my parents force me to take piano lessons and it really sucks i hate it but they wont let me quit, who else takes them?
 
Well they did that for me in like 4th grade, So i told them I'd learn classical guitar instead and they were alright with it and got me some big ol spanish guitar. Best descision ever, with my basis in classical guitar its made it so much easier to shred anything these days. And i know some classical guitar too.
 
i think if your good at the piano then thats pretty sick. but that blows that you have to play old classical stuff. how old are you? talk to your parents more. maybe they'll consider a diff style of music that you could enjoy. do they expect you to be some prodigy or something?
 
I wish I was forced when I was younger. Now I'm contimplating acutally paying for my own lessons. Bitches love musicians. If you can play classical then it's for damn sure you can play a midi controller and lay down some sick beats.

Give it up and you'll cry later. Guarantee.
 
im 15 and yeah i guess playing not classical would be ok but my parents want be to get my grades and im in grade 7 so i guess im alright but its just so boring im waisting time when i could be out SKIING!
 
wait ur 15 and in seventh grade, were u left behind or something cause my 15 yr old brother is a sophmore in high school. 7th graders are supposed to be 13 arent they.
 
o, i dont know shit about piano stuff like that.

and to the 2 snowboarders, I think ur icons give it away but theres no reason to hide it, we'll still love you, like you'll be the second child and skiing is the first born
 
I played piano from 3rd grade up through 10th. I hated most of it... all I ever wanted to play was fast-ass shit because it's entertaining.

Now as a senior in college here is what I will tell you.

1.) Nearly everybody I know who played an instrument for some period of time is significantly sharper / quicker on their intellectual feet than the average non-musician. Almost 75% of the people are my college have played an instrument, these kids are Ivy League.

2.) Classical music is not the worst thing in the world... the majority of what I played was classical or rag-time and that shit STILL drives the girls nuts. Every girl I've ever dated (4-5 of them) that found out I played piano would BEG... and I mean BEG me to play for them. Once you're done your 2nd song they are sitting on the piano bench next to you with the biggest pair of "take me upstairs and fuck me" eyes I have ever seen. I never believed that shit when older people would tell me "Brian the girls will love you and ask you to play for them!" I was like 12 years old and thought Piano would have the opposite effect on girls... WRONG. I never believed them, but damnit they were right.

3.) You should be able to ask your teacher to throw some Billy Joel or shit like that in there. I've found that Billy Joel and Elton John are the two most popular piano players that actually have songs that everybody likes. If you can sit at a piano after 8 beers and throw down "We didn't start the Fire" or some shit like that, you are the man at the party... trust me. If you can't get your teacher to show you that stuff just tell your rents you want to keep playing but only if you can change it up a bit... that is a totally legit request.

Oh, and learn 'Flight of The Bumble Bee'. If you can play that song properly you can impress the fuck out of anybody.

I wish my parents had forced me to keep playing piano. Having a basis in classical music makes it so easy to play any new rock stuff.
 
dude i know how u feel, i was playig since i was about 8 and i finally quit this summer because i moved away to uni,,
 
I took piano lessons for 8 years, I just quit a year ago but still play. It's helped me so much with guitar, like finger picking and reading music, ect. I say, stay in piano lessons because once you can play stuff on expert/advanced level, it's pretty sick and you pwn NOOBS. Like the guy said above, girls love guys who play piano or guys who play 2-3 instruments : ) . Like, I play this song called "Rhapsody in the Blue", it's 45-50 pages long(can't remember exactly), and that will impress just about anybody.

 
couldn't have said it better myself. My only regret with piano is that i quit in 9th grade after 7 years of lessons. I hated it at the time, but now i wish i was better. Granted, I can still play pretty well, but you will definitely not regret the time you've spent now.

and btw, I only played classical during my lessons too so i know where you're coming from. but don't don't don't quit...
