-You cannot post something you posted in a previous contest

-Winner cannot submit a photo

-No hating other people's photos, constructive criticism is fine

So after consulting with benk, we have decided to have a more challenging topic this week. The last topics have been pretty straightforward but this one will take more planning and thought and hopefully encourage people to take their photos during the span of the contest

The topic is alternative lighting:

A photo is nothing without light, and what would happen when you use an unconventional light source? This does not mean pointing your camera at a floodlight and taking a picture, but using any means of lighting, i.e. headlamp, car lights, gels to set the scene and make your photo possible. Whether it is lighting up a subject in the foreground or an area in the background, try to bring light to something without simply using an on camera flash.

Here are a few examples from benk, the first shows how interesting it can be when you light up more than just the subject:

and the second shows how the scene can be captured using the light from the tent and the moon:

So this is challenging but be creative and have fun

lava lamp. gonna play around with it a little more i know i can get a way better composition out of it.

i have no idea what to do for this, it seems like im gonna have to fuck around with remote strobes or something

what no-steeze and I intended was basically anything thats not an on-camera flash. So if you use a strobe like in the first picture. bounce it off something colorful or use gels. etc.

Just be creative with it and have fun.

yep you can set up strobes as long as they aren't on camera or from the same angle as an on camera flash. just try to light up something cool in the background or something, there's an awesome jordan manley shot where he lights up icicles in the background and uses that as the lighting for the skier

i have the most incredible idea. my camera is in albany and i am in maryland. hopefully i can get to it before the week is out.hype/claim

again i apologize for the second post just didnt see the rules. no_steeze please delete that first one

Taken on the chairlift during some night skiing. I love this picture because I think it looks like a painting. The blur of the photo and the park light created a really cool effect IMO.

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

Last period comes in handy to use the photo studio at school. I used color gels as alternative lighting to made some cool shadows and colors! Hope you like.

i export all my photos from lightroom in full size and then export again at 1440pixel width for internet uploads and sending through email

Mostly. He is good friends with my moms friend who sent him the link to my flickr account. He picked 3 photos out and said they were "above average" but this photo he said was spectacular. Honestly, I don't see it but it's cool with me. He sent me a signed book saying it.

No clue. I admit it's interesting but it's on the "artsy" side of things, which quite frankly, I hate. It reminds me of those kids in photo class that think every photo they take is so unique because it's in b&w and their parents and friends filling their heads with egocentric thoughts.

I'm very harsh on my own photography. A picture I loved 5 minutes ago I hate now. I guess it could be a good thing. Either that or I'm a crazy artist. Fuck! That's exactly what I hate.

i'm thinking about extending the deadline a few days just so people have a bit more time to set up entries

thoughts?
