Peak Oil

Today our Biology teacher spent the entire period talking about peak oil. A year ago thanksgiving the world reached the half way point in terms of the amount of oil estimated to be left on the earth. Pretty freaky if you ask me, more to come on it tommorow when we get deeper into the subject.

My biology teacher today asked about things that cannot be changed by the environment in which we live, and is determined by genetics. This guy put up his hand, and simply said "black people". And then our biology people started talking about skin color, and then talked about how [white skinned] people would get tannedd when they go to a sunny place... and then turned to an Indian guy and said to him "this doesn't include you, you're a different case".

The whole room laughed.

I'm not sure whether you deserve to be called dumb, stupid or blind.....If big oil companies such as Exxon and corporations like OPEC have finally came out and said that we have reached the half way point thats reason to fret. This means that oil production can only go down now as consumer demand continues to increase.

Exxon released this graph, it may help clarify things.

I'm also hoping to hear from some people who believe it's a conspiracy (as with any world problem) it makes things interesting and I havent heard too much of the other side.

I don't necessarily believe it's a conspiracy, but I think a lot of people and websites are over exaggerating the speed at which this would happen and the consequences of it.

Maybe I'm naive, but I really hope that there are enough competent people left in the world who would not let "civilization come to an end." Yes, we may have to really cut back on oil consumption and pay more for lots of products, but we don't need to start stocking the garage with bottled water, crackers, and flashlights.

I agree. I think it is wayy over exaggerated. People who are gullible are freaking out. Yet no one is cutting back on stuff (well, some people are... but most aren't really).

that would be dope, i would roll fat blunts of dank nug all day and eat berries and shit. who cares if civilization falls.

im just kidding. but seriously it would be mad fun to roll blunts and eat nature all day.

this is both bad, and good.

bad because well, oil supplies are low i suppose in the big shceme of things.

good because we still have enough oil and time to come up with some efficient/cost effective alternative.

Okay I just finished reading one of the websites. Sorry, this may be a legit concern, but this guy is fucking ridiculous. There is so much bullshit propaganda and fear tactics. I laughe d out loud at this paragraph.

By 2010, predicts Leggett, democracy will be on the run. . . . economic hardship will bring out the worst in people. Fascists will rise, feeding on the anger of the newly poor and whipping up support. These new rulers will find the tools of repression -- emergency laws, prison camps, a relaxed attitude toward torture -- already in place, courtesy of the war on terror. And if that scenario isn't nightmarish enough, Leggett predicts that "Big Oversight Number One" -- climate change -- will be simultaneously making its presence felt "with a vengeance." On the heels of their rapid financial ruin, people "will now watch aghast as their food and water supplies dwindle in the face of a climate seemingly going awry." Prolonged droughts will spread, decimating harvests

OH MY GOD. It's GLOBAL WARMING, RUN!!!! Haha he almost makes it sound like Mr. Peak Oil and Dr. Global Warming are sitting hidden in their secret lair, waiting for the time to strike. And when Mr. Peak Oil emerges to finally unleash his master plan of global domination, his sidekick Dr. Global Warming will be right next to him, faithfully helping bring civilization to an end. Give me a fucking break.

http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ If you're sick of neo-conservative bullshit propaganda, there's a little bit of the other spectrum to keep a balanced diet. Enjoy!

For those simpler folks here are some of the things made from oil that will become more expensive with time:

1. All plastics

2. Toiletries such as soap, makeup and shampoo.

3. Most types of shirts

4. Gasoline (obviously)

5. Fertilizers

6. etc etc

Peak oil doesn't really exist in the way that people actually think. Recovery rates from reservoirs is limited by costs and technology. As oil becomes harder to find, prices rise and this justifies the development of new recovery technologies and drilling in areas that were too expensive in the past. Alternative sources also become comparatively cheaper which should help stabilize pricing on the long term.

Just as a note, I am an oil and gas analyst on the Canadian stock market if you guys have any specific questions.

Oh, and the world has not come close to extracting half of the world's petroleum. Not close by even a long shot. Most of those numbers are based on current recoverable reserves versus past extracted petroleum. Current recoverable reserves increase all the time. One of the drivers of price change is the change in recoverable reserves versus expected future demand.

Thank you Mr Sushi... I'm a Fuel Development Analyst in New Zealand and I work with gas and oil contract in an Asia/Pacific forum based on global context.

As you said, "Peak Oil" is more of a scare mongering tactic. There's a whole buttload of oil out there and it will become available as demand increases and it becomes economical to get into those places and get it - such as the Great South Basin off the southern coast of New Zealand or everything that's locked away under the Rockies or indeed, Russia and Siberia.

The price rises of late have been due more to the fact that OPEC has agreed on a set rate of supply. It makes sense to them in a business perspective, they can drive demand higher and therefore ask a higher price. I can't really understand why it's taken them so long to do it.

And I wouldn't complain in the US if I were you, you guys have some of the cheapest pump prices in the world. Take a look at the UK or down under, we pay almost twice what you do...
