May 21st, 2003 | Former A-F Records intern jailed for working for justice!

Written by Anne

Support a Political Prisoner of Conscience!!!

Mimi LaValley was the very first intern at A-F Records back when the label was a three-person outfit run from the shack at Justin’s parents’ house. Since those humble beginnings Mimi has continued to work for human rights and became active in the crusade to shut down the School of the Americas (SOA) at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Now, because of her commitment to justice, Mimi has been sent to prison.

The School of the Americas (renamed the “Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation” in 2001) is officially described as a combat training school for Latin American soldiers. In reality, it is a notorious terrorist training camp run by the U.S. Army. The SOA trains military personnel from Latin American countries in techniques that they then use to persecute, torture and terrorize the people of their respective countries. Scores of SOA graduates have been responsible for atrocities committed against civilians in several Latin American countries.

Fr. Roy Bourgeois founded the School of the Americas Watch (SOAW) in 1990. Fr. Roy, a Maryknoll priest, served communities in several Latin American countries and learned that the military personnel who were terrorizing and killing the citizens of the countries he was in (or those who spoke out on their behalf) were more often than not SOA graduates. After the execution of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her teenage daughter in El Salvador in 1989 by SOA graduates, Fr. Roy came back to the U.S. to learn more about the SOA and to find a way to shut it down. He founded the School of the Americas Watch.

Every November, SOA-Watch holds a Vigil at the gates of Ft. Benning in memory of those who have died as a result of SOA training. Some participants have been arrested for trespassing for crossing the gate into Ft. Benning, and some have been sentenced to prison. Mimi participated in this act of civil disobedience this past November along with many others. Now she has been imprisoned at the women's Federal Corrections Institute at Danbury, Connecticut, where she'll be until the end of her sentence on July 25, 2003. Mimi joins the 70 other prisoners of conscience who are also in prison for wanting the SOA to be closed and the U.S. Army out of the business of training terrorists.

If you are at all inclined to write letters, we’re asking that you write to Mimi to help keep her spirits up. She cannot receive email while she’s incarcerated. We know that Mimi will appreciate the support, and that it will lift her spirits immeasurably to know that there are many, many people who support her struggle for justice.

Here’s the address that you can write to Mimi at:

Michelle LaValley

#91371-020

FCI Danbury

33 1/2 Pembroke Rd.

Danbury, CT 06811-3099

We hope you’ll take the time to send Mimi a note or a letter, and that you’ll learn more about what you can do to close the SOA!!!

if you use coersion to force people to change, you become no better than the institutions you are fighting against. therefore amnesty international sucks.

Furthermore, the atrocites in s. america go both ways. and in case you havent picked up a history book lately, jesuit priests are no angels. they were militant christians whose mission was to go throughout the americas and force the natives to accept christianity through any means nessessary. they have commited plenty of abuse. you are a typical activist, fighting something without knowing the full story.
