Pipe Help

Yo, so I have skied pipe before, but never really fully gotten out of the pipe more than a foot. Today at Loon, I was riding the superpipe and just hiking it a ton trying to get better, because I was so pumped on seeing the pros getting really high out and i wanted to get kinda high out. I ended up getting out decently high, but i still need help so I don't look shitty doing it. Got some 5's but they were probably not very good and some alley-oop 1's which were maddd fun. So here are my issues as of now for pipe, help me if you can:

1. Not Boosting High Enough- today I wasn't going super fast as Loon doesn't really have an inrun at all to get speed, but if I haul ass will that make it a lot easier to boost high?

2. Trouble Popping "Up"- I can pop on jumps and stuff, but I am confused on it in the pipe... How do I pop up, rather than forward (casing) or backward (landing way too far in)

3. Position- Just want to clarify this, but I have heard a lot that I should stand tall as i go up the wall, especially in the tranny.

4. Fear- I get up a few feet, and I am like "Shit, what if I case this or fall way far into the pipe?" Thats probably because today the first time I actually got legit air on the first hit, I cased the shit out of it and flipped back into the pipe, leaving a ski chilling on the deck. How do I just get high and not case, and get over the fear of casing? I know you will tell me to sack up, but I can sack up on jumps, and I feel like I am sacking up in the pipe somewhat, but I still am just scarred of casing that shit.

Help me out if you can, I should be going back tomorrow so I will try out what you tell me.

And please only post if you can actually boost out of the pipe consistently, I thought I could teach myself how to do it, but I really think the only way to give good advice is if you can actually stomp shit every time.

Thanks

I have no actual help, but go out and buy yellow stuff, and a pair of dumonts and be like simon dumont but spin left too.

pop just like you would a normal jump. try to keep your hands over the deck in the pipe while in midair and you wont case it. as for fear, pipe is freaky at first but just do it more and more and you will be comfortable with it

oh sick advice, maybe i should do what you probably do and buy all the shit that makes me look good when i am not ksiing, just chillin on the lift, then not be able to back up my shit?

yeah thats what the cool kids do, buy shit to look like a pro, then suck!!

Did you not catch the I HAVE NO ACTUAL ADVICE! It's called sarcasm dude. Calm down. It was suppose to be a joke post but you need to get off your concided seat and calm down. And no I don't but shit just to look pro I just buy shit thats comfertable and warm. So shut up before you try to talk shit.

I hiked the pipe a lot today as well. pipes so much fun!

Ill try and help but i am a snowboarder so this info may not hold true to skiing.

As far as trying to get higher out... If you S pipe dosent have much of an in run, Try riding on the deck parallel to the wall you want to drop in on when you feel you have a sufficient amount of speed hope, turn your body so you can ride down the pipe smoothly. This method it nice cus you dont need to hike all the way up to the setup area, and i think you get more speed this way.

Airing out... At first it is hard to find that smooth point between popping to much and not popping enough. I usually just ride off and not even pop because my local pipe is pretty fucking vert, it really depends on the pipe, and remember that your pipe can change tuns in a few days so allways do a mellow warm up run to feel it out.

For the fear of crashing... You cant think about it. It will mess you up. Like other people say about hitting new features, imagine your self stomping it, and while riding up to it be like im going to dominate you and not be dominated. I allso find that music helps me a lot in the pipe.

One helpfull tip, (may not refer to skiing, but it dos to snowboarding) When you are carving up the wall at an angle, you hold your edge tell about 3 feet from the lip, than at that point switch to a flat base or to your edge that faces down hill this will help keep you from sliding out or landing on the deck.

Thats all you need to no to ride pipe.

I try to get alot of speed on the in run and carry as much of it into the first hit as possible when dropping into the pipe. I rail my skis (putting them on edge) and arcring them into the first hit (sharpen your skis) and then pop like a hit of the top of the wall...just keep working on it you will get higher and higher...

I just started skiing pipe this year, because I now go to school near a mountain that has one, so I'm not that good, but I can go out about 2-3 feet sometimes, mostly on the quarterpipe. Speed is really important, and you really have to pump the tranny when you land to hold your speed, also, don't just go straight off the wall, hit it at a little bit of an angle. As for fear, just visualize yourself stomping the trick and make sure you are really focussed on it, because then fear won't even enter your mind. Just be in the zone, music would probably help you focus, even though I never ski with it.

just go a lil faster, pump hard in the tranny and flats. dont stand tall in the tranny. crouch a lil, keep your hands in front, and stand taller towards the top getting ready to pop a little.

if a pipe is good you can ride out of the wall more than pop out of it.

1.drop in

2.catch the tranny as high as possible

3.push down on your feet at the top of the tranny, this will start your momentum change to the next wall and help keep your speed, ie: pumping

4.ride both your uphill edges across, think one big smooth carve

5.at the bottom of the tranny going out push down on your feet to get your speed going up

6.keep your edging and pump going until you air out

7.look back to where you are going to land and your body will follow

8.stay forward and try to have your skis land as close to parallel with the vert on the pipe as possible

9.repeat 2-8

i SUCK at pipe but i was once told to think of every hit as a quarter pipe, for somereason that sounds like it would help.

I'll try to answer some of your questions...

1 -> practice, and push on the transition, and practice more.... if you travel more (i.e. change your angle more towards the bottom) you will also go faster. Also make sure you are moving in a zig-zag-motion through the pipe (straight lines) and not in S-curves (basically from a top view you want your line to look like this: /\/\/\/\ and not like ~~). Your problem might also be the way you drop in. Look at videos of Tanner or Dumont dropping in... you try to stay somewhat parallel to the coping as you ollie into the pipe and then you carve in to generate speed...

2 -> always keep your eyes on the coping... you're not supposed to pop out of the pipe but push out of it... sometimes looking at the sky as you come out helps, then immediately focus on the coping again.. if the pipe is slushy it's easy to push out and boost way high.... but if the pipe is icy it's more difficult, you have to make yourself as light as possible and gently push out without skidding...

3 -> just strong athletic position, and keep your knees strong, as in: push.

4 -> if you keep your eyes on the coping at all times you will not case. a grab will also make you more stable and keep your mind busy... And fear is there for a reason, practice will make you better and make the fear go away.

pipe just takes a shitload of practice.

practice, practice, practice..

hey i went to loon this weekend and i saw someone hike to the top of quarterpipe and dropin, he got about 3-4 feet out, when before he only got out about 1/2 foot.
