Planning a trip to Lake Tahoe in December

Hey guys- just wanted a little imput- for my 21st birthday my mother is taking me to lake tahoe (or any other spot, but i picked there to go ski!) and wanted your guys imput on where would be the best place to stay. Im talking in terms of not TOO expensive, but like not disgusting and cheap, and also, close to where SOMETHING cool might be going on at night, as i will finally be 21! And one more thing- WHERE TO SKI!! squaw one day obviously, but where else for a good pipe? Im going to be there december 26-30th, so any suggestions are cool, also if any of you locals want to ski with me (COURTNEY!).. i gotta get everything booked this weekend.. thanks!

i dont think tahoe gets very good untill later on in the season but what do i know im just an east coaster. ive only been there in the summer

 
Its a gamble in december. But it can be great. Squaw is great, but if you are worried about money that is not the place. Alpine meadows is very close to squaw,and not nearlly as expensive. It has some great big mountain terrain. Northstar is the place for park a 1/4 of the mountain is park. and it agin is cheaper than squawllywood.

 
Go to alpine too, it's right down the road from Squaw. Hopefully they will have their parks up by christmas, even if they don't there should be some killer snow by then so you can ski steeps at both those places. Don't go to flat star it sucks. As for where to stay, there are plenty of hoteles and resort condo stuff like that around. You might look into a place in Tahoe city if you want nightlife, Maybe even Nevada because they have the casinos. If you are in the area I would also recommend Sugar Bowl. It's on Donner Pass about thirty minutes outside of Tahoe City and well worth the drive in my opinion, especially if Squaw and Alpne are crowded as they usually are during winter break. Have fun!

^not in December it doesn't. They don't get enough snow to start building unitl at least January.

like the other people said, if you go to squaw for a day you should check out alpine. i will be there over break and i would love to meet up with another girl to ski with! i have a pass at heavenly also if you plan to go up there at all.

hmmmm places to stay? everything in tahoe is pretty pricey. i would look around at the motels around the casinos. there are a lot of little ones that don't cost to much and then you could go out to the clubs and casinos at night.. just a thought.

 
south shore is your best bet for nightlife, and i agree with whoever said to check out sugar bowl. its a bit pricey, (or was last year at least) but it has great terrain... kind of like a mini squaw. and alpine is also really quality. if youre willing to do little 10-15 min hikes you can get into some awesome stuff that stays more or less untouched for days after a storm, and if youre only 21, you can get a decent young adult ticket rate. no promises on park that early though, and the pipe most likley wont be worth it there if its even up at all. its also less crowded than squaw, and there will be far fewer japanese tourists in neon one peicers.

sugarbowl's only $40 a day if you're 18-22. I worked there for a bit last year and it's pretty dope for big mountain shit, you never know about the park there-could be good, could be shit, usually decent. Had a 50ft kicker last year that was nice and smoove...most snow in tahoe next to kirkwood tho. there's usually one big early season storm right around xmas. seems like ever year about the 15th to the 20th of december, one rolls in and just dumps for days like 3-10ft-i know it's a big range. if u want the best skiing, stay in the truckee area because of all the options, but u can also hook up fat deals at northstar cuz they have tons of condos there and deals with passes and shit-but the mtn sucks other than the park which may not great that early-good rails tho

yes, like someone else said, southsore is where you'll find nightlife, norhshore is pretty dead at night, with the exception of the few bars we have. i would for sure ski a day at alpine, and squaw obviously, depending on how much snow we have by then, i wold avoid northstar, mountain is way flatt, and if you're only going there to use the park (wich may not be anything spectacular by that point) i'd shell out the money and go to squaw or alpine. no matter what, you'll have fun here, i guarantee it, in tahoe you can't go wrong. let me know the dates you're comming up, and i'll try to meet up with you.

^ depends on the snowfall by then. there's no telling what we'll have by then. not enough snow=no park. they'll probably have somehting up by then, but the later it gets, the better the parks are.

the only place you need to look in to is THE BLOCK...thats MFM's hotel, go there and live like a rock star for cheap!

and possably hang if MFM himself.

thanks guys i am actually going to be going to mazatlan now cause my mom doesnt ski and i think she'd have more fun at the beach.. plus with the snow sucking as bad as it does in washington in december, i think mazatlan and waves will be better!

very simple..goto squaw..the best of everything, dont sell yourself short becuase you want to save a few dollars. IF you want a cheap but decent place to stay..choose the best western in truckee.

 
^^Haha, the best western in Truckee...My friends and I trashed that place. We can't go back there, they have our names on a list.

Aye my 21st is this year in December too! We should throw double bday bashes. Except mine is on New Years eve so everyone is partying anyways. I gotta gamble for sure.
