Point A to Point B

In about 2 months time I'm travelling internationally with my own gear for the first time. I'm confused as to how to get it from here to there safely and securely and safely.

What is the best way to pack for a week trip away when taking skis, boots, poles, all of the snow gears plus clothes to live in?! I'm hearing lots about never packing boots in your checked baggage in case of disaster. How do you do it?

Strap your boots together and put the strap over your backpack or through the strap of your carry on. Done it a number of times and have never been hassled about it. Generally you get one carry on bag and a personal item

Yeah, in my experience you can just carry your boots on and put them under the seat in front of you. I even carry my boots in a cloth grocery bag so I can stick some other stuff in there and I wear a small backpack on too. Usually they even say you can have a "purse" or personal item in addition to your carry on.

anybody have experience with shipping skis to your location with something like ups vs. paying an extra checked bag feeat the airport? not sure which way would be cheaper

I called the airline this morning (Jetstar, Aus) to see if taking my carry on bag along with boots in a separate bag was okay and he informed me that you can do that, however, the total weight needs to be under 7kg with all carry on.

He said if it's over that weight, you have to pay buttloads of coin and it becomes checked baggage. Fuck that.

Thanks for the info though y'all, I'm glad theres a solution to not checking them in with the skis and risking them taking a holiday without me elsewhere

save weight put your tennis shoes in the carry on and put your ski boots on when going through the line where they're checking bag weights. And then after just swap out before getting on the plane. I have also had friends wear their boots on an entire flight lol.

I've been able to check my ski and boot bag with the airport and it counts as one checked item. Some airlines might differ, but in my experience it just has to be less than 50 pounds combined. Then you can either check another bag or bring a suit case and carry on onto the plane. Definitely check the airlines policies on all this before you go though.

American Airlines gives me one free bag to check. I put like all of my stuff in that ski bag. It also seems that they never fuck up ski bags because they're an odd size and go to a separate place from the normal bag check. Def carry on boots incase shit goes wrong and your skis are in the wrong country.
