So last Friday at the Reno Air Races a plane crashed into the people watching. So far their have been 12 confirmed deaths, but their are 30 unidentified bodies at least which need to be identified before they can be confirmed. Also there are way more hurt. The plane was heavily modified, and the pilot might have blacked out, but their is no positive cause yet. This might be the last air races in rneo (it's been going on for over 50 years) so thats sad. But just look at this video and imagine what it was like for the people there.

 
Old news. Highly unlikely the pilot blacked out as he was one of the best stunt pilots out there. Plus it was confirmed from the footage that a tail trim piece was seen falling off before the plane went out of control.

Still a pretty nasty crash and a tragedy for all those involved, and the destruction of a beautiful plane.
 
Old news. Pilot didnt black out because he was able to get a mayday out seconds before the plane went down. Plus it was confirmed from the footage that a tail trim piece was seen falling off before the plane went out of control.

It happened less than a week ago, and its a new video. There are now picture of the plane before it hit and the pilot cant be seen in the plane which is leading the investigators to belive he was blacked out. Im just relaying information i've gotten from the paper and news, because i live in Reno. I cant say how accurate it is
 
I hate how people dismiss something after a week or so. With every disaster people talk about it for a week and then they loose interest and dont care anymore.

The pilot did not black out. Evidence has been found that a piece of the aircrafts tail Known as the "Elevator trim tab" fell off the aircraft during flight. This piece keeps the plane stable and when it came loose the tail kicked the plane around and was unable to regain control.
 
This was a terrible day for aviation. Im a technical aviation major and I brought it up in my aerodynamics class the other day with my professor. He said this is a really complicated crash to figure out. It wasn't the pilot blacking out, thats for sure. It most likely has something to do with the trim tab like previously stated. The trim tab is attached to the elevator which controls vertical movement on an airplane. Basically what it is used for is to help you stabilize your self in flight so your not constantly fighting the airplane to keep it level. My professor and I came to the conclusion that he most likely had the trim tap pitched nose up, which means that it was set in position to make sure the airplane had a positive rate of climb. In that case if it were to fall off then the nose of the airplane would pitch even more up. So the question is why did it all of a sudden dive bomb into the ground? It could of been the pilot over correcting himself for the sudden pitch up, but the pilot was very skilled so that is once again very unlikely.
Basically we came to the conclusion that the reason for the crash was probably due to the modifications the pilot and his crew made to the aircraft. They wanted to go for speed so they cut the wing span in HALF. Which IMO is fucking crazy, makes the airplane so much more unstable and is ruining such a beautiful machine. The p-51 Mustang is my dream plane. Its basically a prop plane with the speeds and maneuverability of a jet.

At this point, this is all speculation....however I think it is highly likely that the pilot DID blackout. Not from one thing or another, but from a combination of factors (like almost any crash). 5 feet chopped off the wings, ya that's not really uncommon.

I think it went down like this based on what the pilots that were there told me:

Trim tab comes off at high speed while pulling about 2-3 G's and the plane started to oscillate from the drastic change in elevator stability. The pilot recognized it, says he's out, and pulls up to gain altitude. The problem is that he was at high speed and he went from 2-3 G's to 11 G's almost instantly (the data from the plane shows that). That kind of rapid change in pressure can put you to sleep in about 1-2 seconds regardless of who you are. Very likely he GLOCs for an unknown amount of time and the plane banks from the nose high condition all the way to the ground.
 
that and the dude was like 80 years old or something retarded. It like when an old person steps on the gas instead of the brake....whatever happened RIP. I don't know if its true or not but I heard that the pilot ended up crashing the plane where his family was sitting. thats pretty crazy
 
Just because you heard about it someplace other than NS, before you heard about it on NS, does not make it old news.
 
the sound when the plane hits the ground is horrifying. Seeing videos like this also makes me realize that only 11 deaths coming from it...isn't that bad when you think of what it could have been. Still awful and I'm not discounting those deaths, but having a plane plow into a crowd at hundreds of miles per hour and not killing more is incredible.

just thinking about the way they sound gives me goosebumps...how crazy it must have been being 22-25 years old flying over europe blowin shit up in one of these....aahhhhhh why wasn't i born 60 years earlier

wasnt there another accident too where a few guys died like the same day, or a day later?
 
A lady that my mother works with her whole family except her attended the event. Unfortunately, Her husband, mother, father, and brother in law all were seriously injured. 3/4 of the them were completely paralyzed from the waist down And amputation of all of their legs had to be done. He mother on the other hand wasn't so lucky, earlier this week she was confirmed as the 11th victim dead.
Its so terrible this tragedy had to happen, and even worse that this happened to the nicest family. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family especially my mothers colleague.

I was looking at video of this constantly, I don't know why. Sort of a morbid obsession I guess but this one up close just made me sick. Steady fucking camerawork though...
 
Daily planet did a thing on this the other day, and it is VERY likely that the pilot blacked out, but that that was not the cause on the crash. The cause is thought to be a trim tab coming off, which sent the plane into a steep climb, causing the pilot to black out.

It's times like these that I fucking HATE technology. Same with the Indiana fair stage collapse video..... It makes me sick to watch these videos and yet somehow I still end up watching them. Disgusting.
 
The watching it on film part..... EVERYTHING is on film these days.... which is good and bad.... in this case bad.
 
The plane oscillated after that fell of, because static stability was lost at that orientation. It wouldn't "send the plane into a steep climb", the pilot likely pulled up since he lost control and was leaving the race. With half the elevator gone it probably felt a lot different than normal, possibly explaining why he pulled 11 G's.

By the way, your sentence is a little confusing. You say blacking out isn't the cause, but also that it is the cause, haha. I don't think I know anyone who can take an instant 11 G onset.
