on sublux right now.

to answer that dude's comment about why i'm offering it to the NS crowd and not some tech-geeks: because when you're not in the scene, it's really hard to find equipment to buy - you don't know where to start looking, let alone who to trust and what equipment to trust. it's an incredible opportunity for a guy looking to get into it all.

by the way, i was finally able to post that photo of my equipment.

you'll have to email cody@subluxclothing.com or call 303-523-8307 to find out prices and details.

peace, cody

you can put 16mm footage on minidv, and it still keeps the unbelievable quality? how does that work??

you process the 16mm film at a lab. you then take the film to a telecine house, and they transfer the film digitally onto miniDV, or whatever medium you want it transfered to.

and the minidv can retain the picture quality?

regardless of what you transfer film to, it retains the picture quality ... that is except for VHS of course.

all the ski film companys transfer their film onto digital beta, miniDV, etc. it just depends on what is easiest to hook into their editing system.

isn't there a conection between the # of times the camera clicks to how much it will prob cost you to convert it?

.:l[Tyler]l:.

the time i have seen raw footage from cameras that where set up next to a 16mm camera you hear the 16mm camera clicking as it records. thats the clicks i'm talking about.

and one of my buddies that records said that the conversion from 16mm to digital was expensive as hell and you could literal break it down to a dollar a click or something like that.

.:l[Tyler]l:.

the clicks are the film perforations being threaded through the camera as the motor turns the spools of film. there is no way to count the clicks because you're hearing like 48 clicks/second.

yea. im not really familiar/knowledgable with mm film. but i do know when in the ski movies u sometimes hear the sound of the "clicks" whether thats an effect or legit, not too sure. but i know that sound is what he's talking about. its pretty fast.

i think the sound of the clicks is kinda cool when u hear it in the background of 1 or 2 shots

i love that sound. whether its real or not.

Most people cant even squeez half the quality out of their GL1 shots that that camera is capable of. 16mm is way over most peoples head, but definetly good luck trying to hustle that.

BA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA, clicks.... HA HA HA no seriously i agree that the clicking sound effect is awesome. HA HA HA HA.

the clicks are the shutter opening and closing. the faster your shutter speed the more film you use up.

lets say you want a nice slow motion you bump the frame capture rate to lets say 100 frames per second or if you want a regular shot you do like 25 frames per second. although you are shooting one second of life motion in both cases. but you are using 4 times as much film in the slow motion shot as in the regular shot. so if you want to shoot 8 minutes of film with the higher shutter speed you will be using 4 times more film. so the answer is yes the more clicks you get the more expensive the film transfer will be.

as far as not many people on this site not being able to afford this equipment I disagree. skiing is a very expensive sport and most people who do ski are pretty well of financially (or at least their parents are)

and for people not knowing how to use the camera most people with an average inteligence can learn how to use all of that equipment in less than a week.

some time the "click click click" is some one with a 35mm slr still camera, and a digital video camera picking up the sound from that.

i bet atlantaski's parents would buy it for him

my main issue is the price of digitizing the film...

its really cool when you shoot at high speeds like 80-120 frames per second because you hear a sorta fffffffshhhhhh sound. you can tell that the camera is on the verge of breaking and if you touch it it you can feel it vibrate. its a pretty cool fealing when your used to using Mini DV cameras all the time.

digitizing is a little bit of a pain in the ass but it really isn't ridiculously expensive for what you are getting done.

its a professional service so costs are professional prices they are understandable when ou are going to be gaining money from the work but if you are not going to gain money it is very expensive.

the price is about $200 to $300 per hour of labor, 10 minutes of film = 1 hour of labor.

this is at a regular speed not high speed shutter speeds.

actually, you could probably do 30 minutes of film in one hour. also, students get 1/2-off pricing for telecine hours. so like 30 minutes of footage for $150.

ooooh, well that puts awhole new twist on things doesnt it....hmm

yo^ up there its 24 frames not 25, haha sorry, yea great set up thoi, if i wasnt a junior in hs and iw as in college id prob buy it, but yea great deal right there.

www.aftermathproductions.com,

So in shooting movie film changing the shutter speed changes the frame rate? In photography, if you keep the frame rate constant (say 5 fps), and change the shutter speed, the duration of the clicks changes but there are still only 5 fps. Are you saying that with 16mm, changing the shutter speed creates more fps?

I'm not trying to prove you wrong in any way, I'm just confused as obviously I have never shot 16mm.

I used 25 frames per second which is the PAL standard as oposed to the NTSC which is 23.976 frames per second because for the point I was making using high speed frame rate a number that distributes perfectly into 100 made my explanation alot simpler.

for a regular camera like a Nikkon F3 (using this as an example because I have one) changing the shutter speed just changes the timer on the shutter. so that it stays open for a certain amount of time. this allows more or less light to enter the camera the longer it stays open the more light goes on the film. imagine the film is a canvas light is like paint and the longer you leave the canvas ecposed to paint. the longer its exposed the more layers of paint you will have on that single canvas.

on the other hand a video camera has 2 mechanisms one is opening and closing the shutter while another one is rolling the film. changing frame rate is just a matter of making each of those mechanisms work faster. at video speeds the human eye cant tell the difference between 24 frames per second or 100 frames per second.

when you say Frame rate in camera im not sure what you mean. do you mean cameras with motor drives for multiple shots? or are you refering to exposure settings?

hopefully the info above was enough to answer your question if it didnt answer it or I missunderstood it please refrase it and ill try to reexplain. keep in mind im not an expert on this subject so I might be wrong on some things.

although im in desperate need of a new camera i probably cannot afford this and don't have the time to develop the film

Yeah I meant motor drive. Thanks for clearing that up.

shooting with 16 mm sounds like it takes so much more effort and knowledge... it fascinates me. and i also love when you hearthe whirring sound in raw footage in one or two shots
