Phish vs. Grateful Dead

hmm, the reason i didn't like them in the first place was because i couldn't stand listening to most of the studio stuff. once my friend passed along a live one and a compilation of fall '97 heaters (phish destroys america), i couldn't stop listening.

i still have yet to listen to a full album of theirs.

cool! you are the exception to the rule. in that case. the great went. any fall97. island tour. summer 2000. some 94 couldnt hurt. 99 is imo an undervalued year. honestly, for me, 97-2000 is the golden age. their europe tours were always fire. do you know about the "phish spreadsheet?". basically every phish show with dl links. hope this helps. happy listening

bump for terr, brah.

phish slays.

(although i fucking LOVE the dead in all their different eras and configurations

I am going to say Phish > The Dead

I absolutely love both bands, just saying.

Although you really cant compare the two, I will attempt.

Trey can play Jerry, but Jerry can't play Trey. The things that Trey does on a guitar requires much more skill (not taking anything away from Jerry) than it does to play a Dead tune. For example, the Phish song Stash. Jerry couldn't play it. Another reason is the composition of the tunes. The majority of The Dead's tunes follow a simple progression and structure, whereas a good amount of Phish tunes follow no structure at all (ex. You Enjoy Myself). Another being that Phish has consistently had the same lineup (with the exception of the first 2 years before Page came along) throughout their 29 (entering their 30th) years as a band. The Dead has had 10+ different members throughout the years.
