Haha. Your memory is way too good man.
Borat turned out to be a lot smarter than I thought it would be. If you think about it it wasn't a funny movie, it was an exposition of how pathetic the American social consciousness had become. Borat without the meta-plot of cultural identity extraction, would be pointless an silly. Whether the perception of this plot line was conscious or not, it is the reason why people think it was so good. Its like being able to recognize a powerful piece of art, but not understanding why its engaging your emotions.
Pirates on the other hand is simply stupid. The first movie was good. Just simple, entertaining, Hollywood junk food, but nothing to be critical of. The second film however was pure rubbish. There were 3 billion subplots and none of them made any progress; it was just a giant pile of confusion. It was the only movie I've ever felt compelled to walk out of because it was so obvious that they made the movie as a $14 interlude between 1 and 3. They had no plot, terrible screenplay, and worse acting that production covered up with special effects and pretty faces.
As for Pirates 3, cant you just feel them straining desperately for a plot? I mean come on, monsters of the deep allying with the British Royal Navy to destroy the world of Piracy...are you serious? The dumbest part is that we're supposed to sympathize with Johny Depp as the protagonist, which has totally destroyed his character as the promiscuous, pseudo-schizophrenic imp, which was a much more interesting character.
I just think its really dumb thats all. I'm sure the graphics will be great, and I'm sure most people will enjoy the illusion of witty dialouge, but for me, i just cant figure out why i should care about these characters or their bizzare battle for the fate of...what are they fighting for again.
