Photo color constrast help

ok so i wanna be able to make like 99% of my picture black and white, and isolate like goggles or a helmet or some other object, and keep that object the orginal color, with everything else black and white, i only have like the crappy photoshop 3.0, i dont think it does this kind of detailed editing, is there any way to do this is HP image center or mic paint? thanks
 
The way I usually do this is: Take the image, make a layer of it overtop and then desaturate (ctrl+Shift+U) and then select whatever I want to leave in color with the pen tool and delete it.
