Poles vs. No poles

I guess I have to go buy poles this year, because Pep and Andy are using them in Contrast.
But seriously, does it really matter if they use poles anymore? I mean a lot of you guys stopped using poles because of them. What are you gonna do now?

some people like the fact that when people see them all thugged out with tall-ts and bandanas skiing without poles they go "ooooh he must be good". 98% about image. 2% people learning hand-drags and plants

constantly skiing without poles is going to ruin your overall style for sure...

probs a good idea not to use them for hand drags/plants but i think its rediculous to not use poles for everything else...

Well I may as well say it. I ski with poles, and always have. I just wanted to make this thread after watching Contrast, so that the topic can be discussed. I mean there are pages of threads about poles vs. no poles when they stopped using them a few years ago. What is the impact of them using them again going to be? How much influence do these guys actually over us kids? I mean, we're not skiing for fun or anything are we?

Well, either join the "steeze sticks 4 life" or the "pole-less and proud" bandwagon.

I switch back and forth personally. Sometimes I find that poles just get in the way, sometimes I really like riding with them.
Don't let another person's style dictate yours, otherwise you become a mindless sheep.

All I know is that they work very hard for very little money. Some people argue that they are taking away jobs from british folk though.

Just emulate my park style, it's steezy as all hell.
No poles, wearing a snuggy, throwing down on snowblades. Mmmm

i've decided the short poles/no poles is over-rated. now it's gonna be all about poles longer than your skis. yeah. i want poles up to if not above my head.

well i didnt actually mean style. i just feel you lose a lot of body tension when skiing without poles cuz your arms are pretty much just hanging down from your torso since they dont need to hold up anything in front of your body but maybe thats just me...

well i also judge as an alpine skier - if you shred rails all day it might be a benefit.

its obvious we kids often feel the need to imitate the guys we see in ski movies. tall tees and stuff are cool but i think its up to ourselves to figure out what we like better in this case and i dont recommend skiing without poles...

Cause most people don't even know how to use their poles properly when skiing and just kind of hold them in the wrong spot and look silly.
Using poles properly will bring your weight forward and also help in completing the flexion/extension process.
People who don't use poles often have a much wider stance to compensate for their weight going back which can greatly affect your turns and eventually could lead to really sloppy style and make skiing all mountain more difficult.
However, a really good skier who switches to not using poles will probably be able to continue not using poles in the park with out a problem. It really just depends on how good you are before you switch to no poles.
When I was learning half pipe I skied most of the day with out poles.... but I definitely prefer skiing with them.

If I'm at my local mountain, I never use poles. I know the place well enough to know I dont need them. But on any pow day, or day to another mountain I always use poles.

I use poles but i dont have anything against no poles cus of garrett russell who hardly ever uses poles and still rips it up

and i thought we got past last years argument the year prior.
you kids here are way to concerned about the most retarded stuff. it still amazes me.

You guys don't get it! In Hunting Yeti last year, Pep and Andy still weren't using poles. BUT now they are using poles again in Contrast! That means that everyone will use poles again... Right?

dear-god-make-it-stop.jpg

i ski without pols if i am just messing around or trying to learn a new trick in park, because i realized that landing on pols hurts, most of the time, and it is just that much more stuff to hike back up and get after a rag doll. but if it is a pow day then i ski with pols for sure.

i'm dangerously close to shooting my puppy...nobody wants that

imo nothing is stupider than skiing without poles. they're so useful especially in the bc. a little news flash, when you're way back in the bc nobody can see what you look like except the friend who I HOPE you're skiing with, so riding no poles and wearing XL saga isn't necessary. if you care more about image than safety and practicality, go die. no poles leads to leaning back, terribly formed turns, flailing arms, and maybe a slight benefit on the occasional hand drag that you do off massive cliffs because you're sooo sick, right?

so go press those calves into the backs of your boots thinking you're afterbanging in pow on center mounted hellbents with no poles while thinking you're the man

sorry for being a douche but no poles is just so retarded and it has been discussed SO MANY FUCKING TIMES

i dont use poles because i snowboarded for 7 years before i skied, so it feels so unnatural to have poles in my hands

skiing no poles for a short amount of time can make you a better skier, racers do it to improve balance, and if you can keep your tricks clean without poles, then they will be perfect when you pick them back up. But only skiing no poles is dumb.

dude i couldn't politely disagree more. i never really thought about dropping my poles until those guys kinda started it. it was a new idea so i tryed it out, like a lot of others. I normally ride with poles, but I am the first to admitt that i drop my poles on more than a handful of pow days, and for a few days here and there in the park. i don't really dabble with the afterbang but it helps me keep my hands quiet.
its just something different to do. mix it up.
