Polar Bears = Threatened Species?

WTF? Apparently the arctic ice on which they live is melting due to global warming. Discuss...

Yeah my bio teacher was talking about this and some blonde chick was like 'well stick em all in ski dubai then' loled for like half an hour.

ya. watch "an inconvenient truth". the warm water in the ocean causes the ice caps to melt (where they live) and they can't survive. you probably already knew that tho. its sad. and its because of us.

well if you call going from 5,000 polar bears, to 50,000 polar bears, in the time span of 50 years (as far as i know, correct me if the dates are wrong) then yes you could say they are going extinct...

Inconveinient truth is also full of al,ot of overexagerated shit tho, although some of it will be tru in about 10 years.

ahhhhhhhh you just used "an inconvenient truth" as a source, hahahahahah

you do realize that even the UN says that some of Gores stats are wrong..

my question is, if you all believe evolution is true, that species come and go with no purpose, but on genetic accidents, why are we obliged or moved to save the polar bears?

An inconvenient truth is a perfect example of everything thats wrong with america...

NS is a perfect example of everything thats great about america...

Polar Bear numbers are increasing in Canada, not decreasing. I don't know about Alaska or Russia, but we don't have a problem here.

Actually if anyone does read it should make a great physics report (Read "The Chilling Stars" if you decide to go through with it)... its nice to read about something positive forr the skiing community for a change...

social darwinism. survival of the fittest, if the polar bears cant adapt to their environment, they are weak and dont "deserve" to live. i see this as trying to stop production of beef because they kill cows to get it. if the polar bears arent strong enough to survive a changing environment, they dont deserve to live.

so what about the iraqi's? and the indians we massacred during the exploration of united states? and industrialization?

thats different, those are great examples of people fighting and losing, but the polar bears arent fighting anything. the polar bears have an environment that is changing, and they cant adapt to be able to survive. the indian or the iraqis dont have to adapt to anything, they are fighting (or were fighting) a war and are losing (lost). i see them as completely different things

because there is a difference when animals go extinct due to defunct genetics, and when they got extinct because of human caused habitat distruction.

watch the bbc report, and just note the amount of ice that has decreased over the years.

not at all.. this shows their inability to adapt to a new environment. conservation biology runs into a problem when applied with biological science. if animals come about with no purpose, but on accident, what is the value of saving them? its a question that has been asked many times, and there is an answer, im just prodding to see if newschoolers can figure it out.

The point is to keep a good ecological balance, plus who wants to kill polar bears? I for one would like to see them live, and I'm fairly sure there pretty happy up there. Social Darwinism is barbaric, we have the power to save or destroy what we want, so why not save a dope bear?

woopsy

And another thing, if global warming is causing there deaths because of us I wouldn't count that as social darwinism, I would liken that to me putting someone in a cramped box, turned the heat up and said hey, I know you have no way to escape this because I'm changing but, better adapt or else your going to die. And did you really just say "im just prodding to see if newschoolers can figure it out." Like you have an answer?

Not only are polar bear number on the decline but check this out
[IMGpolar-bears_big.jpg[/IMG]

a grizzly-polar bear hybrid... evolution. This is how the polar bear will adapt.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/05/polar-bears.html

They make the world a more beautiful and fantastic place to live in. Beauty is purpose enough.

“What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts

were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For

whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are

connected.”

- Chief Seattle

It said it wasn't because of the temperature change, but

Why the fuck would you name it a Pizzly? That sounds like a cuddly cat. They should name it a little something more bearish like a polar grizzly or something

you're going to have to try again, you think you're playing a clever mind game, but you lost me.

i can't tell if you're a disrespectful, self centered utilitarian, or if you're just retarded.

It doesn't matter whether the polar bear has a purpose, we gone fucked up their home; we are therefore responsible for the population decrease; thus we also inherit the responsibility of trying to prevent them from unjustly going extinct.

it takes some huge balls to think that everything on this planet is here to provide for us, an if it doesn't provide for us, it doesn't need to be on the planet.

The mainstream nes reports are misleading. There are about 40 different species of polar bears. Several are "at risk" but the habitat where they were/are living is not technically there natural habitat. The ice is not the only problem, to many of them and a lack of food also leads deaths and a decline in the species. Many species of polar bears populations are actually increasing.

false. the polar bear is one species known as Ursus maritimus

please take the time to learn the definition of species

Species:

the major subdivision of a genus or subgenus, regarded as the basic

category of biological classification, composed of related individuals

that resemble one another, are able to breed among themselves, but are

not able to breed with members of another species.

subpopulations then

Of the 19 recognized polar bear subpopulations, 5 are declining, 5 are stable, 2 are increasing, and 7 have insufficient data.[3][4]

why is this so WTF? the polar bears decreasing population has been global warming groups emotional appeal for a looong time.

i was watching the colbert report a little while ago and he had this global warming author on who wrote a book against global warming. it looked interesting and i read it and i am now convinced that global warming isnt really such a big deal and that it doesnt exist like al gore tells it

ya i thought you were some 14 year old who thought it was perfectly OK for polar bears to go extinct because they were worthless, because they won't save themselves, and that we have no responsibility to try and save them.

all of which i (now) think you disagree with such statements.

most people do believe that the humans are on a different level than animals so im sure he isnt to fond of those events. but man ya fuckin with other humans like that is sad to think about

Yes they are a threatened species. But not by number, but by their average weight. Due to short ice seasons, polar bears cannot hunt and build their fat for the winter season. Without this coat, females are unable to reproduce or survive the winter conditions. So the polar bears numbers will decrease as the temperature up north will increase. I praise the US for putting the polar bear on the list.

Alex_murderer, you are truly clueless aren't you. Stop jumping to conclusions based on your point of view. Evolution takes hundreds maybe thousands of years to occur. The reason why the polar bear cannot adapt is because these changes were harsh and very rapid. The perfect example of evolution is our society, from cavemen to the roman empire to the middle ages to the industrial period to today. These changes were progressive, it all happened in a period of over 3000 years. Animals dont just change from one day to another, for example: why dont you grow gills like a fish when you drown? It is survival, yes, but genetics doesn't work that way.

sam, in every single global warming thread you refer to an inconvenient truth. THIS MOVIE IS FULL OF LOTS OF LIES AND IT SUCKS IN GENERAL. look it up on google or something, theres plenty of good sources that will tell you this. i'm not saying this thing about polar bears is true or false since i dont know much about it, but please stop using this movie as evidence.

also, you will get sick of trying to argue about global warming because there are so many threads about so eventually you will stop replying to these threads. i know i'm contradicting myself but i had to this time

yeah a few of my teachers have been talking bout this the polar bears swim to find fish but then they cant find land so they drown and die
