Pipe @ the 2014 Olympic Games

Yeah, I hate when little kids get stoked on the sport we all love and get into it!

Also what was bad about the 2010 Olympics snowboard pipe contest? Other than Davis and KP being injured. Shaun laid down a few sick runs.

Its not official yet. All thats been confirmed is that FIS freestyle will be officially submitting a request to FIS to include halfpipe in the Olympics. FIS still needs to accept the proposal (which will happen, or not, in April). If FIS accepts its then FIS will take the application to the IOC who will need to approve the application from FIS.
Personally I'd be f**king stocked to see halfpipe skiing shown to the world on Olympic stage.
By the way, the above info is according to Trennon Paynter. Seeing as he's the Canadian halfpipe coach I'm assuming his info is legit.

What I've heard is slightly different...that a few countries within FIS Freestyle are trying to get support to put it forward to FIS Congress. At the very least, getting it voted on at FIS Congress (though not all countries who have freestyle skiing are really keen). The word is that IOC is pressuring FIS to get it done as they want it for sure so countries may not want to offend the IOC (for all sorts of political reasons). However, I've also heard that IOC wants slopestyle too as they see it as more popular in Europe and want to have both snowboard and ski slopestyle. No matter what opinions might be, it is great TV so you can see why they'd want it. Plus more European skiers slay slopestyle than halfpipe and they see it as having more broad appeal (as so few countries/ski hills have halfpipes). So does anyone know if it is on the FIS Freestyle skiing will put it forward? Or if Snowboarding is putting slopestyle forward to FIS Congress?

Are any of you people that are complaining actually fucking serious? Even if they had rules that we didn't like, who cares; would you honestly rather not have a freeskiing event in the olympics over having some tedious rules?

Bottom line is that we will still have all of the things that we have now that make skiing so awesome (Newschoolers, X games, Dew Tour, the same dope ass pros, working with the same dope ass producers, making new dope ass movies every year). This would give our pros the long overdue chance to wear some gold around their neck while their anthem played, and I really see no possible way that anybody from this site can see this as a bad thing.

I would be incredibly happy to see it pass. Snowboarding half pipe has become a common point of discussion during the Olympics for all sorts of people. If people saw the kind of stuff skiers are doing, it would blow them away (a lot of people not exposed to the sport don't even realize a lot of pros can ride park switch almost as well as they can forwards).

I also think it would have a pretty awesome affect on the way our riders train. X-games is sick, but it doesn't compare to having the chance to represent you country in front of the whole world at the Olympics. It's an ancient event, and the pride that comes with an Olympic medal is something I don't think can be likened to anything else in the world.

i completely agree. and while exposure for the sport is nice, to make it mainstream could be catastrophic. terrain parks could be more overcrowded than they already are. i would much rather see skier judges as well, so that scores would be fair.

pipe going to the olympics i am completely fine with, but in no benificial way would the newschool ski industry be affected by having slopestyle in the olympics. Freesking in its self pretty much says it all. There are far too many differnt aproaches one may take on a slopestyle course, and i wouldnt say one is better than the other. Can you seriously see an olympic judge giving Henrik Harlaut a good score while he's wearing a tall tee down to his knees? My final thought on freesking in the olympics is; Pipe is good, Slope is bad becasue it would remove creativity from the sport a make all the skiers do generic tricks for higher scores.

I just attended a meeting on thursday about half pipe and 2014 and Canada's point on it. They are having a meeting with FIS sometime in April and they are almost 100% sure that FIS will accept half pipe as a need to become an Olympic sport. Then FIS has to come up with an arguement to present to the IOC as to what Half pipe skiing will bring to the table and why it should be in. The chances of the IOC accepting half pipe skiing is pretty likely as Freestyle skiing has had the highest attendance and views of many of the Olympic sports and Sochi will already have the venue (snowboard pipe).

So there.
