well the girlfriend just bought some 166 foils today - first impressions are pretty good.. love the trend towards fat twins. the 170+ have an 86 waist and the 166 has an 83 waist..

here are some pics of the new 'spaceframe' and some size pics to compare to a fujative and seth pistol - as you can see it is somewhere in between the two. still dunno if it's a wood core, but the edges look nice and beefy.

will try to take 'em for a spin and post a more detailed review...

I have yet to determine what, aside from the dimensions, makes these any better than old 1080s.

love the bullshit about 'core' companies... personally, i don't know anyone who runs any ski companies, so it don't make any difference to me whose pockets i fill. i'll get whatever is cheapest/works best for me... keep deluding yourself that armada or ninthward or whoever cares more about you than salomon - they all just want your cash.

the skis are pretty damn good. edges look beefier than my k2s, and they are light as fuck and seem to have good stiffness underfoot and flex at the tips/tails. overall looks like a good ski and pretty much a perfect mix of backcountry and park, size-wise. thumbs up.

(doing the season in la plagne, france which is not far from the salomon HQ in annecy hence the ski is available in shops already..)

^^^Nope, the 1080 Spaceframe has a 80mm middle, and the Pocket Rocket has a 90mm. The 1080 model before the Spaceframe was like 76mm I believe.

Yeah not a teneighty with a makeover as the size/shape is completely different, it's lighter, etc. look at the tips and tails as well totally different shape.

and yeah those are look race bindings on 'em, although they are identical to the pivot jib (i.e. trouble maker binding) but with a different paint job... love look bindings and hate salomon bindings.

 
they have a wood core wrapped in foam. Yes, a real wood core in salomons. They are pretty sweet looking in person, i'll agree. My only concern is that they claim that they have thicker edges for rails. While the 1080s did have some pretty skinny edges, the foils' aren't a great deal thicker. The PR's have edges comparable to K2s, but their rail skis dont. I find this odd. Maybe even though they are still skinny, they are made stronger. I dunno, we'll hafta wait for some reviews.

I really dont like the look of the foils there way ugly. I wish more companies would be more into using real art for their grafic. Its kinda lame they just make tredy grafics for kids who want to be trendy

The FOILS are a brand new ski. The Thruster is basically the same exact ski as the old 1080 but softer flexing and cheaper. The Foils are softer in the tip and tail and stiffer under foot. They ski really well, but I only skied on them a couple days so no clue how well they will last.

im glad salomon is keeping it simple. So many other companies are making their graphics so busy. We should stick to simple graphics, having busy artsy ones can be cool sometime, armada did a good job, but for the most part it seems like we're just trying to look like snowboards

it seems like every company says that they have more durable edges every year but none seem to hold up. from my experience with salomon, they ski really well at first and then they lose their responsivness.

has anyone whos hating on them even rode them? I personally got to demo them, and i must say, i loved every minute of it, i wrote a review somewhere here a while back in march, use the search button if interested.

i dunno if there good but the 1080's are pretty sweet for the first month i won't lie i liked them alot and then they got all loose became noodles and stuff lost pop stopped loving them. i hope they will last longer

i skied the foils and the thrusters and liked the foils more than than any ski ive riden except they are like 500 dollars so i cant buy them

 
the foils are so much better than the 1080's, they made them bigger and changed up the core a lil bit, the thruster is the new 1080
