We are currently being bombarded with fluffy stuff, and we are like 6 days from closing.

yay.

yea dude, so crazy, it is april 7th and while there isn't a lot of snow yet, it is dumping and w will prob have a pow day tomorrow. its unreal.

wow, I didn't realize these places closed so soon. in Scotland where i live ski resorts are open for skiing so long as there is enough snow to ski on at all, like even if just one run is open and you have to pick your way round the stones and exposed stuff that aint snow.

This seems to be the thing everywhere. Tons of snow, and chairlifts that aren't spinning.

I don't even think it ever melted out and turned into corn at Big Mtn, there was so much pow.

Upper mountain is goood today. The storm that is supposed to move in Wednesday-Thursday is supposed to be stronger than this one

ya my hill is gunna close soon but the sick thing is there making a huge park with all the snow so we can just hike n jam

big white closed yesterday and it was dumping all day. we didn't have a day of true spring skiing all year and never any slush. fuck.

ya, still haven't had one slushy, warm spring day yet. it's still freezing and dumping every other day. can't believe they close mountains when there's so much snow left...

Chumps, here in Quebec most hills stay open so long as there is snow to ski on. They will even transplant snow from one run to another with a bulldozer just to keep the season going!

Well, technically no. For insurance reasons. There is going to be alot of film and photo shoots after the season and if people came up and hiked those features after we've finished grooming them and we came in the next day and it was rutted and such it's not cool. All the jibs go to the boneyard when we are done with them.

Damn thats so dumb you guys close on sunday in tahoe they stay open till there isnt enough snow to ski on. Im guessing we will be open till may for sure.

I don't think that brighton will get an actual spring day..it will be great snow and then BAM..no more skiing, sorry guys

yeah our mountain closed sunday...it was a pow weekend and one of the better snow years up there...bastards

I need some slushy days

I totally looked like a fool on sunday with it snowing and all..but hey, oh well

it is still way fun

I'm sad to say no...I was at brighton

but it might as well been hesher/gaper day for me, I had 2 different out fits in flow

You'll just get asked to leave if someone sees you bringing your own jibs to the mountain. Summer ops open may 28th so there will be people on the mountain pretty much from winter close to summer open. Since payday runs year round the only time to do the maintanence on it and/or the projects they have planned for it is the short turnaround from winter to spring and like last fall when they put a new haul rope on between summer close and winter open.

I'm hoping the higher elevations, uintahs keep snow well. Skinning until july would be great.

jesus my mountain in PA will be open longer than that!! i mean not really open, but on weekends the park is for hiking...

i never understood why these places out west closed so early!!

Yeah my hills still got 130 in. and closing day is this sunday.

Some one said they're closing early "due to lack of skier interest"

Well there's two different types of resorts. The one's that live off the local skier traffic and the one's that are tourist draws. When the sun comes out and it gets warm, people really do forget about the mountains. In the last two weeks I've had 4 different occasions where the person I was having a conversation with said "you're still skiing?" or "they're still open?" and even on resorts that are just there drawing off locals it still has the same effect. People would rather golf or bike or work in their garden. There is a small number of people that would actually ski (small number looking at the big picture. If a resort gets 4000 skier visits a day and only 300-400 in the spring it isn't going to be profitable very long). Look at how my former resort (when I paid for my seasons pass and went up whenever I could get out of work), Mt Hood Meadows does it in the spring. I'm sure they've started the discussion up in their blog already (which is very interesting to read, it's on my recommended reading list...). They give people an ultimatum. If we get a certain number of skier visits this weekend, we will be open next weekend. If not, then we shut down for the season. And they have alot of snow this year, but the interest in being on the snow really takes a dive after... I want to say late april but I'm pulling that out of the hat... for them.

As well, you need to look at what a resort has financially budgeted for the season. Lets take the grooming department. Sometimes you go over your budget for the season at the end of march. If the resort was to stay open, you would need to make enough to pay for the gas, operators, maintenance and such. Same with every department. If you start eating into the bottom line then you can't do the improvements a resort may or may not want to do over the summer for the next season.

I hope my rambling may have answered anything?

lets do this... I will be online for at least a half hour due to slowly downloading episodes of Top Gear... So if anyone wants to head over to the parkcity cult forum i'll be answering any questions you ever wanted to ask a cat herder.

but there's like only one more day of good cat time before we get cut down so they'll just be grooming parks and won't be able to do more projects. speaking of which lower jonesys will be closed tomorrow...

some people told me that last year all the parks closed a couple days before the rest of the resort, is that gonna happen this season too?
