PETITION: KEEP TOBACCO OUT OF SKIING

I dont know if this was brought up yet but redbull and Monster and all of those drinks are as bad or worse for you in the long run then cigarettes. A lot of people don't know it yet cause they are marketed as "energy supplements" and things to "kick into gear when you need them most". Little do we all know, we are all killing ourselves with these awesome energy givers.
yet they have taken over the market of sponsorship, and event management. Everybody jizzes over red bull events, red bull sponsored videos and redbull riders (replace the word redbull with monster in all that) and not one person says "those companies are setting a terrible example for what is healthy and should not be involved in our sport especially because children can permanantly ruin their lives by drinking 4 redbulls a day".
If your gonna say that tobacco shouldn't be a part of our sport then your gonna have to use the same arguement on all those energy drinks.
And the sport is deadly dangerous anyway, so anyone that is participating in it in the first place is subjecting themselves to a world that its as easy to die in a fraction of a second as it is to be permanantly parapalegic.

Epic thread. People who want to control other things/people clash against the free man. I vote for the free man. You do what you want and face the consequences.

FOR THE LAST TIME this thread isnt about saying you dont have the right to smoke cigs.

Its about targeting youth with their adds. And a massive settlement that tobacco companies have already done, and then the MSA was formed.

The master settlement agreement said it was not ethical to direct advertising, sponsorship, lobbying, and litigation

activities, particularly as those activities targeted youth;

U can smoke as many cigs as you want or throw 10 dips in if you feel like it, i aint treddin on that shit. tobacco companies love you, so do doctors.

fuck that lets keep skiing out of tobacco. With the high death rates skiers make horrible tobacco users.

we dont need a pole to show that an abundant amount of kids are on this site...... we have this thread.

Def needs to stay out of skiing, i don't care if people do it but when its advertised around me in all the freeskier podcasts its whack!

Okay I guess its time to throw in my two cents

First of all I don't smoke or chew because I think it's revolting, but I know a lot of people who do and that's their choice, which I'm cool with.

And as for the advertising to children, even if they don't see it in a skiing magazine, they will be exposed to pro-tobacco advertising elsewhere. So, honestly, I don't really think it matters where it's advertised and there's really no getting away from it.

The thing that really needs to be considered is whether or not children are properly educated on the effects of using tobacco(or doing drugs, drinking, having sex, etc.). Kids need to be taught more effectively and at a younger age the HONEST truth about these things (not all the biased shit that health teachers give you).

If kids are effectively educated about all of the consequences, then they should know enough not to fall for ads in a magazine. So even if they are in Freeskier, not every 13 year old skier kid will go out and buy a pack of cigs (which I'm not saying is what will happen, but you get the idea).

And please excuse my rambling

Not so sure if this is "an epic thread backfire" more so that a bunch of people getting defensive and voicing their heartfelt opinions in a thread that asked for no opinions. Not a backfire just people being dumb

As long as it doesn't affect anyone else, what's the problem? I've never seen anyone smoke tobacco in a gondola, but I've seen people toke in one. I think there's something to think about that one as well..

Yes, I smoke from time to time.

i dont really have a problem with people who smoke, but i still think its wrong to have tobacco advertise in skiing

How are energy drinks killing us? They don't have nearly as dangerous side-effects as tobacco does. With all the evidence you gave us, energy drinks could prolong life for all we know.

Tobacco has been proven to cause cancer.

it's funny cause when a sport goes to be welknown all the big sponsors goes to it!!!!

nobody is complaining when it's an alcohol sponsor who come to the sport....

i don't make the apologie of tobacco cause i quit smoking 4 years ago but just it's just marketing and sponsors come to every sport they know they will have adds and stuff so don't blaim it but this is how the world is going on right now

i know people are complaining about it or hate it but it's like that

skiing is getting more exposure and people who get the money come to it cause on big event they just got spots

watch soccer formula one and big sport like that

skiing is getting better known i'm not saying it's great to have tobacco in it but when people like that who come in it means that our sport is going to be big and super known

lolzo

Just let it go. Mention tobacco on this site and the world goes into a shitstorm that lasts a good 5 pages.

PS I smoke, chew, and use snus. Its advertised heavily in magazines for more mature aduiences (like Guns and ammo) But as this thread proves people cannot live with other people making their own choices.

My home mountain banned smoking on their property this year, if you're this much of a pussy come ski here! One last point, my day just isn't complete without a smoke on the lift, warm smoke in the lungs, cool mountain air, just right.

just gotta find one you can stand the taste of. I like it because you keep the buzz as long as you keep in the dip. I'll sit at work or ski with one in at most for an hour though..... But just have to find a can you can stand tasting. Skoal of some kind of fruity flavor is a great starter

tobacco is bad for you. skiing is good for you. no point in calling people pussies over it. its the simple truth is that if you chew, or smoke pot, you arent helping your body.

chew is alot more potent i think.

you know when you smoke a cig u get a hea rush alittle but? well chew is stronger and lasts alot longer.

i have chewed bfore but not anymore. i smoke tho.

back to the topic:

why the fuck do you care if there is some tabacco ad in a magazine? people know the risks of tabacco. and its their choice to make.

doing this isnt gonna get you to heaven.

PS: FUCK YOU

the responses in this thread appear to be between a second and third grade reading level. as such, I vote we say fuck tobacco, monster, redbull, pussy, beer, weed, coke, crack, pcp, and whatever else you guys are scared of, and petition to see if we can get Hooked on Phonics or Webster's to throw us some cake.

This is fucking newschoolers. If you say anything you will have opposition. second or third post was a post giving reasons as to why they disagreed with you and all you had to say was insult them and say they ruined your thread. You seem to be the more defensive one.

You may not have asked for an opinion but you're getting one.

Petition for smuggs to stop being such a goddamn pussy. I'd write a big thing about how it doesn't affect you but I'm sure you've read enough of those this thread to realize how dumb you look.

I agree 100% with smuggs.
The bottom line here is that we're seeing a tobacco advertisement in Freeskier, a magazine whose demographic hinges on the 12-20 crowd, roughly. According to their Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), they will not advertise to "youth."
Who are "youth?"
The UN General Assembly defines "youth" as those between 15-24 years of age. The World Bank defines "youth" as those between 15-25 years of age. The Commonwealth Youth Programme defines "youth" as those between 15-29 years of age. Finally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines "youth" as anyone under the age of 21.
Is this advertising?
Yes. The advertisement was purchased from Freeskier. Apparently, it takes a position such that tobacco is portrayed as something that "isn't that big of a deal."
Is tobacco that big of a deal?
Yes. A known carcinogen, tobacco has a negative effect on the user. Negative effects on the lungs, mouth, heart, skin, teeth, etc. are longterm and not temporary. Not content with merely harming the user, tobacco harms those around the user due to the effects of secondhand smoke.
Is this an issue legally?
Yes. It doesn't take a lawyer to figure out that General Tobacco (GT) is in the wrong here. They are violating their own Master Settlement agreement by targeting their advertising at youth. It doesn't matter how many people are going to be seeing the advertisement. What does matter, is that people will. Advertising is proven scientifically to desensitize people to harmful things such as tobacco. So yes, this advertisement will inevitably be effective.
Why should I care?
You should care because GT is harming the ski industry through this advertisement. Sure, the ski industry (namely, Freeskier) is gaining money off of this, but have NS and the ski industry as a whole really become that shallow? You would accept money from a company that will harm the health of our skiing community and a company that already has harmed the health of millions of Americans.
I had faith in NS. I had faith in the skiing community. But has it really become this shallow? Skiing is a sport that emphasizes an active, healthy lifestyle and community bonds and friendships. The advertisement may seem small and insignificant, but by proxy it acts to destroy all three of these things that make skiing great.
I urge Freeskier to settle this quickly and halt future tobacco advertising. It may be money, but it's not money that we want in our sport.
A. Gill
