Pole plants

So I like no poles. It just feels cleaner I guess. Helps me do grabs/hand drags too because I suck. I'll definitely bring my poles if there's pow, but most other days I feel like I'm not really doing anything with em.

People say that pole planting makes your skiing better, and then post a video of some dude on a groomer as evidence of the superiority of pole plants. I have yet to see any thoughts on what pole planting actually does to help (balance, timing, why do you need to hold poles for this?). I personally don't care at all about groomers, they're just what's in between fresh tracks and things to jump off of.

So am I putting myself at a disadvantage here? Are pole plants essential for good skiing technique?

They're kinda rare these days. You can grow your own though. Fill a pot up with snow and jam a ski pole right in the middle. If you keep it at the right temperature the ski pole will grow roots and bloom.

Recommended pH for the soil?

i have no idea what the fuck you are talking about but get some poles. i feel like my style, stability and control gets way better. only thing is that my creativity isn't always there since i can't put my hand down for doing dumb tricks like tripods, prenose, styleturns etc.

No soil, just snow. Neutral pH is ideal, but if you're having trouble you can tear open a handwarmer and sprinkle the contents on your pole plant once a week to give it some additional nutrients.

I learned to ski with poles. I was taught as mentioned eariler timing, rhythm and keeping the hands forward. This season Ive been going without and I still can do all those without the poles.I feel more free and I felt they just got in the way and it opens up for more creative options with your hands.

I havent tried it but how do people with short fingers do grabs with their pole in hand?

Companies like Line make poles with pretty thin grips, almost the same width of the pole.. *pointy sticks with grips* - would recommend their poles

pole plants only really help when youre skiing bumps. yeah you can plant into a nice carve on corduroy but you can also just not and get the exact same turn. ive been skiing with poles recently to help me keep my arms down but thats like literally the only thing theyre good for if im not in a mogul field

Pole plants really help get your weight forward consistently when making tight turns on shit-your-pants steep terrain. With a proper pole plant your body is in the correct position it needs to be in before every turn.

If you're not in the park then please use some poles. If you ski without poles on the rest of the mountain people will think you're a park rat and shit at reg skiing.

Switched back to poles this season after going no poles for 7 years. Don't get me wrong, I loved skiing without poles but I had a sudden change in heart this year. I think I just wanted to be different than everyone else because 95-98% of park skiers in Minnesota don't use poles. And getting speed without having to do your best Wayne Gretzky impersonation is pretty sweet.

Aside from the occasional thumb bruise from slamming on them they don't really get in the way, they just add another aspect of skiing that you have to control. And in my unpopular opinion, if you got two identical tricks (one with poles, one without) the one with poles is going to look better. Especially if you've got big pow baskets, straight aesthetic.

they throw your weight forward and set you up for your turn but if ur a decent enough skier u shouldn't need them

also poles are gay

If you ski park you do you, but as far as all mtn/freeride goes you need that shit, not just for turns but if you want to stomp some fatty cliffs or big sends to hardpack you gotta have poles to 4 point those landings. Sure you could do it without poles but guarantee you'll be stomping a lot more stuff with poles. Skiing without poles is defs a fun time and get more creative with stuff, but you won't be charging the way you would if you had poles.

Do people still actually use gay as an insult? I thought that was some 2005 playground trash talk. Weird to see it brought back.

Uhhhh don't use that tone with me you stupid motherfucking bitch. Have a shitty Christmas.

Skiing bumps or trees they are definitely essential. Just ripping around the mountain I'll more then likely have them to, but for park its such a waste.

I ski park sometimes with poles, sometimes without. I feel like they make spins(especially spins onto rails) harder, probably because they make my arms feels heavy. I also find it impossible to grab with poles. I agree that when skiing anywhere with bumps, pow, trees, or steeps poles have a benefit, and I would ski all mountain with poles but I currently don't own any and don't wanna spend 100$ or more on adjustable length poles.

Anyone who skis outside of the park without poles looks and skis like a fucking dumbass

I feel like the only way to settle this is to have a no poles vs poles movie contest. And then it would still be like 50/50.
