Please help me, Timberline

Greetings

So I'm in my junior year at highschool and my school has us do an an annual science project and present it. This year I am trying to take snow samples from the Palmer snowfield. I was looking at the webcams on the Timberline site and it looks like there are tracks from snow going machines up to Palmer. If anyone knows anyone in Mountain ops and could put in a good word for me, I would really appreciate it. I would love to get a ride up on a sled or..?

Thanks guys, it means a lot.

Why not just walk up there? Really no big deal especially if you are still a teenager. Park in the upper lot and it'll probably take you about an hour or hour and 1/2 to make it to Palmer, add an hour if you are walking to the top.

Contact them directly and professionally, not through this skii forum

I am not sure how to contact mtn opps specifically...I tried calling them but the person said they do scenic cat rides in January and on, but for now all they are doing is maintenance runs. I am planning on heading up there tomorrow so I will probably just trundle down to the building and see if I can work something out.

Tomorrow will be a great day for a hike. Just go for it if you can't arrange a ride. I'm sure someone will give you a lift if they can but I wouldn't be surprised if the staff aren't allowed to because of liability etc.

What are you expecting to find in the samples? I can assure there won't be much of anything, especially anything detectable with high school chemistry equipment

Not sure if you thought of this yet or not but there is so much salt in that snow I'm sure it would effect any type of scientific study.

I am testing salinity at various depths of a core sample

Yeah thats what I assume. I am walking up tomorrow via snowshoe I think. I was planning on skinning but I think there the tides are just a touch low around the lodge...

Here's a novel idea... walk up the hill, you idiot.

Thanks for the novel idea.

I was just thinking I would ask so I wouldn't have to pick and choose what sampling equipment to take up with me.

Or quit being a pussy and carry all of it.

how did u not know this thread was gonna get you roasted

There are some good people left in this world, but I can appreciate your hindsight and obvious remark.

This project looks awesome and will be a blast. All you have to do is contact the right people and say that you are a student. The student card will open up just about any door.
