Pole Straps...

What are the opinions on poll straps?

I always have used them, but was speaking to a mate the other day who broke his thumb real bad because of them...Well them and the crash...

I've never really thought about it before, but is it a bit dicey using straps?

I broke fingers on both my hands(seperate incidents)last winter, and yeah, pole straps have alot to do with it, but at the end of the season I was skiing with 2 broken hands and no pole straps and not wearing the straps(or maybe just having hurt hands)makes it hard to hold onto the poles and affects your balance on rails and stuff...

both my brother and i have torn tendons in our thumbs from those leki trigger straps that fit onto your gloves. they dont let you get your hand far enough away from the pole if you fall to pull your thumb out of the way. no i ski no straps so i can ditch my poles if i know its gonna be a nasty fall

ummm you need to know how to use the straps so they come off when you crash. or better yet dont come off when yuo crash. if you dont want them to come off like me i usually put my hand though the loop and then roll my wrist so that the lopp gets tighter and i am actually holding on to the strap. the strap is between the grip of the pole and my hand for added control. this way their is no way to harm yourself when you are crashing.

Actually, thats probably the worst way you can hold your poles as far as the prevention of thumb injuries go. After dislocating my thumb a few years ago, I just don't use pole straps anymore.

Some people are trying to snowboard here!

Oh I get it. Sorry to ruin your day.

dude a thumb problem has nothing to do with straps, thats called when you fall your opening your hand flat and trying to brace yourself. in turn you thumb takes the blunt of the impact and gets hurt by over extending it. i know ive got a broken thumb that never healed nor was never looked at. and everyyear atleast once i come down hard on my thumb and its the most excrutiating pain ever. i play it off and get back out the next day.

and i was trying to say my method will help prevent injuries, its not to release the poles from your hands. it will help by keeping the straps tight so they dont get wrapped around any fingers

d-loc is 100% right it has nothing to do with your straps. whoever thinks so is a dumbfuck, it all has to do with putting your thumb out when you fall and people with hitch-hikers thumbs are more subseptible to the injury then others. Last season i broke my thumb after landing on it first when i overshot a table. i basically just set it back myself and had a brace on for a few weeks.

i've come up with a theory this season that i might try out. basically whenever i fall the first thing i do is open my hand so my thumb sticks out (can't do much to help this because its just a natural reaction) but what i have thought to do is tape your thumb to your tip of your pointer finger so that your hand looks like an O.K. this way you land on your fist instead of having your thumb out.

a kid i know broken both thumbs last winter at the same time.. but yea when u fall just make sure u keep your fist closed and u should be alright.

`

i dont use the straps and ive dislocated my thumb, its from jamming your fist down to catch yourself your thumb hits ground first.

so moral of the story... let your body take the blunt of the hit then use your arms to cussion the fall.

instinct is to put your hands out but try to just land on your body, trust me it will feel much better after a few minutes
