People like this should be wiped from the earth

You can tell by the article that the writer has NO IDEA what he's talking about.

People who were there can testify that he took pointed it from the top of central park into the first jump which is normally around 25 ft. Super small. And he pointed it for over 200 yards.

Jumps aren't unsafe if you don't land in the flats. Thats the skiers responsibility. Learn the correct speed, thats the name of the game.

I almost feel compelled to write a letter to the paper.

If I get enough anger built up, I will.

Personal responsibility means nothing any more.

If you don't know how to do it safely, then don't do it. While I dislike a lot of Snoqualmie's jump designs, there will always be ample opportunity to hurt yourself on any jump.

for sure

but this new lawsuit coming through the works is (presumptuously) a family pissed that their son died, saw that Salvini got a dickload of money (at least that was the ruling for now) in the same park within a week of eachother even though he was something like 60% responsible, so why not sue for a dickton too with a good chance of winning, at least for now? just another example of the sad state of blaming others when sometimes people fuck up on their own.

he went like a 100+ feet on a tiny ass jump bombing from the top of

central or something like that. Somebody was lacking a brain at the moment

And the biggest problem here is precedent, as once one person does it, everyone will.

Say goodbye to the terrain park as we know it.

They keep saying "it's easy to make the jumps safe." I don't see how anything on a ski mountain can be made "safe." You could be skiing down the hill, lose control and not be able to stop, then run into a lodge at the bottom and die. Is that because the mountain didn't make the run "safe?" No, it's because you are a dumbass, and you live in America, where dumbasses are allowed to get rich and run free. Shit like this doesn't happen in Europe and pretty much everywhere else for that matter. Americans are just plain fucking idiots who will NEVER take blame or ANY of their actions.

I burned myself--->the coffee was made too hot

I crashed off a road----->the gaurd rail wasn't big enough

I died trying something stupid----->the guys on TV made me want to try it

The dog bit me because I was taunting it---->the owner should have known better

I hurt myself skiing---->the mountain shouldn't have let me do it

I fucking hate Americans. Sueing for something that is YOUR fault is the most childish thing one can do. People need to stop trying to make money off their dumb actions. They are just ruining our world.

this is the first press release on the kenny salvini subject mentioning Snoq's expert witness Jasper Shealy saying the UC Davis physics prof is wrong and there's too many variables to put together mathematical formula that can be used to "design" jumps.

fuck that shit. like jordan said it was his own fault, why would you take a 25 footer so big. he shoulda realized that everyone who wasnt a complete retard was hittin it with the right speed.

"As news of the verdict spread, skiers around the country denounced it and called for stronger legal protections for ski areas. Connelly said he and Salvini received a slew of letters accusing them of damaging a new and increasingly popular aspect of the sport. "

That's rad... It's like we've been anomonously mentioned in the P-I

I'm in Mech. Engineering right now, and I can tell you it is possible to design a jump no-one can get hurt on:

- 25 foot downhill

- 5 degree incline for jump

- 100 foot landing.

- you would get 2 seconds of air.

If they win this appeal, Im going to crystal and skiing into a sign, and suing for millions; this would set the perfect legal precedent.

I

was one of the jurors on this case. This article doesn’t tell much of

the story. Only by sitting in the courtroom for a month and listening

to detailed testimony can you really know what happened here. The

leaders at Snoqualmie Pass had a great deal of evidence that this jump

was poorly designed and they did nothing to make it safer. They never

even passed along the information to the groomer. A ski instructor

overshot the jump and broke his back. On the accident report, he wrote

that if the jump was not fixed, someone would be killed. Still, the

people who ran the pass did nothing.

Skiing is an inherently

dangerous sport and Kenny Salvini takes responsibility for what

happened to him. This is in the court record. That is why the jury

assigned only 45% of the responsibilities to the ski area. The rest of

the responsibility was assigned to Salvini and the inherent risk in

skiing. The dollar amount was based on doctor’s estimates of the cost

of caring for him for the rest of his life. We listened to days of

testimony about what it takes to care for someone in his condition and

how much it costs. To those who can’t believe such large amounts,

without remember exact numbers I can tell you that the actual estimated

cost for Kenny’s care was more than 32 million dollars and the jury

award was 45% of that. Yes, it does cost a very very large amount of

money to care for a quadriplegic for the rest of his life. This case

was not about Kenny Salvini becoming a rich man. Even if he ever gets

this award, it will not begin to cover the basic cost of caring for

him. Of course he may never get the money as the ski industry will

appeal endlessly. Meanwhile his life goes on with no movement from the

neck down and no money to provide for his care.

Far from a

runaway jury, 14 intelligent, thoughtful individuals took more than a

month out of our lives to learn the FACTS of this case. Most of us went

into this experience feeling that Salvini must have been pretty dumb

and reckless to injure himself in this way and we came away convinced

that there is much the people running Snoqualmie Pass could have done

to diminish the danger of a poorly designed, poorly built and poorly

maintained 30 foot jump placed right in the middle of an enormous

slope. Despite many warnings, they did nothing and two young men paid a

very high price for that neglect.

Skiing and snowboarding are

inherently dangerous. My own teenage son snowboards and loves the jumps

in the terrain park. Unfortunately I know very well that this is a

risky sport. All we can do is ask the people who run the ski area to

apply some science and some common sense to the jumps they design to

help limit that risk. After that is up to boarders and skiers to make

good choices and live with the risk.

Report violation

Ok, so I worked as pro patrol at the summit this year, so youve probably sworn at me from a lift at some point not to mention ive heard all the risk management stuff on these guys, so I'll point out a bunch of facts that havent been brought up yet. first off, both skiers landed on the bottom of the transitions of the jumps, thereby not landing flat and the landings being long enough. also, neither of the parties were going to sue until the lawyer defending both of them approached and coaxed them into suing. basically, this is the world we live in and because of these people 3/4 or a patrollers job is investigation and documentation, so when you see a patroller investigating a jump, go hit the pipe instead, rather than spraying them and giving the bird, because patrollers are now the only reason we still have jumps. thank you.

" we came away convinced that there is much the people running Snoqualmie Pass could have done to diminish the danger of a poorly designed, poorly built and poorly maintained 30 foot jump placed right in the middle of an enormous slope. "

As I recall that jump was in the middle of a big flat area.... not really an "enormous slope."

not everybody that rides park is a little punk asshole.

I mean sure there's your billy russells and evan mays in this world, and they really are little punk assholes... but not everybody man... not everybody

I know we've beated this horse to death, but.........

Kenny landed on the tranny and not on the flats? Isn't that what's supposed to happen?

Next time a liftie doesn't bump the chair hard enough and I get wacked in the calfs, I'm suing too.

I thought Salvinis whole argument was that the landings WERE NOT long enough and this juror guy just said they agreed that they WERE...

WHAT THE FUCK MAN!!!????

What I think is these jurors could have been intelligent, well meaning people who have not a clue about skiing in a terrain park means. Sure, your son may hit the jumps, but if you have never tried to do it or spent the time to get competent, then you won't understand the mechanics or how to figure out how to hit a jump.

And the fact that they weren't going to sue until they were approached by the lawyer does nothing to make my impression of lawyers better.

I wouldn't claim being a patroller at the summit. I'm up there every weekend and haven't seen a single one at west, central or east that can ski...

weekend patrollers are volunteer douche bags, different from pros during the week. like to see you keep up with any of us.

This guy does know how to ski, without question. Quit judging people based on simply the fact that they are patrollers.

There is a hell of a lot of bitching about patrollers on this site, which is for the most part unjustified. If you get really screwed up in a wreak, you're in their hands. They do the avie bombing which allows you to ski in places that otherwise would be quite a bit more dangerous. They are just trying to do their job like anybody else, and very very few that I have ever dealt (one or two) with have been plain mean for no reason.
