Podcasts are stupid

Why are so many people starting podcasts? All I see of recent podcasts are men bringing on OF girls to talk about geography. Is there a skiing podcast?

Oh great, another Joe Rogan podcast bringing on comedian friends to talk about politics. How exciting.

I haven't listened to anything in the podcasting space since it got absolutely flooded with the same rehashed true-crime stories. Also, those podcasts that bring on OF girls are cringe as fuck. You are basically playing yourself because they are using their platform to promote their pages, even if they look dumb, because tits and ass.

podcasts can be great but conspiracy theorists love using podcasts as real evidence. joe rogan is always saying shit that’s definitely wrong, but none the less he’s really good at what he does.

there’s so many more podcasts to listen to than rogan’s

Yeah nah but I don’t have a problem with Joe Rogans podcast

I listen to a couple more but i usually gravitate to jre at work just cuz i can put it on and not pay full attention. I also really enjoy the extreme guests he has on and listening to their bullshit while snickering in my cubicle.

My main podcast i listen to is sous écoute but who the fuck knows that.

There has been one finance/economics podcast I have been enjoing if they have a interesting guest, outside of that I agree that podcasts are stupid.

Audiobooks are stupid as fuck too. People who say that they listen to someone reading a book to them are hard to take seriously, are you like 5 or what.

Joe Rogan is one of the least listenable podcasts for me honestly. But luckily there are tons of podcasts out there. Music is great but spending my life in a machine sometimes I love ripping through podcasts.

Also to thread, I'll leave one that I think most people could get into. "Stuff You Should Know"

45 min hour long episodes on all kinds of topics. And it's been around for maybe 15 years so there's tons of episodes you can burn through.

Fuck I listen to way too much skiing and other sports-related podcasts. Whenever I want to listen to a podcast that’s not skiing-related, then my default is Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast lol.

and then they always be saying "you don't need to go to college, just look at me!" as if all of us could be podcast hosts

Also, why are 10-20 minute audio-logs (for lack of a better term) called podcasts? It should really be left to shows that are around 40 + minutes long, shouldn't it?

I listen to mostly history and horror podcasts. When you spend 8ish hours a day with your Bluetooth ppe headphones on music alone often doesn't do the job well enough.

I definitely need podcasts at work. Can't listen to music like you said for 8 hours.

What history / horror podcasts do you listen to? I've gone through almost all of hardcore history ones. Needing some more that are non comedian related.

For history I like ones that are specific to nation/region

History of Rome by Marc Duncan is a modern classic and has set the standard.

History of Byzantium by Robin Pierson is essentially the sequel to History of Rome, he's nearing the last days of Roman Constantinople currently.

History of China by Chris Stewart is ongoing and has many many episodes and is pretty dang interesting. Great episodes about the Mongol conquest of China and the subsequent Yuan dynasty helmed by Kublai

History of England was pretty good too, but I definitely lost a lot of interest after they covered the Norman takeover by Billy the Conq. The episodes covering the Viking Age are great tho

The History of Egypt Podcast by Dominic Perry gets in my rotation too, lots of episode like history of China as Egyptians also have oodles and oodles of written history

For horror it's mostly the No Sleep Podcast, 2-4 short fiction pieces per episode, usually good episodes, but some of the more recent stuff gets extremely cringey with including internet millennial/gen z speech

Earlier episodes of Scared to Death are pretty good, the show covers "supposedly true" stories that generally have something actually unexplainable about them, but as the show got more popular the hosts got more annoying and the stories got a lot more of being just creepypasta

I've also listened to a few other fiction horror/sci Fi podcasts, "audio-dramas" is the phrase often used to describe them

The Black Tapes

Tanis

Derelict

Chrysalis

Rabbits

The Last Movie

These sometimes get pretty cheesy, but that comes with the territory of podcasts imo

Chrysalis is a new favorite of mine, it's about a human made AI that wakes up after the earth and all of humanity gets decimated by an alien species and the AI is extremely pissed off and goes ham

You can just put on old Slvsh cup matches and it basically is a podcast or maybe an audiobook is a better description where you get to hear the story play out

Not one to argue with people about their beliefs but you are just wrong. You just haven't found the good ones yet.

I really dig the why files. As a cat operator working 8 hour overnight shifts in a machine, sometimes hearing someone talk to me is better than me talking to myself.

Edit: This really went from "podcasts are stupid" to "share your favourite podcast." Not really sorry for the thread hijack OP

Honestly its a learning experience I don’t really listen to podcasts but I might now

Podcasts suck unless they're on a specific topic. The ones where its just a bunch of dudes pretending to be funny or intellectual are stupid. When I was grooming I'd listen to a ton, primarily Behind the Bastards (history), Meat Eater (hunting), and CBRN Art (guns), as well as a bunch of aviation related ones. Getting back into them now, as I'm commuting 2.5hrs/day for school.

Good for you and congrats I think you might have been the first person to learn something on NS.

You may have already listened because its one of the most popular podcasts but you should check out season 2 of Serial which covers the Bowe Berghdal story in Afghanistan when he walked off his post. Super interesting and very different than normal Serial/crime pods.

The word podcast is a combination of iPod and Broadcast, both of which are obsolete at this point.

There are so many good podcasts out there. You just need to loook for something that fits your interests.

i drive a lot so i listen to a shit ton of pods

He stopped making these years ago though, right? Used to listen to every episode really enjoyable.

Two Planker now fills that spot.

My go to sleep pods, which I leave on all night, are just straight war stuff. For some reason I find it more relaxing than anything else.

I like listening to Andrew Huberman talk about neuroscience because it makes me feel like a smart guy working a dumb guy job.

The two planker episode with Ankilla is the most interesting thing I have listened to in my life

Much like Stuff You Should Know it covered every imaginable topic under the sun. The part where he got 51/50d while doing a coffee enema was my favorite part

I try and pay attention but it's so far over my peanut brain. But he's excellent or should i say eggselent

PERUN

and then like, Irregular warfare or War on the Rocks

Perun has a little bit of humor but be warned, they are all very dry and academic.

But cool if you like geopolitical things

As far as more easy listening goes, Darknet Diaries (cyber security guy brings in excons, ex-analysts, or pen testers for cyber-related crime stories.) and Radio Lab (General science, tech, and culture stories, expertly narrated, sound designed and researched. It's sort of like Stuff You Should No but like 100 times better. BUT ONLY LISTEN TO THE OLD EPISODES. The new hosts fucking suck and it's all woke shit now). If the episode is not hosted by Jad and Robert, don't listen to it. Radiolab is genuinely one of the most cool things I've come across. Listened to it for 17 hours straight once on a solo drive from the yoop to vermont.
