PM warns of climate 'catastrophe'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8313672.stm

Newschoolers,

Here is an article talking about the urgency of climate change, thought you guys would enjoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Key quotes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"The costs of failing to tackle the issue would be greater than the impact of both world wars and the Great Depression combined, the prime minister said."

"The world would face more conflict fuelled by climate-induced migration if a deal was not agreed, he added. "

"Mr Brown said: "If we do not reach a deal at this time, let us be in no doubt: once the damage from unchecked emissions growth is done, no retrospective global agreement, in some future period, can undo that choice."

the point/result they're trying to prove/achieve in this whole climate crisis is good, but i have an intense aversion of ppl who exaggerate things to prove their point...
Just put things like they are, don't exaggerate or you'll make a fool out of yourself and the cause you're working for...

^to bad climate change is going to affect the poorest parts of the world first and most severely. So by the time the people doing the damage get hit by their own karma the rest of the world will have already gone to shit because of them (us)

typical knee-jerk response. Blown WAYYYY out of proportion. What does the government think will work? Throwing exorbitant amounts of money at it, obviously. Shit doesn't work, government is incompetent with any amount of money. Climate reform will be the guise they assume to encroach on our civil liberties. Soon, you'll be told what car you have to drive, what fuel you must use, which lightbulbs to use, at what hours you can put the temp in your home up to, the size TV you purchase(already happening in Cali.) You watch.

maybe this is a good thing. After this great catastrophe the world population will be much smaller and the poeple that survive will be wilderness people that can hunt and fend for themselves. They will create micro communities and life will be better. Bring on the global catastrophe!!

What the great majority of people don't seem to realize is that the earth goes through cooling and heating phases. Saying 'its hotter now than it was 20 years ago' does not make much of a difference in atmospheric sciences.

You have to look at the larger trends - thousands of years, not decades. I'm not saying that global warming is not happening, or that it is not a problem, but the media is really exaggerating the human element. If the earth's climate cycle says its time for another ice age, then its time. No amount of tree-hugging or hybrid Priuses (Priusi?) is going to change that.

no. what the great majority of people don't seem to realize is how serious this shit actually is. Have you even looked at the larger trends? temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration correlate almost perfectly.

the media is not exaggerating the human element. According to the earths climate cycle we should have already begun another ice age. Your right, no amount of tree hugging or hyrid prius driving is going to change that, but pumping billions of metric tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere certainly does.

Global warming is already causing serious problems. it needs to be addressed right away by not just our governments but more importantly by everyone who is contributing to it.

I'm sorry that sounds preachy but its true.

and to the retard who said global warming is just another way the government is going to try to control the people. Do you really think our governments WANT to tell us what cars to drive or lightbulbs to use? of course not! If a government actually has to go to that length its only because its own citizens are too stupid to realize that they are fucking everything up for the rest of the world.

I heartily disagree with you there. The inherent vice of power is that you always want more. This is especially true with governments that grow too large for their own good. In that sense, YES, governments, especially our own, want to control what we do. They more they control, the more we "NEED" them to survive, and that translates to a permanent voter base that is forced to reelect the same schmoes because they need them to continue providing for them. If you ask me, that is about as unAmerican as anything. The United States was founded on the principle of limited government, and when government was necessary, it was designed to elevate the power of the STATE to rise above the power of the Federal government. I am convinced that anything the government does is uneccessary and ALWAYS way too costly and way too ineffective. Social security, medicaid, large public works projects, you name it. All of these kinds of programs are corrupt, bloated, ineffective, and on the verge of bankruptcy. Why? Because the government got involved.

This kind of shit allows governments to use the rosy crusade of "Progressivism" to steadily infringe on our civil liberties. You think progressivism is a good thing, but really, it is just further encroachment on our civil liberties. Prohibition was part of the progressive movement, and look how that turned out. Federal government got involved where it didn't belong and, BIG SURPRISE, criminals got filthy rich off illegal alcohol sales instead of good, law abiding Americans making money. All because the federal government (and the state governments, today especially (Massachusetts)) is totally and completely inept.

It is the same shit with climate legislation. It is a pet "Progressive" cause that sounds noble, and may be noble, but it will result in large scale regulation of the private sector and of the private lives of all Americans. These progressive causes start out as noble, good ideas, but they all fall to the natural flow of politics. All too often, these kids of things end up being dictated wholly by unions and other special interests, so Americans always get screwed because, instead of catering to the people, the government kowtows to the unions and in this case, the whackjob enviromentalists on the FAR left, to ensure they secure the incredibly powerful voting blocs each of these ensure in the next election. It's simple politics, and it makes me sick. So, when the suits come to your house to inspect it's energy efficiency and slam a carbon tax on big businesses and on small families who consume "too much" energy, don't come back here crying about injustice because you, my friend, ate this shit up when it began.

post script:

It is most definitely NOT the job of the government to tell you how to live and what to buy. That flies in the face of the common rights of mankind. The constitution was written to guarantee that that wouldn't happen. Alas, not to many presidents these days have been too keen on preserving that uniquely American tradition.

do you really want to base your data solely on Al Gore's evidence taken from the IPCC that doesn't even encompass all scientists that agree?
watch The Great Global Warming Swindle.
the debate isn't over, you have to look at both sides. Now I'm not saying that Global Warming is good or bad, just the media portraying it as CATASTROPHE, not even a crises anymore... really?
Yes we should recycle, and reduce our dependance on limited resources, but don't always believe everything the media throws at you.

maybe id believe half the global warming bullshit if everyone didnt have to lie about it to make us think its a big deal.

I won't say anything about global warming, but flyingspoon is right. We definitely need to stop using so much damn plastic, I don't want my seafood dinner to have bits of shampoo bottle in it.

So let me get this strait. Your saying your worried that instead of catering to the people, our government will be kowtowing to the whackjob environmentalists on the FAR LEFT? To ensure it secures the THEIR VOTES??? Well to my understanding, in the relative scheme of things, wackjob far left environmentalists have a slightly more than negligible amount of voting influence, have no unions, and compared to the big guys (oil industry) have no money to hire lobbyists. thus rendering your argument ungrounded.

But where could all this environmentalist influence possibly be coming from then? How could they possibly be holding so much power that you, the average citizen, is worried about the government catering to them rather than him?

wait. I think I know. Maybe its because their logic is based on SCIENCE. And basically the science is saying, is if we don't stop pumping out the enormous amounts of CO2 we currently are, the earth will continue to rapidly warm and EVERYTHING GETS FUCKED.

The only reason there is even a debate over this is because certain parties representing fossil fuel interests have deliberately fostered a sense of confusion around the issue for decades.

It sounds like a bit like a conspiracy but think about it. If you are an oil company, making billions of dollars a year, you sure as hell are going to invest enormous amounts of money in making people think your product isn't royally fucking up the earth. even if it is. THESE are the interest groups your should be afraid of. not the wackjob environmentalists. THESE are the groups with the MONEY and MOTIVE to influence the government. And you. (ahem pharmaceuticals)

look at the situation logically. i'll break it down for you.

1. The earth is warming. this is in indisputable.

2.Carbon dioxide is a green house gas, meaning it absorbs some of the infrared radiation(heat) leaving the earth, and reemits it back. thus warming the earth. This is too is indisputable.

3. Humans emit over 6 billion Tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. also indisputable.

that is a SHITLOAD of CO2. Of course we are causing the earth to warm! We are pumping out huge amounts of gas that trap heat for crists sake!

not to mention to vast majority of climatologists, people who study this for a living, agree that the earth is warming, due to the huge quantities of greenhouse gases that humans emit.

I'm guessing you've taken an economics class. Meaning you know what the tragedy of the commons is. Well thats what our atmosphere is, a commons. That is why we need government to regulate it.

so no, I won't come back crying when the suits come to my door trying to tax me for my energy bill. I'll be laughing at my crying neighbor who's head is stuck so far up his ass that he can't even see that his enormous energy bill is having an extremely negative impact on the earth and all its inhabitants.

and sorry if some of that came across as huffy this is just something i feel deeply about

I've actually taken meteorology classes and have a pretty good idea of what all this nonsense is. Instead I'm going to say this, hopefully the next climate shift is an ice age, then we can ski more!

The one thing I learned from class today: Environmentalists always have an incentive to exaggerate.
Gotta be able to tell the difference.

and no the graph is not from the IPCC although im sure they have one like it. And I havn't seen al gores movie in years. I did not write that because i believe everything the media throws at me. my opinion is based off the vast scientific body of knowledge pointing towards anthropogenic climate change. this is not a catastrophe now but if things continue the way they are going it certainly will be. not just for people but for everything. this shit is dead serious

There is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are fucked. Difference. Difference. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We’ve been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we’ve only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we’re a threat? That somehow we’re gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that’s just a-floatin’ around the sun?

The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed, and if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new pardigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice towards plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?” Plastic…asshole

I love you George Carlin, you were the smartest man

The IPCC is a fucking joke, it's run by the UN. That should tell you something. The consensus is that the IPCC is ENTIRELY political. No wonder their shit can be so skewed. If you thought of looking at the other side of the issue, you would see that there are over 700 "scientists" (experts, climatologists, what have you) who have signed on to the idea that anthropogenic climate change is not only false, but GROSSLY exaggerated, with more added to the cause every day. The issue has ceased to be scientific. It has taken on the characteristics of a religion, where those who dare to subscribe to a different belief are accused of heresey and are politically and publicly burnt at the stake for their beliefs. That is NOT what science is. Science is about constant debate, about seeking true reason, not about petty political biases to ensure more goverment money finds its way to universities and other climate-based professions. This matter has become entirely political, it's only masked by the thin veil of "science" and "progress." You can even debate this topic at all because self-righteous nuts like you automatically jump down our throats and accuse us of willfully and directly sentencing this planet to death. I have always been convinced, and will remain convinced, that this is a political cause. But, because of the mass hysteria this has invoked, the government will be able to push its agenda and bleed the citizenry dry with climate-based taxation, will stymie the freemarket with a whole bunch of shitty hybrids and other cars that people DO NOT WANT TO BUY (trust me, just look at sales data for hybrids. No one is making any money on them, but automobile companies in the US are being strong-armed by the government to keep producing them at major losses to the company.) The feds will be able to use this climate-change racket to justify the elimination of any semblence of choice in the free market by slamming huge taxes on the companies that refuse to play along, while at the same time, subsidizing production for those companies that do play along. This is not how the private sector works, and it's going to fuck everything up. Pretty soon we will all be required to buy energy efficient lightbulbs, and those of us that don't buy and drive hybrids will be turned in to our local government ss brigades for questioning and re-education. You can go ahead and blindly follow a cause and take all information at face value. I'd rather fight to ensure that we are afforded our constitutional and natural rights. You should try looking below the surface on the issue instead of following the old party line. I don't want to be told what I can and can't buy, it isn't the job of the government to tell us how to live.
