I got asked to shoot a basketball practice for my school newspaper yesterday and was a little bit discouraged with some of the shots i got.
I was using both my 18-55 and 55-250mm lens but as is the case with any indoor action, the low light was a challenge.
my 55-250 isn't an outrageously good lense but its what i can afford for now so im wondering if anybody has any tips on how to imporve the quality of these shots
i shot most of them with the aperture wide open ISO at 1600 and shutter between 160-250 for much needed speed

Taking pictures inside a gym sucks. Period.

Unless you are allowed to use a flash, which was never the case for me.

Anyways, I think you did great. There's not much else you can do without a flash
 
You may want to invest in a faster lens. If you shoot Canon then definitely get the 50mm (fixed) f/1.8. It's poorly constructed but really fast, sharp, and cheap ($120-$130).
 
yep shooting in a gym sucks balls, w/o a flash your basically hooped (get it?) , your best chance is to just try and use the lights in the guy to your advantage and get as much fill light in their features as possible, this generally requires shooting from a higher angle. also depending on the shot that you are going for your shutter speed shouldn't have to be too fast. Ill get back to you with some more tips in a bit but i have to get to work :)
 
YO man those shots arent bad at all. Again, shooting inside a gym is the worst. Thats is as good as its ever gonnna be. By the way that pic of the skier on the box with the sun in the background is dooppeee. Were you skiing or shooting on that one?
 
they look kinda dark for the aperture so open. they look great to me tho!
maybe a little photoshop?
 
see when i say wide open it was at like 5 or just below at times cuz i was forced to use my telephoto lens. it was a restricted practice so i couldnt move around much. but thanks for the compliments
 
Those shots aren't bad at all. Maybe just a bit more brightness would help

Photoshop is a good tool if you know how to use it correctly. If you dont, Nikon's Capture NX 2 is brilliant and easy to use. You dont need to shoot Nikon to use it. I just got it recently and some of the features are amazing.

Definately something worth looking into if you want to edit but are strapped for time.
